Maintenance Overview
The NAS-2108RW requires no routine service.
Cleaning
Caution: DO NOT immerse NAS-2108RW in liquid or use caustic or abrasive cleaners.
To clean NAS-2108RW, dampen a soft cloth with any commercial nonabrasive cleaner available in the market and wipe clean. Before cleaning, make sure that the system is turned off.

Introduction
This chapter provides information for troubleshooting NAS-2108RW and helping you to isolate a failure to the power adapter, the case fa n, the system firmware or the NASWare flash module, the LCD module, the wireless LAN module, th e hard disks and the main board. A troubleshooting guide is also provided; it lists possible problems, along with probable causes, and recommended actions on how to correct each problem.
Note: For system manufactured after November 2003, the system firmware is stored at NASWare flash module (DOM) instead of on-board flash. Please be noticed about this change wh en servicing.
Who Should Perform Repairs
Only qualified service personnel should remove and replace any components of NAS-2108RW. Repairs to the NAS-2108RW are limited to the repair level identified in the following paragraph.

Using this Document
Failures of the top cover, the front panel assembly are determined by v isually inspecting these components for cracks or deformations and for mechanical failures. Use the troubleshooting guide provided in this chapter to isolate failure to the main board, the LCD module, the wireless LAN module, the system firmware or the NASWare flash module, the power adapter, the case fan, o r the hard disks. Once a failure has been isolated, refer to Chapter 4, Disassembly Guide for instructions for removing and replacing a component of the NAS-2108RW.

IEI Customer Services Department provides technical assistance information and replacement parts. To obtain replacement parts, contact the IEI Customer Services Department or your sales representative. Please refer to parts by the part names and part numbers listed in Chapter 5, Spare Parts.
Troubleshooting Guide
If you encounter a problem that cannot be resolved through a visual inspection, check the following lists for probable causes and recommended actions to take to correct the problem. For a symptom that is not listed here, contact the IEI Customer Services Department or your sales representative.
Power Adapter
Symptom Corrective Action
The system does not power up when applying power.
Make sure the power cable and adapter is attached correctly, and there is power to the AC outlet. Replace the power adapter. If the failure persists, replace the main board.

Case Fan
Symptom Corrective Action
The system is on but the case fan has stopped working.
The system starts and hangs up.
LCD Module
Symptom Corrective Action
The system works well but no message is displayed on the LCD module.
The system works well but no LED on the LCD module lights up.
Replace the failed case fan.
Replace the front panel assembly, including the LCD module.
Hard Disk
Note: If the failed drive is not configured to a RAID 1 disk volume, there is no chance to retrieve the data stored in it.

The hard drive makes strange sounds when working.
Replace the hard disk that makes strange sound.
LCD module shows below error message: "disk drive n failed or unplugged"

System Firmware/ NASWare Flash Module
Caution: Reinstall the system firmware or replacin g the NASWare flash module will cause the existing configur ation data lost and return to the factory defaults.
Symptom Corrective Action
The system fails to boot successfully and the LCD module displays only the date and time.
Connect the console cables (refer to Appendix B) to investigate the system booting process. If the system does not report any hardware failure and hangs up after booting (as below figure), reinstall the firmware or replace the NASWare flash module.

Wireless LAN Module
Symptom Corrective Action
Cannot connect to the NAS-2108RW through the wireless LAN.
Main Board
Caution: Replacing the main board will cause the existing configuration data lost and return to the factory defaults.
Symptom Corrective Action
Open the top cover and remove the disk drives, check the wireless cable connection. Replace the wireless LAN module. If the failure persists, replace the main board.
After turning on the power, no “beep” is heard after booting.
The system fails to boot successfully.
The LCD panel displays only the date and time.
After reinstalling system firmware or replacing the NASWare flash module, the system still not works well.
Cannot connect to the network and the network LED is off.
Replace the main board.
Connect the console cables (refer to Appendix B) to investigate the system booting process. If the system reports any hardware failure, replace the main board.
Replace the main board.
Check the network connection first. If there is no problem on network connection, replace the main board.

Overview
The NAS-2108RW can be disassembled into the following assemblies:

Tools Required
The tools you will need to disassemble or reassemble the NAS-2108RW is listed as below:
One number 102 Phillips-head screwdriver One number 107 Phillips-head screwdriver One 5-mm spanner One diagonal pliers (for cutting the cable tie)
Caution: Observe ESD (electrostatic discharge) pr ecautions when disassembling and reassemblin g the NAS-2108RW and when handlin g any of the components of the NAS-2108RW.
System Disassembly and Reassembly
Use the following procedure to disassemble the NAS-2108RW, reassemble it in reverse order. It is recommended that you follow this disassembly procedure in the order presented.

Note: Before you begin to disassemble the NAS-2108RW, make sure that the system has been shutdown and the power cord is removed.
1. Remove the top cover: Unfasten the six screws and push the top cover towards the back to remove it.

2. Take out the hard disks:
a. Remove the six screws on the drive trays, then unplug flat cable and
power cable of hard disks as indicated below.
b. Unfasten all screws circled in the picture below and remove ha rd disk.

3. Detach the wireless LAN module:
a. Unfasten antennas of wireless card by turning in the direction shown by
the arrows and then unfasten the two scre ws so as to remove holders.
b. Remove flexible fasteners on the t wo sides in direction s shown by the
arrows then take out wireless card according to direction shown by the blue arrow. Finally, using a small screwdriver, remove connector of cable. Please be extra careful while pulling off the connector.

4. Remove case fan: Unfasten all eight screws circled in the graph below then unplug fan’s po wer connectors shown in the second picture.
5. Detach the NASWare flash module: The NASWare flash module is installed on the 44-pin IDE port (CN2) , just unplug it directly.
Note: Only system manufactured after November 2003 comprises the NASWare flash module. For earlier system, the system firmware is stored in on-board flash.

6. Remove front panel assembly (including LCD module):
a. Take off the protective cover after unfastening the four screws shown
below.
b. Loosen the four screws to the side and now you c an remove front panel
assembly.

7. Detach main board: a. Take off the two bronze posts.
b. Remove all peripherals and cable connectors from main board.
c. Loosen the six bronze posts circled b elow and remove main board.

8. Detach RAM module: Pull holders on two sides of RAM module in the direction shown by the arrows then remove RAM by pulling it out of its socket.

Chapter 6 PACKING FOR SHIPMENT
General Instructions Packing in the Original Carton Packing in a Different Carton
General Instructions
To ship a NAS-2108RW or one of its components for any reason, please follow the instructions in this section. Pack the NAS-2108RW or component carefully. Failure to follow the instructions in this section may result in loss or damage not covered by any applicable IEI warranty. If available, use the original carton and packing materials and follow the instructions in “Packing in the Original Carton.” If the original shipping carton and material are not available, use other suitable shipping materials and container and follow the instructions in Packing in a Different Carton.”
Prior to shipping the NAS-2108RW or component, contact IEI Customer Services Department or your sales representative for a Returned Material Authorization (RMA) number. Mark the shipping carton and any shipping forms with the RMA number.
Caution: Observe ESD (electrostatic discharge) precautions when packing any NAS-2108RW components.
Packing in the Original Carton
If the original carton and packing materials are available, repack the NAS-2108RW into the original carton. Add packing material in the carton as needed so the NAS-2108RW will not be able to move during shipment.
Packing in a Different Carton
If the original carton and packing material are not available when shipping an NAS-2108RW or one of its components:
1. Place the NAS-2108RW or component in a plastic bag.
2. Locate a corrugated cardboard shipping carton wi th at l east 200 po un ds per square inch (psi) bursting strength.
3. Fill the bottom of the carton with at least 2 inches of packing material.
4. Place the bagged NAS-2108RW or component on the layer of packing material and fill the box completely with packing material such that there is at least 2 inches of packing material around all sides of the item.

5. Seal the carton with packing tape.
6. Label carton with shipping address, return address, and RMA number.

Chapter 7 REINSTALLING FIRMWARE
Overview Firmware Reinstallation Procedure
Overview
This chapter illustrates the steps to reinstall firmware or replace firmware module on a NAS-2108RW system.
Caution: After reinstalling firmware or replacing a new NASWare flash module, all the existing configuration data will be lost.
After reinstalling the system firmware or changing a new NASWare flash module, please remember to continue to configure the system to the factory default settings, such as initialize disk configuration and create public share. To initialize system configuration, please refer to chapter 9, “Factory Defa ult Setup.”
Replacing Flash Module
Since November 2003, NAS-2108RW uses the NASWare flash module (Disk-on-module) to store its firmware. This NASWare flash module is connected to the main board via a 44-pin IDE socket. There is no need to re-install the firmware, just replaces the NASWare flash module whe n failed.
Please refer to the disassembly guide for replacing the flash module. To obtain the flash module for replacement, please contact IEI Customer Support Department or your sales representatives.
Reinstalling Firmware
To reinstall system firmware to NAS-2108RW that manufactured before November 2003, please follow the instructions described in “Firmware Reinstallation Procedure” section.

Firmware Reinstallation Procedure
Note: This section only applies to the system with on-board flash. For the system using Disk-On-Module (DOM), just replace the existing DOM with a new one containing the right version of firmware. To obt ain the replacement DOM, please contact IEI Customer Support Department or your sales representatives.
Tools Required for Reinstalling Firmware
The tools you will need to reinstall the firmware of NAS-2108RW is listed as below:

Manual, IDE Cable, Console (VGA and Keyboard) Ca bles
IDE CD-ROM Drive, including cables One Monitor One PS/2 Keyboard
Reinstalling Procedure
The following instructions show how to reinstall the firmware on a NAS-2108RW. Before performing the firmware reinst allation procedure, please have the service kit and a CD-ROM drive with the IDE cable ready on hand.
To reinstall the firmware on the NAS-2108RW, please connect the console cables to the NAS-2108RW main board (refer to the A ppendix B).
1. Turn off the power and remove the top cover.
Note: Refer to the “Disassembly Guide” for removing the to p cover.
2. Connect the CD-ROM drive to the IDE port on the main board. Then connect the power of the CD-ROM drive to the main board.

3. Use the VGA cable to connect the main board (CN13) and the monitor. Use the keyboard cable to connect the main boar d (CN4) and the keyboard.
4. Turn on the power. After booting, press the DELETE key to e nter the BIOS settings menu and select BIOS FEATURES SETUP.

5. In Boot Sequence option, select CDROM,C,A (using Page Up or Page Down key).
6. Before save the BIOS settings, put the Firmware Recovery CD into the CD-ROM drive. Select SAVE & EXIT SETUP to reboot. After system restarts, the following menu will appear on the screen.
7. Use UP or DOWN key to select the right firmware model and version to install, and then press ENTER. A confirmation screen will appear. Press Y and ENTER to proceed.

8. The system will start to install the firmware, please wait for a while. After the installation completes, the system will compare the checksum automatically to verify. If succeeds, the system will have a continuous beep sound. If fails, the system will make beep sound at one second interval.
Note: Be sure to check the result displ ayed on the scr een.
9. Press the power button to turn off the system. Turn on the system again and change the BIOS settings back to the factory default by choosing LOAD
SETUP DEFAULTS. Take the Firmware Recovery CD out. Select SAVE & EXIT SETUP to reboot. Then turn off the power.
10. Remove the CD-ROM drive and all the cables. Put the top cover back. Turn on the power. Make sure the system boots and works properly.
Please remember to continue to configure the system to the factory d efault settings, such as initialize disk configuration and create public share. To initialize system configuration, please refer to chapter 9, “Factory Defa ult Setup.”

Chapter 8 HARD DISK INSTALLATION
Overview Hard Drive Installation Procedure
Overview
The NAS-2108RW can install up to two 3.5” IDE hard disk drives. To make the system ready for access, install at least one hard drive to the NAS-2108RW. Then refer to the chapter 9, “Factory Default Setup”, for steps to configure the installed hard drives into one disk volume.
For a list of verified hard drive models, please refer to Appendix A. “Hard Drive Compatibility List.” We strongly recommend customers to use only th e tested hard drive models. IEI cannot guarantee system stability for users who install drives not specified on this list.
Hard Drive Installation Procedure
To use the NAS-2108RW, at least one hard disk should be installed. Before installing the hard drives, please make sure the system is off and the power cord has been disconnected. Follow below steps to install the hard drives to the NAS-2108RW.
1. Attach stickers onto the hard disks:

2. Put the hard disk onto the drive plate and fasten eight screws as shown
below.
Note: Due to the none-standard nature of IDE hard disk drives, each hard drives model might have slightly different physical dimensions. For some models, it may not be possible to fasten the hard disk to the drive plate with all the four screws.
3. Connect the IDE flat cable and the powe r plug for each hard drive. Fasten
the six screws as shown in the picture below.

Chapter 9 FACTORY DEFAULT SETUP

Overview
When a system is equipped with the hard drives and about to be shipped out, be sure to perform below checks:
Create Disk Volume
Pre-configure all the hard drives on the system to a RAID-0 volume.
Create Network Share
Create a default public share folder as me ntioned i n the user’ s manual.
Clear Event Logs
Remove all the event records.
Before performing the factory defaul t setup, start the browser and open the system administration web page of the NAS-2108RW.
Create Disk Volume
Follow below steps to configure the default disk volume:
1. In system administration web page, go to “Disk Configuration”. Run
“Create Disk Volume”, and select “RAID 0 Striping Disk Volume.”

2. Select to add all the disk drives into this disk volume.
3. Click OK to create the RAID volume. Please wait for a while until the volume
is created.
Create Network Share
To create the default share “public”, open the browser and connect to the network attached storage server. Ente ring system administration web page and follow below steps:
1. Go to “Network Share Management, and select “Create” to add a s hare.

2. Enter public as the new share name and click OK to proceed.
3. Select the option to grant all guests full access, and then click Close.

Clear Event Logs
In system administration web page, go to “Stati stics & Logs”, and select “Event Logs.” Then click Clear button to clear the entire event logs.

CONSOLE CABLE CONNECTION
To access the system BIOS for diagnosis, you wil l need to connect the monitor and keyboard via the console cables. The console cables are included in the NAS-2108RW Service Kits, which can be ordered as a spare part.
Note: Refer to Chapter 6, Spare Parts for ordering the service kits.
Please follow below figure to connect the console cable to the NAS-2108RW main board.
