z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 brings the value
of innovative IBM System z technology to
VSE clients
z/VSE™ V4.2 is designed to deliver highest qualities of service for transactions and data.
z/VSE V4 is designed to address the needs of VSE clients with growing core VSE workloads and/or those
who wish to exploit Linux® on IBM System z® for new, Web-based business solutions and infrastructure
consolidation.
z/VSE is an important part of IBM’s mainframe portfolio for
smaller IBM mainframe clients with somewhat less demanding
requirements. At the risk of oversimplification, z/VSE is similar
to z/OS® but smaller and less complex.
z/VSE V4.2 supports the new IBM System z10 Business
Class™ (z10™ BC) and IBM System z10™ Enterprise
Class (z10 EC™), the IBM System z9® Enterprise Class
(z9® EC) and System z9 Business Class (z9 BC) servers, as
well as IBM eServer™ zSeries® 990, 890, 900 and 800.
z/VSE V4.2 operates in z/Architecture® mode only and sup-
ports 64-bit real addressing. It is designed to exploit up to
32 GB of processor storage.
z/VSE 4.2 doubles the number of VSE tasks to 512 and adds
an LDAP client. It supports Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) fea-
ture of the IBM System Storage™ series DS8000® and
DS6000™.
z/VSE 4.2 supports advanced functions of IBM System
Storage, including IBM System Storage DS8000 Full Disk
Encryption, DS8000 FlashCopy® SE (space efficient),
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller, as well as the
