Page | 6
B. Use and operation
1. Loose the connections of the gun at the vehicle.
2. Take the IFEX Impulse Gun, and put the strap around the shoulder.
3. Adjust the shoulder strap.
4. Hold the gun upwards at an appr. 30o vertical angle.
5. Check whether the water valve is closed.
6. Unwind the hose from the hose reel. (unlock safety catch)
7. Slowly open the air pressure cylinder valves at both air cylinders.
There will be 6 bar pressure on the water container and the water hose, and
25 bar pressure on the gun.
Note: The pressure gauge at the pressure regulator only shows the approximate
filling pressure of the air cylinder.
8. Further hold the gun upwards at an 30° vertical angle. Open the water valve.
The gun is filled, when small amounts of water spray through the splitted rubber
diaphragm of the gun. Close the water valve. Adjust the safety catch on the gun.

10. Please note:
The Impulse-technology achieves a very high velocity in that water is shot from the gun
at a high speed. This leads to a short but powerful recoil of the gun. In order to minimize
this recoil it is advisory to move the gun forwards while shooting and to bend your
body forwards with your legs in a so-called “walking position”. Always aim slightly below
the aligned target. Pull the trigger evenly and let go immediately after the shot. The air
pressure will be refilled automatically within 3 seconds. Open the water valve and
repeat the extinguishing process as before. The most effective short range is between 1
and 10 meters. The total shot range is 16 meters.
11. When well trained in using the gun and if rapid shooting is required, simply let the
water valve open and shoot when the gun is filled. Use the refilling time to
consider where to place the next shot. For the extinguishing of smaller fires the
gun can be filled with smaller amounts of water simply by opening the water
valve for shorter periods or through a faster shooting sequence.
12. Regular training and exercise with the IFEX 3000 Impulse fire extinguishing equipment
will result in maximum fire extinguishing efficiency, reducing the time needed extinguish
fires and the amount of water used.
C. After use of the IFEX Impulse Gun and trolley
1. Close the water valve and empty the water chamber.
2. Close the air pressure cylinder valve.
3. Empty the gun by pulling the trigger repeatedly until the remaining air has left
the hoses and the gun.
4. Secure the gun by turning of the safety catch at the trigger.
5. Put the gun in the designated holder and fix it with the strap.
6. Use the rewind mechanism to roll the hose back onto the hose reel.
7. Empty the extinguishing agent container from air pressure by opening
the pressure relief valve.
8. Refill the water cylinder with fire extinguishing agent as per para 7.1 and the air
pressure cylinders as per para 7.2 of the filling instruction
Test and filling instructions
Please note carefully:
These test and filling instructions describe the standard rules for testing and maintenance by
the user of the mobile IFEX 3000 Impulse fire fighting equipment. Maintenance should be
carried out as per DIN 14406, part 4, latest edition.

WARNING!
1. Make sure the air pressure valve is closed.
2. Use the drain valve at the water container to release remaining pressure
3. Make sure there is no remaining pressure in the IFEX Gun or hose. This is done
by triggering the gun repeatedly until the remaining air in the hoses and the gun
is evacuated.
Caution!
Put on the gun according to the user manual as there may be a recoil due to the
remaining air in the gun.
1. Testing of the equipment
To ensure the perfect functioning of the equipment it is required to have it tested
by an expert at least once a year. The periods between testing of the equipment may
need to be reduced if this is required by local regulations.

Appendix B/ fitting and maintenance
1. Introduction
Part „B” provides information for the operation of the reel, maintenance and basic repairs, as
well as spare parts. Regular maintenance assures ease of use of the unit. Should you have
any further questions, please contact your local IFEX dealer or IFEX Technologies GmbH in
Sittensen, Germany. This manual refers to the manual rewind hose reel as a part of the IFEX
3072 fire extinguishing unit. The fire extinguishing unit IFEX 3072 consists of the following
main components: sliding skid frame with a basic frame with sliding skid plus air cylinders
mounted with:
- Hose reel with 55m hose.
- extinguishing agent container 72 litre content.
- 2 air cylinders; 6 l/200 bar
- Air pressure hose unit consisting of 2 pressure regulators and hoses.
- Co-axial hose unit 55 m.
- IFEX 3001 Impulse Gun.
Refer to components of the IFEX 3072 Fire Extinguishing Unit manual page 16.
Mounting the IFEX 3072 unit
The skid with the mounted components can be raised onto the front of the vehicle where it
can be mounted.
Hose reel
The hose reel is powder coated /colour red RAL 3000 according to BS 381C538. The hose
reel with the other components on the sliding skid is supplied by IFEX Technologies GmbH
ready fitted.
The hose reel is the first component mounted on the skid in the direction of the extraction.
The rewind device is usually on the left side, the brake is on the right front side (custom
made skids with right side rewind devices can be supplied on order).
The grease nipple for the bearing is on the right on left front side of the reel.
Please note
The fire extinguishing unit with sliding skid can be removed from the

2. Routine maintenance
Every 6 months: (regular operating conditions). Lubricate the drum bearings and the spindle
of the rewind mechanism with general purpose grease through the grease nipples. Release
the brake and check the reel for easy rotation.
3. Operation of the drum brakes
a) Lower (rewind) position:
The drum is unbraked.
This position should be selected when the hose is being rewound.
b) Middle (braked) position:
The brake is partially applied. This position will allow a control of the drum during
unwind of the hose. This position will prevent the drum from rocking excessively when
the pressure is turned on and off.
c) Upper (locked) position:
The brake is fully applied. This position should be selected during transit or when the
hose is in use if a positive lock on the drum is required.
4. Brake adjustment
Move the brake lever to the lower rewind bottom position.
Apply pressure to the end of the brake rod. Sufficient pressure must be applied to
compress the spring and move the nut on the end of the rod clear of the brake shoe, so
that the nut can be rotated. Rotate the nut (clockwise when viewed from the back of the
reel to increase braking and anti-clockwise to decrease braking). The adjustments should
be made a little at a time. After each adjustment, move the brake lever to the braked
(middle) position and test the effectiveness of the brake. Repeat the operation until the
desired effect is achieved.
5. Rewind problems
If it should be difficult to rewind the hose to the reel, check the following:
Check that the hand wind brake is released. The brake should be in the lower (rewind)
position. Check that the drum bearings are lubricated, apply grease to the nipples.
If the drum is still tight, it is probably because the frame is mounted with a „twist“ in it. Try
loosening the bolts which fasten the reel down and if necessary put a packing piece
under one corner of the frame when re-tightening.
If the reel has been damaged during operation or otherwise, please contact your local
IFEX dealer or IFEX Technologies GmbH Sittensen, Germany.
Type IFEX 3072 Fire Extinguishing Unit with hose reel Date: 30.11.12
6. Leaky rotating swing joint- 3/4” water
When the reel is properly installed and maintained the rotating swing joint will have a
long life. Premature wear can occur if the joint is subjected to external strain from the
inlet connection. The connecting pipe must be flexible and should be fitted without
exerting any force on the rotating joint.
If the rotating joint should leak, replace the seals.
A self contained rotating swing joint is fitted externally. It can be serviced in-situ and can
be replaced without dismantling the hose reel.
6.1. Replacement of the rotating swing joint- 3/4” seal
Refer to IF-HR-300001-4-1.

Equipment needed: - external circlip pliers
- plug-Ø 2 mm, setting 7 - 20 mm
Seal: - two nitril seals Nr. 0216.00T
Procedure: Empty co-axial hose. Disconnect the water hose from the rotating swing joint.
Remove the circlip and the washer from the end of the hose fitting and pull off the sleeve.
Remove the seals from the socket (pick them out with a sharp tool, but take care not to
scratch the bottom of the groove where the seals fits).
Wipe all the parts clean, fit new seals into the grooves and the socket to the hose fitting.
Fit the washer and re-mount the circlip. Fit the water hose to the rotating swing joint.
If leakage still occurs after replacing the seals, it is possible that the rotating joint is worn
and may need to be replaced. In this case please contact your local IFEX dealer or IFEX
Technologies GmbH Sittensen, Germany.
