When working on or around the system, observe the following precautions:
Electrical voltage and current from power, telephone, and communication cables are hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard:
v Connect power to this unit only with the IBM provided power cord. Do
not use the IBM provided power cord for any other product.
v Do not open or service any power supply assembly. v Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
v The product might be equipped with multiple power cords. To remove all
hazardous voltages, disconnect all power cords.
v Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical
outlet. Ensure that the outlet supplies proper voltage and phase rotation according to the system rating plate.
v Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly
wired outlets.
v When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal
cables.
v Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or
structural damage.
v Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,
networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
v Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following procedures
when installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.
To disconnect:
1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).
2. Remove the power cords from the outlets.
3. Remove the signal cables from the connectors.
4. Remove all cables from the devices. To connect:
1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).
2. Attach all cables to the devices.
3. Attach the signal cables to the connectors.
4. Attach the power cords to the outlets.
5. Turn on the devices.
v Sharp edges, corners and joints may be present in and around the
system. Use care when handling equipment to avoid cuts, scrapes and pinching.

Observe the following precautions when working on or around your IT rack system:
v Heavy equipment—personal injury or equipment damage might result if
mishandled.
v Always lower the leveling pads on the rack cabinet. v Always install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet. v To avoid hazardous conditions due to uneven mechanical loading,
always install the heaviest devices in the bottom of the rack cabinet. Always install servers and optional devices starting from the bottom of the rack cabinet.
v Rack-mounted devices are not to be used as shelves or work spaces. Do
not place objects on top of rack-mounted devices.
v Each rack cabinet might have more than one power cord. Be sure to
disconnect all power cords in the rack cabinet when directed to disconnect power during servicing.
v Connect all devices installed in a rack cabinet to power devices installed
in the same rack cabinet. Do not plug a power cord from a device installed in one rack cabinet into a power device installed in a different rack cabinet.
v An electrical outlet that is not correctly wired could place hazardous

CAUTION: v Do not install a unit in a rack where the internal rack ambient temperatures
will exceed the manufacturer’s recommended ambient temperature for all your rack-mounted devices.
v Do not install a unit in a rack where the air flow is compromised. Ensure
that air flow is not blocked or reduced on any side, front, or back of a unit used for air flow through the unit.
v Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the
supply circuit so that overloading of the circuits does not compromise the supply wiring or overcurrent protection. To provide the correct power connection to a rack, refer to the rating labels located on the equipment in the rack to determine the total power requirement of the supply circuit.
v (For sliding drawers) Do not pull out or install any drawer or feature if the
rack stabilizer brackets are not attached to the rack. Do not pull out more than one drawer at a time. The rack might become unstable if you pull out more than one drawer at a time.
v (For fixed drawers) This drawer is a fixed drawer and must not be moved
for servicing unless specified by the manufacturer. Attempting to move the drawer partially or completely out of the rack might cause the rack to become unstable or cause the drawer to fall out of the rack.

Chapter 1. Introduction

This Installation Guide provides information and instructions for installing, updating the firmware, and solving problems for an IBM G8264CS. For information about configuration and management of the converged switch, see the Command Reference for the IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS and the product release notes.
The IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS (converged switch) is a rackable aggregation switch with unmatched line-rate Layer 2 and Layer 3 performance. The IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS uses a wire-speed, non-blocking switching fabric that provides simultaneous wire-speed transport of Ethernet packets at low latency on all ports.
The IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS contains thirty-six 10 GbE small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) ports and four 40 GbE quad small form-factor pluggable plus (QSFP+) ports, and twelve Omni Ports. Omni Port technology allows the same port to be used as a 10 Gb Ethernet port (SFP+) or as a 4 Gbps or 8 Gbps Fibre Channel port. The SFP+ ports can be populated with optical or copper transceivers, or Direct Attach Cables (DACs). The QSFP+ ports can be populated with optical QSFP+ transceivers or DACs.
The IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS provides support for Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and routing, including Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE), 10 Gb Ethernet switching, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and FC/FCoE capabilities NPV (N_Port Virtualization) Gateway, and Full Fabric FC/FCoE switch.

System Networking RackSwitch
You can manage the switch through the console port, or through a network connection using Telnet, a web browser-based interface, or SNMP-based network management software. For more information, see Chapter 4, “Initializing the RackSwitch,” on page 49.

The switch might have features that are not described in the documentation that comes with the switch, and the documentation might be updated occasionally to include information about those features, or technical updates might be available to provide additional information that is not included in the switch documentation.

Switch unit

The switch unit is a 1U rack-mountable scalable switch. You can mount it in either the horizontal or vertical direction.
The switch allows for flexible mounting, as follows:

Reset button
The Reset button is recessed within a hole on the front panel. Use a straightened paper clip or similar object to press the Reset button. The Reset button enables you to reset the switch, as follows:
v Press Reset: The switch resets and reloads the configuration files. v Press and hold Reset for five seconds: The switch resets and configures all
settings to the factory defaults.
Fans
Four hot-swap internal fans cool the switch unit and are required for normal operation. If an individual fan fails, the other fans continue to run, and the switch unit continues to operate normally. You can replace a hot-swap fan module while the switch is operating.

Fan operation and internal temperatures are monitored. If the air temperature exceeds a threshold, the environmental monitor displays warning messages.
Note: If a fan module fails, the maximum operating temperature drops from 40°C to
35°C (104°F to 95°F).
The Service(!)LEDislitifthere is a failure of one or more fan modules. The failed fan module LED (rear panel) flashes to indicate a failure.
AC power supply
The switch has two hot-swap AC power supplies, 550 W for front-to-rear or 750 W for rear-to-front. Each internal power supply has an individual IEC 320 power connector on the rear panel. The power cord attaches to a universal grounded AC power source. You can replace a hot-swap power supply module without powering off the switch or disrupting switch functions.

Switch ports

Each power supply can be connected to a separate AC circuit to mitigate the risk of down time during a power failure. When used in a redundant configuration, the dual power supplies have a load-sharing capability that enables each power supply to operate at approximately 50 percent of full load. Using redundant power can minimize the power disruption during a power supply failure and extend the expected lifetime of each power supply by operating normally in a conservative power mode.
There is no power switch on the IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS; the switch unit powers up when power is supplied through the power cords.
The Power Supply LED indicates the status of the power supplies. The LED flashes when only one power cord is connected, and is steady when both power cords are connected.

SFP+ ports

Forty-eight 10 GbE SFP+ ports (twelve ports can be used as SPF+ Omni Ports) are located on the front panel. These ports accept approved optical or copper SFP and SFP+ transceivers and SFP+ active and passive DAC cables. Transceivers must be purchased separately.

QSFP+ ports
Four 40 GbE QSFP+ ports are located on the front panel. These ports accept supported optical QSFP+ transceivers or DACs. The supported transceivers interoperate with any 40 GBASE-SR4 compliant device, and support distances up to 100 meters on OM3 fiber. Transceivers must be purchased separately.
QSFP+ ports allow you to make one 40 GbE connection, or four 10 GbE connections, using a breakout cable, as follows:
v QSFP+ optical transceiver with MTP-to-4 LC (SFP+) fiber breakout cable. This
option supports only IBM 10 GBASE-SR SFP+ transceivers. The 40 GBASE-SR4 specification (802.3ba-2010) indicates a higher optical power level than standard 10 GBASE-SR. IBM SFP+ SR transceivers can handle the higher optical power levels. This cable must be purchased separately from your fiber cable supplier.
v QSFP+ to four 10 GbE SFP+ breakout DAC. The SFP+ connectors on supported
breakout DACs are labelled A, B, C, and D, which correspond to the first, second, third, and fourth ports in the port range. This cable must be purchased separately from your fiber cable supplier.

Fibre Channel/Ethernet Omni Ports
Features of Fibre Channel/Ethernet Omni Ports include: v Each Omni Port is capable of running in 10 Gb Ethernet mode or four to eight
Gb Fibre Channel (FC) mode with auto-negotiation capability.
v Support for NPV (N_Port Virtualization) Gateway provides connectivity to the
Fibre Channel SAN.
v Support for FC-BB-5 Compliant Full Fabric FC/FCoE switch. Fabric Services are
Name Server, Registered State Change Notification (RSCN), Login Services and Zoning (WWN, FCID or Alias-based Zoning).
Console port
The RS-232 (mini-USB) serial console port is located on the front panel, see Figure 1 on page 5. The following table describes the pinouts for the mini-USB port.

The USB port is located on the front panel, see Figure 1 on page 5. It allows you to connect a USB drive to the switch. You can copy files from the switch to the USB drive, or from the USB drive to the switch. You can also start the switch using files on the USB drive.

Note: When replacing a RackSwitch chassis, all internal components must also be
removed from the chassis and replaced in the new chassis. For more information on removing and replacing the RackSwitch and components, see Chapter 3, “Removing and replacing the RackSwitch and components,” on page 37.

Before installing the RackSwitch

Locate and record the important product information about the switch in the following table. The identification labels contain the machine-type model (MTM) number, serial number and part number (front, rear panel and/or bottom of the unit), and the media access control (MAC) address (rear of unit) for the switch. The MAC address is not required for opening a service call.
You can also review and record your product serial number and other required information through the software interface by issuing the show sys-info command using the ISCLI interface or the /info/sys/general command using the MenuCLI interface. For more information about these commands, see “Configuring Vital Product Data after a switch replacement” on page 46.
After the switch is installed most of the identification labels are hidden from view and require removing the switch in order to relocate them.
Attention: This product information is required to register your product, to update your firmware, place a service call, and replace the RackSwitch.

MTM and part numbers than your unit.

Environmental requirements

This section describes the basic environmental requirements for the RackSwitch. Make sure the location where you install the switch meets the following requirements:
v Install the switch unit in a dry, clean, well-ventilated area. v Provide adequate space in the front and back of the switch unit, to ensure proper
air flow.
v Make sure that an adequate grounded power supply is within reach of the switch
unit.
v Make sure that twisted-pair cable is routed away from power lines, fluorescent
lighting fixtures and other sources of electrical interference.

Preventing electric shock

This product does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Do not remove the cover of this device.
The RackSwitch AC power model is designed to work with single-phase power systems that have a grounded neutral conductor. To reduce the risk of electric shock, always plug the power cord into a grounded power outlet.

When working on or around the system, observe the following precautions:
Electrical voltage and current from power, telephone, and communication cables are hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard:
v Connect power to this unit only with the provided power cord. Do not
use the provided power cord for any other product.
v Do not open or service any power supply assembly. v Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
v The product might be equipped with multiple power cords. To remove all
hazardous voltages, disconnect all power cords.
v Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical
outlet. Ensure that the outlet supplies proper voltage and phase rotation according to the system rating plate.
v Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly
wired outlets.
v When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal
cables.
v Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or
structural damage.
v Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,
networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
v Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following procedures
when installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.
To disconnect:
1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).
2. Remove the power cords from the outlets.
3. Remove the signal cables from the connectors.
4. Remove all cables from the devices. To connect:
1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).
2. Attach all cables to the devices.
3. Attach the signal cables to the connectors.
4. Attach the power cords to the outlets.

Handling static-sensitive devices

Attention: Static electricity can damage the switch and other electronic devices.
To avoid damage, keep static-sensitive devices in their static-protective packages until you are ready to install them.
To reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharge, observe the following precautions:
v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around
you.
v The use of a grounding system is recommended. For example, wear an
electrostatic-discharge wrist strap, if one is available.
v Handle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame. v Do not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed printed circuitry. v Do not leave the device where others can handle and damage it. v While the device is still in its static-protective package, touch it to an unpainted
metal part of any unpainted metal surface on a grounded rack component in the rack in which you are installing the device, for at least 2 seconds. This drains static electricity from the package and from your body.
v Remove the device from its package and install it directly into the switch without
setting it down. If it is necessary to set down the device, put it back into its static-protective package. Do not place the device on a switch cover or on a metal surface.
v Take additional care when you handle devices during cold weather. Heating
reduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.

Installing the RackSwitch in a standard equipment rack

This section describes how to install the RackSwitch in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. For information about mounting the switch in other rack types, see the following sections:

Installing an SFP copper transceiver

The SFP copper transceiver provides an RJ-45 connector that accepts a standard 1 Gb cable.
To install an SFP copper transceiver in an SFP+ port on the switch unit, complete the following steps.
Note: To avoid damage to the cable or the SFP transceiver, do not connect the
cable before you install the transceiver.
1. Remove the safety cap and pull the locking lever into the down (unlocked) position.
2. Insert the transceiver into the port until it clicks into place. Use minimal pressure when you insert the transceiver into the slot. Do not use excessive force when you insert the transceiver; you can damage the transceiver or the SFP slot.
The transceiver has a mechanical guide key to prevent you from inserting the transceiver incorrectly.
3. Pull up the locking lever to lock the transceiver into place.
4. Connect the cable. To remove a SFP copper transceiver, disconnect the cable, and pull down the
locking lever to release the transceiver. After you remove the transceiver, replace the safety cap.

Removing and replacing a power supply module

The IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS operates with two active power supply modules. You can replace a hot-swap power supply module without powering off the switch or disrupting switch functions.
Two power supplies are required for normal operation. The switch continues to operate when there is one failed power supply. If one power supply fails, the power LED and blue LED flashes and the switch sends an error message. For correct airflow, both power supply slots must be populated with either a power supply module or a blank module.
Each AC power supply module has a power cord for connection to an AC power outlet.

3. Turn on the power at the power source.
4. Make sure that the power supply OK and AC LEDs are green.

Removing and replacing a fan module

The IBM System Networking RackSwitch G8264CS contains up to four hot-swap fan modules. Four fan modules are required for high availability operation.
The switch continues to operate when there is one failed fan module. If one fan fails, the switch sends an error message. If a second fan fails, the switch sends an error message, writes a failure log to flash memory, and shuts down.
Each fan module has a green LED that is visible from the rear panel. The LED shows the status of the fan module, as follows:

Removing a fan module

To remove a fan module, complete the following steps:
1. Loosen the retainer screw.

Replacing a fan module

To replace a fan module, complete the following steps:
1. If necessary, remove the filler plate from the appropriate slot. Loosen the retainer screws and slide the filler plate out of the slot.
2. Remove the fan module from the antistatic shielded bag.
3. Slide the fan module into the card guides in the open slot and gently push it all the way into the slot, so that it firmly engages with the connector (see the illustration). Each fan module has a mechanical guide key to prevent you from inserting the module incorrectly.
4. Tighten the retaining screw on the fan module. Torque the screw to approximately 0.5 Nm (4 inch-pounds).

Removing the 1U air duct option

To remove the 1U air duct option from a 19" rack, complete the following steps.
1. Loosen the two M4 thumbscrews securing the air duct unit to the air duct brackets.

Removing and replacing the main RackSwitch chassis unit

When replacing a RackSwitch chassis unit, all internal component must also be removed from the chassis and replaced in the new chassis. The RackSwitch operates with one or two active power supplies, up to four fan modules, and an optional air duct unit.
When you remove a RackSwitch unit from the rack, record the product MTM number and serial number to use for the replacement switch, see “Before installing the RackSwitch” on page 15 to locate the product information labels on the switch chassis or “Configuring Vital Product Data after a switch replacement” to use an interface to display the product information for the RackSwitch.
Before you replace the RackSwitch chassis, you must remove and replace the separate components. For more information about removing and replacing RackSwitch components, see the following sections:
v “Removing and replacing a power supply module” on page 42 v “Removing and replacing a fan module” on page 44
To return the chassis to customer service for replacement, see Appendix A, “Getting help and technical assistance,” on page 65, to help you gather all the required information that is necessary to return a component. After you remove the chassis unit, securely pack the RackSwitch unit for shipping.
To replace the RackSwitch chassis in the rack, see the following procedures and perform them in the order in which they are listed.

Configuring Vital Product Data after a switch replacement

After you replace a RackSwitch, you must update the new switch with the VPD of the RackSwitch being removed to avoid losing the licensed electronic entitlement data of the RackSwitch. The VPD includes the model and serial number of the switch. For more information on locating the VPD, see “Before installing the RackSwitch” on page 15.
To update the VPD on a new switch, complete the following steps.
1. Log in to the switch and in the CLI mode, type
RS G8264>ibmnos
2. At the Password prompt, enter the switch password, and press Enter. The default password is admin.
3. In the main menu, enter the MTM number for the replacement switch. For example:

Default configuration

The switch software contains default factory-loaded configuration files. The default configuration is part of the software; it cannot be deleted or changed. The default settings allow the switch to perform basic functions with minimal effort by the system administrator. DHCP is enabled by default on the management interfaces and BOOTP is enabled by default on interface 1. If there is no DHCP offer received, the device uses the default Mgmt _IP address (192.168.50.50/24). This address is overwritten when a DHCP/BOOTP address is received for that interface. If DHCP/BOOTP is enabled and there is no static address configured for DHCP/BOOTP requests will continue to be sent. This feature does not change existing DHCP/BOOTP functionality. See the following initial configuration example:

Updating firmware

If firmware and documentation updates are available, you can download them from http://www.ibm.com/supportportal/. The switch might have features that are not described in the documentation that comes with the switch, and the documentation might be updated occasionally to include information about those features, or technical updates might be available to provide additional information that is not included in the switch documentation.
Configuration settings are lost during a firmware update. Before updating the firmware, save a copy of the configuration on a separate device. In the event of a failed update, the saved configuration can be restored. For more information about the configuration file, see the Application Guide and Command Reference for the switch.
Attention: Installing the wrong firmware update might cause the network switch to malfunction. Before you install a firmware, read any readme and change history files that are provided with the downloaded update. These files contain important information about the update and the procedure for installing the update, including any special procedure for updating from an early firmware version to the latest version.
The RackSwitch supports a command-line interface (CLI) that you can use to configure and control the switch over the network using the Telnet program. You can use the CLI to perform many basic network management functions. In addition, you can configure the switch for management by using an SNMP-based network management system or a web browser.

Using the Boot Management menu

The Boot Management menu enables you to switch the software image, reset the switch to factory defaults, or to recover from a failed software download.

Chapter 5. Troubleshooting

This section contains basic troubleshooting information to help resolve problems that might occur during installation and operation of the switch. If you have problems accessing the switch or working with the software, see the Command Reference for your switch module.
For information about calling IBM for service, see Appendix A, “Getting help and technical assistance,” on page 65.

System LED is not lit

Symptom: The power supply LED is not lit.
Solution: Check the power supply to make sure that there is a proper connection
to the power source. Make sure that power is available from the power source.

Port link LED is not lit

Symptom: The port link LED is not lit.
Solution 1: Check the port configuration in the software (see the Command
Reference for your switch module). If the port is configured with a specific speed or duplex mode, check the other device to make sure that it is set to the same configuration. If the switch port is set to auto-negotiate, make sure that the other device is set to auto-negotiate.
Solution 2: Check the cables that connect the port to the other device. Make sure that they are connected correctly. Make sure that you are using the correct cable type.

Temperature sensor warning

Symptom: A temperature warning is displayed on the management console.
Solution: Make sure that the air circulation vents on the front, back, and sides of
the switch are free from obstruction by cables, panels, rack frames, or other materials.
Make sure that all cooling fans inside the switch are running. A fan module LED (rear panel) flashes if there is a failure of the fan. The following command displays fan status:
show sys-info
If any fan stops during switch operation, contact Customer Support.

Switch does not initialize (boot)

Symptom: All the switch LEDs stay on, and the command prompt is not displayed
on the console.
Solution: The operating system might be damaged. Use the console port to perform a serial upgrade of the switch software. See the Command Reference for your switch module.

The replaceable switch parts are Tier 1 customer replaceable units (CRUs). Replacement of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.

For your safety, a power cord with a ground attachment plug is available to order for use with this product. To avoid electrical shock, always use the power cord and plug with a properly grounded outlet.
Power cords for this product that are used in the United States and Canada are listed by Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) and certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
For units intended to be operated at 115 volts: Use a UL-listed and CSA-certified cord set consisting of a minimum of 18 AWG, Type SVT or SJT, three-conductor cord, a maximum of 15 feet in length and a parallel blade, grounding-type attachment plug rated 15 amperes, 125 volts.

Appendix A. Getting help and technical assistance

If you need help, service, or technical assistance or just want more information about IBM products, you will find a wide variety of sources available from IBM to assist you. Use this information to obtain additional information about IBM and IBM products, determine what to do if you experience a problem with your IBM system or optional device, and determine whom to call for service, if it is necessary.

Before you call

Before you call, make sure that you have taken these steps to try to solve the problem yourself:
v Check all cables to make sure that they are connected. v Check the power switches to make sure that the system and any optional
devices are turned on.
v Check for updated firmware and operating-system device drivers for your IBM
product at www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral. The IBM Warranty terms and conditions state that you, the owner of the IBM product, are responsible for maintaining and updating all software and firmware for the product (unless it is covered by an additional maintenance contract). Your IBM service technician will request that you upgrade your software and firmware if the problem has a documented solution within a software upgrade.

Opening a support request

To open a support call, complete the following steps.
1. Create a brief problem description and a prioritization for your support call.
2. Gather the required product information to provide to IBM Support. The serial number and MTM (IBM 4-digit machine identifier) are on the product label and will help IBM Support quickly provide a solution to your problem and ensure that you receive the level of service for which you might have contracted.
3. Gather your hardware and software maintenance agreement contract numbers, if applicable.
4. Gather other pertinent information such as error messages and logs.
You can determine the product MTM and serial number in the following ways: v Locate the product information labels on the bottom of the switch, see “Before
installing the RackSwitch” on page 15.
v If the firmware is at 7.6.x.x or later, you can determine the machine type model
(MTM) and serial number through the interface. For more information on locating the MTM and serial number (VPD) through the interface, see “Configuring Vital Product Data after a switch replacement” on page 46.
After you gather your product information, you can submit a service request in either of two ways:
v In the U.S. and Canada, call 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) to open a

CD or DVD drive speed is the variable read rate. Actual speeds vary and are often less than the possible maximum.
When referring to processor storage, real and virtual storage, or channel volume, KB stands for 1024 bytes, MB stands for 1,048,576 bytes, and GB stands for 1,073,741,824 bytes.
When referring to hard disk drive capacity or communications volume, MB stands for 1,000,000 bytes, and GB stands for 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total user-accessible capacity can vary depending on operating environments.
Maximum internal hard disk drive capacities assume the replacement of any standard hard disk drives and population of all hard disk drive bays with the largest currently supported drives that are available from IBM.
Maximum memory might require replacement of the standard memory with an optional memory module.
Each solid-state memory cell has an intrinsic, finite number of write cycles that the cell can incur. Therefore, a solid-state device has a maximum number of write cycles that it can be subjected to, expressed as “total bytes written” (TBW). A device that has exceeded this limit might fail to respond to system-generated commands or might be incapable of being written to. IBM is not responsible for replacement of a device that has exceeded its maximum guaranteed number of program/erase cycles, as documented in the Official Published Specifications for the device.

Particulate contamination

Attention: Airborne particulates (including metal flakes or particles) and reactive
gases acting alone or in combination with other environmental factors such as humidity or temperature might pose a risk to the device that is described in this document. Risks that are posed by the presence of excessive particulate levels or concentrations of harmful gases include damage that might cause the device to malfunction or cease functioning altogether. This specification sets forth limits for particulates and gases that are intended to avoid such damage. The limits must not be viewed or used as definitive limits, because numerous other factors, such as temperature or moisture content of the air, can influence the impact of particulates or environmental corrosives and gaseous contaminant transfer. In the absence of specific limits that are set forth in this document, you must implement practices that maintain particulate and gas levels that are consistent with the protection of human health and safety. If IBM determines that the levels of particulates or gases in your environment have caused damage to the device, IBM may condition provision of repair or replacement of devices or parts on implementation of appropriate remedial measures to mitigate such environmental contamination. Implementation of such remedial measures is a customer responsibility.
