3.1 Anti-static Precautions

WARNING:
Failure to take ESD precautions during the maintenance of the IS-453S-8G
may result in permanent damage to the IS-453S-8G and severe injury to
the user.
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause serious damage to electronic components,
including the WAFER series motherboard and the power module. (Dry climates are
especially susceptible to ESD.) It is therefore critical that whenever the IS-453S-8G is
opened and any electrical component handled, the following anti-static precautions are
strictly adhered to.
Wear an anti-static wristband: Wearing a simple anti-static wristband can
help to prevent ESD from damaging the board.
Self-grounding: Before handling the board, touch any grounded conducting
material. During the time the board is handled, frequently touch any
conducting materials that are connected to the ground.
Use an anti-static pad: When configuring the IS-453S-8G, place it on an
anti-static pad. This reduces the possibility of ESD damaging the IS-453S-8G.

3.2 Installation Precautions

During installation, be aware of the precautions below:
Read the user manual: The user manual provides a complete description of
the IS-453S-8G, installation instructions and configuration options.
DANGER! Disconnect Power: Power to the IS-453S-8G must be
disconnected during the installation process. Failing to disconnect the power
may cause severe injury to the body and/or damage to the system.
Qualified Personnel: The IS-453S-8G must be installed and operated only
by trained and qualified personnel. Maintenance, upgrades, or repairs may
Page 17
Page 26
only be carried out by qualified personnel who are familiar with the associated
dangers.
Air Circulation: Make sure there is sufficient air circulation when installing the
IS-453S-8G. The IS-453S-8G’s cooling vents must not be obstructed by any
objects. Blocking the vents can cause overheating of the IS-453S-8G. Leave
at least 5 cm of clearance around the IS-453S-8G to prevent overheating.
Grounding: The IS-453S-8G should be properly grounded. The voltage feeds
must not be overloaded. Adjust the cabling and provide external overcharge
protection per the electrical values indicated on the label attached to the back
of the IS-453S-8G.

3.2.1 High Surface Temperature

WARNING:
IS-453S-8G Industrial NAS
Some surfaces of the equipment may become hot during operation.
The surface temperature may be up to several tens of degrees hotter
than the ambient temperature. Under these circumstances, the
equipment needs to be protected against accidental contact.
The equipment is intended for installation in a RESTRICTED ACCESS LOCATION.
Access can only be gained by SERVICE PERSONS or by USERS who have
been instructed about the reasons for the restrictions applied to the location
and about any precautions that shall be taken.
Access is through the use of a TOOL or lock and key, or other means of
security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

3.3 Installation Procedure

Page 18
To properly install the IS-453S-8G, the following steps must be followed. Detailed
descriptions of these instructions are listed in the sections that follow.
Step 1: Unpacking
Page 27
IS-453S-8G Industrial NAS
Step 2: Install the hard disk drive (HDD)
Step 3: Mount the IS-453S-8G
Step 4: Connect the Ethernet cable
Step 5: Connect peripheral devices
Step 6: Power the system upStep 0:

3.4 Hard Drive Installation

NOTE:
Before installing hard drives, ensure the solid disk drives (SSDs) that
you use are compatible with the NAS.
Four 2.5” SATA hard drives and/or solid disk drive (SSD) can be installed in the
IS-453S-8G. To install the hard drive into the system, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Remove all four screws from the front panel (Figure 3-1).
Figure 3-1: Front Panel Removal
Step 2: Remove the hard drive tray (

3.4.1 Hot-swapping Hard Drives

The NAS supports hot-swapping the hard drives when 1 member drive crashes in RAID 1,
1–2 member drives crash in RAID 5 or RAID 6. Follow the steps below to hot-swap the
hard drive when a member drive fails in a RAID configuration.
Step 1: Login the NAS and check the disk volume configuration in “Volume
Management”.
Step 2: The volume status should be “in degraded mode”.
Step 3: Prepare a new hard drive to replace the failed one. The capacity of the new hard
drive should be the same as or larger than the failed hard drive.
Step 4: Unplug the failed drive from the NAS. Wait for about 20 seconds or until the
server beeps twice.
IS-453S-8G Industrial NAS
Step 5: Remove the failed drive from the drive tray.
Step 6: Install the new hard drive on the drive tray. Insert it to the NAS.
Step 7: The server should beep 1.5 seconds twice.
Step 8: Check the volume status on the web administration page. The volume should be
rebuilding.
WARNING:
Users are strongly recommended to turn OFF the server before replacing the
hard drive to reduce the risk of electric shock.
Page 22
Page 31
IS-453S-8G Industrial NAS
CAUTION:
IEI disclaims any responsibility for product damage/malfunction or data
loss/recovery due to misuse or improper installation of hard disks in any
occasions for any reasons.
Note that if a hard drive (new or used) which has never been installed on the
NAS before it is installed, the hard drive will be formatted and partitioned
automatically and all the disk data will be cleared.

3.5 RAID Recovery

The NAS supports exclusive RAID recovery technology to recover a failed RAID disk
volume from unintentional disconnection or removal of the hard drives from the system.
Using the RAID recovery, users can recover an inactive RAID 1, RAID 5, or RAID 6
volume to degraded mode, or an inactive RAID 0 and JBOD configuration to normal.
Disk volume Supports RAID recovery Maximum number of disk
removal allowed
Single No -
JBOD Yes 1 or more
RAID 0 Yes 1 or more
RAID 1 Yes 1 or 2
RAID 5 Yes 2 or more
RAID 6 Yes 3 or more
RAID 10 No -
If the volume status is not active, users can install the same hard drives back to the same
slots of the NAS. Then click “RECOVER” on the “Disk Management”  “Volume
Management” page. Wait for about 60 seconds for the process to complete. When
finished, the data can be accessed.
Page 23
Page 32
IS-453S-8G Industrial NAS
NOTE:
After recovering a RAID 1, RAID 5, or RAID 6 disk volume from not active to
degraded mode by the RAID recovery, users can read or write the volume
normally. The volume status will be recovered to normal after synchronization.
If the disconnected drive member is damaged, the RAID recovery function will
not work.
