Ibm ZVSE V4.2 User Manual

z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 brings the value of innovative IBM System z technology to VSE clients
z/VSE™ V4.2 is designed to deliver highest qualities of service for transactions and data.
z/VSE V4 is designed to address the needs of VSE clients with growing core VSE workloads and/or those who wish to exploit Linux® on IBM System z® for new, Web-based business solutions and infrastructure consolidation.
z/VSE is an important part of IBM’s mainframe portfolio for
requirements. At the risk of oversimplification, z/VSE is similar
to z/OS® but smaller and less complex.
z/VSE V4.2 supports the new IBM System z10 Business
Class™ (z10™ BC) and IBM System z10™ Enterprise
Class (z10 EC™), the IBM System z9® Enterprise Class
(z9® EC) and System z9 Business Class (z9 BC) servers, as
well as IBM eServer™ zSeries® 990, 890, 900 and 800.
z/VSE V4.2 operates in z/Architecture® mode only and sup-
ports 64-bit real addressing. It is designed to exploit up to
32 GB of processor storage.
z/VSE 4.2 doubles the number of VSE tasks to 512 and adds
an LDAP client. It supports Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) fea-
ture of the IBM System Storage™ series DS8000® and
DS6000™.
z/VSE 4.2 supports advanced functions of IBM System
Storage, including IBM System Storage DS8000 Full Disk
Encryption, DS8000 FlashCopy® SE (space efficient),
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller, as well as the
IBM System Storage TS4300 Tape Library and TS7700
Virtualization Engine—just to name a few.
z/VSE V4 offers Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC)
pricing, including sub-capacity pricing for clients running on
IBM System z10 BC™, z10 EC, z9 EC and z9 BC servers.
IBM is delivering a new world class enterprise server designed
to address the broadest range of business needs.
System z10 servers provide new, innovative technologies that
deliver dramatic improvements in price/performance for new
workloads. On the z10 BC, the combined effect of up to
40% more capacity in IFL and a 50% lower price is up to a
65% price performance improvement versus its predecessor,
the z9 BC. The z10 servers extend System z leadership in key
capabilities with the delivery of expanded scalability for growth
and consolidation, improved security and availability to reduce
risk and improved flexibility to respond to changing business
requirements. System z10 servers are at the core of the
enhanced System z platform that delivers technologies that
businesses need today along with a foundation to drive future
business growth.

Easy as PIE—the z/VSE strategy

It is essential that z/VSE clients have the option of continuing
to use their core VSE solutions while at the same time they’re
adding new solutions, regardless to which platform. New solu-
tions should be able to leverage and exploit existing core
z/VSE applications and data.
The z/VSE strategy addresses these client expectations with—
PIE—the acronym represents:
Protect
Integrate
Extend
Protect focuses on investment protection. z/VSE clients
should be able to exploit the latest IBM System z and
IBM System Storage technology to enhance and grow core
z/VSE environments.
Integrate enables seamless integration. z/VSE clients should
be able to extend their core z/VSE information assets into their
overall IT networks.
Extend refers to adding new IT solutions. z/VSE clients should
be able to extend their core z/VSE solutions with solutions that
exploit the advanced, standards-based capabilities of any plat-
form, especially Linux on System z.
The “PIE strategy” is fundamentally based on an open, hybrid
model. This hybrid model can give clients the best of both
worlds: it helps them protect their z/VSE investments as they
exploit the capabilities of complementary platforms. Indeed,
z/VSE plus Linux on the System z platform is a compelling
combination.

z/VSE solutions

z/VSE clients can select from a variety of existing solutions that
can simplify, integrate and automate their IT environment.
The solutions cover the flexible integration of z/VSE assets, for
example through:
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), supporting Web
Services requests using XML data and the SOA Protocol
(SOAP), to communicate with each other independent of the
platform and programming language;
easy data management with tools for optimization, tuning
1
and automation, provided by DB2® 9
for Linux; this is of
interest for z/VSE clients using DB2 and VSAM;
reusing and integrating CICS® transactions and applications
throughout the enterprise with the CICS Transaction
Gateway;
an assured message delivery—securely and reliably with
WebSphere® MQSeries®, a market leader for message-
oriented middleware;
exploitation of hardware encryption technology and support
of the OpenPGP standard with the Encryption Facility for
z/VSE, allowing for a flexible and highly secure data
exchange with business partners and peers;
Rational® COBOL Runtime for z/VSE enabling customers
to develop new applications using modern Enterprise
Generation Language (EGL) capability of Rational Business
Developer;
Web-enabling z/VSE resources with an intuitive look and
feel, avoiding the risk of rewriting applications;
reduced administration effort through a centralized, auto-
mated data protection across a heterogeneous IT environ-
ment with the Tivoli® Storage Manager.
z/VSE clients ensure continuity, reliability and security, support
open standards, help for easier management, reuse z/VSE
assets in dynamic ways, and potentially save cost.

New pricing options

Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC) is available on
the new System z10 BC and z10 EC, z9 EC and z9 BC. It
applies to z/VSE V4 (including the Encryption Facility for z/VSE
feature) and twelve key VSE-related middleware products,
including CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA™, IBM TCP/IP
for VSE/ESA, ACF/VTAM®, HLASM, DITTO, DB2 server for
VSE, DL/1, DFSORT™, COBOL, PL/1, C and MQ.
MWLC can be implemented in full-capacity or sub-capacity
2
mode. Sub-capacity users pay for MWLC-priced programs
based on the utilization of the Logical Partitions (LPARs) or vir-
tual machines where the system executes.
Sub-capacity pricing gives customers the option of consolidat-
ing smaller z/VSE workloads on the same z10 or z9 server
that also runs their core z/OS workloads.
When matching IT wants and needs with the z/VSE, Linux for
System z, z/VM®, and mainframe attributes, it is evident that
the unique combination forms a robust platform that is well-
positioned for growth and investment protection.
