Failure to take ESD precautions during the maintenance of the
3.1 Anti-static Precautions
WARNING:
GRAND-BDE may result in permanent damage to the GRAND-BDE and
severe injury to the user.
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause serious damage to electronic components,
including the WAFER series motherboard and the power module. (Dry climates are
especially susceptible to ESD.) It is therefore critical that whenever the GRAND-BDE is
opened and any electrical component handled, the following anti-static precautions are
strictly adhered to.
Wear an anti-static wristband: Wearing a simple anti-static wristband can
help to prevent ESD from damaging the board.
Self-grounding: Before handling the board, touch any grounded conducting
material. During the time the board is handled, frequently touch any
conducting materials that are connected to the ground.
Use an anti-static pad: When configuring the GRAND-BDE, place it on an
anti-static pad. This reduces the possibility of ESD damaging the
GRAND-BDE.
3.2 Installation Precautions
During installation, be aware of the precautions below:
Read the user manual: The user manual provides a complete description of
the GRAND-BDE, installation instructions and configuration options.
DANGER! Disconnect Power: Power to the GRAND-BDE must be
disconnected during the installation process. Failing to disconnect the power
may cause severe injury to the body and/or damage to the system.
Qualified Personnel: The GRAND-BDE must be installed and operated only
by trained and qualified personnel. Maintenance, upgrades, or repairs may
GRAND-BDE Series
Page 15
only be carried out by qualified personnel who are familiar with the associated
dangers.
Air Circulation: Make sure there is sufficient air circulation when installing
the GRAND-BDE. The GRAND-BDE’s cooling vents must not be obstructed
by any objects. Blocking the vents can cause overheating of the GRAND-BDE.
Leave at least 5 cm of clearance around the GRAND-BDE to prevent
overheating.
Grounding: The GRAND-BDE should be properly grounded. The voltage
feeds must not be overloaded. Adjust the cabling and provide external
overcharge protection per the electrical values indicated on the label attached
to the back of the GRAND-BDE.
3.2.1 High Surface Temperature
WARNING:
Some surfaces of the equipment may become hot during operation.
The surface temperature may be up to several tens of degrees hotter
than the ambient temperature. Under these circumstances, the
equipment needs to be protected against accidental contact.
The equipment is intended for installation in a RESTRICTED ACCESS LOCATION.
Access can only be gained by SERVICE PERSONS or by USERS who have
been instructed about the reasons for the restrictions applied to the location
and about any precautions that shall be taken.
Access is through the use of a TOOL or lock and key, or other means of
security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

3.3 Memory Module Installation
The GRAND-BDE has four memory slots and supports DDR4 RDIMMs and UDIMMs. To
install a memory module, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Turn off the GRAND-BDE. Disconnect the power adaptor, network cable(s), and
any other connectors or cables from the GRAND-BDE.
Step 2: Put on an antistatic wrist strap to prevent electrostatic discharge. The crocodile
clip should be connected to the ground.
Step 3: Loosen the 2 screws on the rear of the GRAND-BDE as shown below.
Step 4: Pull the handle outwards to remove the motherboard drawer.
Step 5: Release the ejector clips gently by pulling them out of the sides of the RAM slot.
Step 6: Grip the new RAM on the edges to avoid touching contacts or circuitry on the
module.
