small piece of plastic located in the SIM card
holder in the back of your phone, underneath the

Removing the Battery

toward the antenna and lifting it out.
Battery Use and Maintenance
• The Motorola iDEN Approved Lithium Ion
chargers provide optimum performance. Other
chargers may not fully charge the iDEN Lithium
Ion battery or may yield a reduced number of
lifetime charge cycles.
• Extreme temperatures degrade battery
performance. Do not store the battery wh ere
temperatures exceed 140°F (60°C) or fall below
4°F (-20°C).
• Lithium Ion batteries have a self discharge rate
and without use, lose about 1% of their charge
per day.

• The battery capacity is degraded if the battery is
stored for long periods while fully charged. If
long term storage is required, store at half
capacity.
Powering On and Off
To power your phone on:
1 Open the flip.
2 Press p.
Note: When powering on, if you press p for
more than 5 seconds, you will turn on
Airplane mode. See “Ai rplane Mode—
Temporarily Turning Off Calls” on page
105.
As your phone connects to the network, you will
see a conn ecting message. When the idle screen

Personal Telephone Number (PTN), Nextel
Customer Care number, Direct Connect number,
and Talkgroup lists for Group Connect calls.

number is the number that others use to
contact you using Direct Connect

• Group ID — the number of the Talkgroup you

• Carrier IP — the IP address assigned to
Nextel. It is filled in when you register for
packet data services. To view your Carrier IP
address, scroll to Carrier IP and press O.
• IP1 Address and IP2 Address — the IP
addresses assigned to you for using the
Internet with your phone. To view your IP
addresses, scroll to the IP address you want
to view and press O.
•Ckt — Your circuit data number is the number
you use if you want to use your phone to
transfer circuit data. See “Using Your Phone
as a Modem” on page 51. You receive this
number from Nextel.

You can c ontrol many feat ures of your phone ,
includ ing the si ze of the te xt on the displa y, the way
you access main menu items, and the volume of
incoming sound, rings, and other tones. See

Any time your phone is power ed on, the display
provides you with information and options.

Display Options
Two display options appear at the bottom of most
screens. You select a display option by pressing
the option key below it.
Menus and Lis ts
Your phone’s features are arranged in menus,
submenus, and lis ts .
To acces s the items in a menu or list, scroll using
the navigation key at the top of your keypad. This
key lets you scroll up, down, left, or right. Holding
down the appropriate part of the navigation key
speeds up scrolling.
In this guide, this symbo l > tells you to select a
menu or list item. For example, Settings >
Security means:
1 Scroll to Settings on the main menu.
2 Press O to see the Settings screen.
3 Scroll to Security.
4 Press O to see the Security screen.

Quick Access to Main Menu Items
Each arrow in the navigation key and O can be
used to access a main menu item from the idle
screen. Each of these keys is assigned to a main
menu item when you receive your phone. To

time the phone is powered on. You can change the
PIN or turn off the requirement that it be entered.
Turning the PIN Requirement On and
Off
When the SIM PIN requirement is off, your phone
can be used without entering a PIN.
Important: When the SIM PIN requirement is off,

Unbl ocking the PIN
If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times, your SIM
card is blocked. To unbloc k your SIM card, you
must contact Nextel Customer Care to get a PIN
Unblock Code (PUK).
Important: If you unsuccessfully enter the PUK
To unblock the PIN:
1 Press *#m1.
2 At your Nextel Customer Care representative’s
request, provide the information nee ded to give
you a PUK cod e.
code 10 times, your SIM card is
permanently blocked and must be
replaced. If this happens, all data is
lost. You will get a message to contact
Nextel Customer Care. Except for
making emergency calls, your phone
will not function with a blocked SIM
card.
3 Select Unblock PIN.
4 Enter the PUK code.
5 Enter a new 4- to 8-digit SIM PIN.
6 Re-en ter yo ur S IM PI N .
Note: These steps must be performed in quick
succession.
If you entered the codes properly, SIM Unlocked
appears on the display.

Locking the Keypad
Locking the phone’s keypad prevents its buttons
from being pressed. Whe n the keypad is lock ed,
you can on ly:
• Power the phone on and off
• Unlock t he keypad
• Respond to incoming calls, messages, and
alerts
Important: Emergency calls cannot be placed

1 From the idle screen, press m.

While the keypad is locked, you can respond to
incomin g calls, messages, and alerts just as you
do when the keypad is not locked. When finished,
press e to return to the idle screen. The keypad
remains locked.
You also have the option of setting your phone to
automatically lock the keypad if there has been no
activity for a specified time.

2 To lock the keypad immediately, select Lock
Now. You will b e given the option to press m
and * to lock and unlock the keypad.
3 To set a specific time for the keypad to lock if
there has been no activit y, select Auto Lock

The keypad can be set to lock in 5, 10, 15 or 20
minutes if the keypad is not touche d during the
specified time. To turn the auto lock off, repeat
step 3 and select Off.

Antenna
The retractable antenna on your i710 phone is
design ed to be extended during calls.
To extend the antenna, pull gently on the rounded
tip unt il the a nt enna i s fu lly ex te nded a nd cl icks i nt o
position.
When finished with a call, retract the antenna by
pushing gently on the rounded tip until the antenna
clicks into place.
To optimize your phone’ s performance, extend the
antenna when you make or receive a call, and
avoid t ouching the antenna with any body part.
Important: Failure to fully extend or retract the
antenna until the antenna clicks into
place causes severely degraded
performance, which may result in
missed calls, dropped calls, or garbled
audio.

Wireless Local Number
Portability: Bringing Your
Phone Number From Another
Carrier
If you are bringing your phone numb er from
another carrier, your new phone will be active as
soon as you receive it. Nextel will provide you with
a temporary phone number so that you c an begin
using your phone immediately. Once the number
you have brought to Nextel is activated, your
temporary phone number will be deactivated and
servic e with your previous carrier wil l be cancelled
automatically. You will receive a text mess age on
your Nextel phone letting you know that activation
is complete. Simply turn your phone off and back
on again to complete activation.
Here is additional information you nee d to be
aware of until the number you have brought to
Nextel is active on the Nextel network:
Nextel® Vo ice Mail
We suggest you set up your voice mail box after
the number you brought to Nextel is active on your
Nextel phone and your temporary phone number is
deactivated. If you set up your voice mail box prior
to this, all messages and all set tings (includi ng
your greeting and password) will be lost when the
number you have brought to Nextel becomes
active.
Text Messaging
During the activation process, it is possible that text
messages may not be properly routed to your
Nextel phone.
911 Calls
Nextel co ntinues to make efforts to ensure th at all
911 call s are min imal ly imp ac ted b y th i s proc es s. If
you make a call to 911 from your temporary phone
number and the call fails , the 911 emergenc y
response cen ter wil l not b e a bl e to ca l l you b ac k on
your Nextel phone if in the m eantime your Nextel
phone ha s been pr o gram med w ith y our p erma ne nt
phone nu mber. As with any wir eless 911 call, if
your call is disconnect ed before location and
details have been provided, be sure to call 911
again an d advise that you wer e disconnected.

Your i710 phone makes two types of calls: di gital
cellul ar phone calls and Direct Connect calls. With
Direct Connect c alls, you use your phon e as a
long-range, digital walkie-talkie.
Phone Calls
1 Enter the number you want to call.

Close the flip.
To end a call by closing the flip, you must have the
Flip to End feature turned on (see “Setting Flip

Direct Connect® Calls
Nextel offers the following Direct Connect services:
• Direct Connect — allows walkie-talkie calling
within your local coverage area.
• Nationwide Direct Connect — allows
walkie-talkie calling to Nextel users from
anywhere on the Nextel National Network (U.S.)
to anywhere on the National Network.
• International Dire ct Connect — allows
walkie- ta lk ie calling to an d fr om se le ct co un tr i es .
• Group Connect — allow s wa lk ie -t al ki e ca lling to
up to 25 Nextel customers simultaneously (see
“Group C on ne c t TM Ca ll s” on page 49).

Connect services. Pricing for each of these
servic es is based on your service contract.

asterisks in case you travel with your
phone, or another Direct Connect user
whom you are trying to reach travels with
their phone, outside of your network.
Receiving Calls
Phone Calls
When you receive a phone call, your phone rings,
vibrates, or lights up its backlight.
Answering
If the flip is closed, press t. -or-
Open the flip. -or-
Press s. -or-
Press O. -or-
Press A under Yes. -or-
Press any number key.
To answe r a cal l by open i ng th e fl i p, yo u mus t ha ve
the Flip to Ans feature turned on (see “Setting Flip
Actions” on page 48). To answer a call by pressing
any number key, you must have the Any Key Ans
feature turned on (see “Phone Calls Fe atures” on
page 106).
Sending to Voice Mail
If the flip is closed, press .. -or-

Press A under No.
Ending
If the flip is closed, press .. -or-

Close the flip.
Direct Connect® Calls
When you receive a Direct Connect call, your
phone emits a chirping sound or vi brates.

2 Press and hold the PTT button on the si de of

3 Release the PTT button to listen.
