Major components of the Netfinity 5100 server
The orange color on components and labels in your server identif ies hot-swap components. This means that you can install or remove the component while the system is running, provided that your system is configured to support this function. For information about installing or removing a hot-swap component , s ee Chapter 2. Installing Options, on page 5.
The blue color on components and labels indicates touch points where a component can be gripped, a latch moved, and so on.

Chapter 2. Installing Options
This chapter provides the basic information needed to ins tall hardware options in your server. This section is for all users, but is written with the experienced user in mind. If you need more detailed installation information, refer to the User’s Reference on the IBM Netfinity Documentat ion CD.
Working with adapters
Working with adapters
Y ou can install up to five peripheral component interconnect (PCI) adapters in the PCI slots on the system board.
Your server comes with an integrated video controller, which is a component on the system board. When you install a video adapter, the server BIOS automatically disables the integrated video controller.
The following illustration shows the location of the 33 M Hz PCI expansion slots Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware.

Installing an adapter
Adapter considerations
Before you install adapters, review the following:
Locate the documentation that comes with the adapter and follow those instructions in addition to the instructio ns given in this chapter. If you need to change the switch or jumper settings on your adapter, follow the instructions that come with the adapter.
You can install full-length adapters in all expansion slots.
You ca n install a 32-bit adapter in an y of the PCI slots, but you might want to
install it in a 32-bit slot and use the 6 4-b it slots for 64-bit adapters.
Your server supports 5.0V and universal PCI adapters; it does not support 3.3V adapters.
Your server uses a rotational interrupt technique to configure PCI adapters. Because of this technique, you can install a variety of PCI adapters that currently do not support sharing of PCI interrupts.
PCI slots 1 and 2 are on PCI bus A and PCI slots 3, 4, and 5 are on PCI bus B. PCI bus A is often referred to as bus 0; PCI bus B is often referred to as bus 1. The system scans PCI slots 1 through 5 to a ssign system resources; then, if you have not changed the boot precedence from the default, the system starts (boots) the PCI devices in the following order: PCI slots 1 and 2, system board SCSI devices, and then PCI slot s 3 through 5.
Note: To change the boot precedence for PCI devices, start the
Configuration/Setup Utility program, and select Start Options from the main menu. Refer to the Users Reference on the IBM Netfinity Documentation CD for details on using the Configuration/Setup Utility program.

Chapter 2. Installing Options 7
Installing an adapter
To install an adapter: Attention: When you handle Electrostatic Discharge-Sensitive devices (ESD), take
precautions to avoid damage from static electricity. For details on handling these devices, refer to the following Web site and use a search term of ESD: http://www.ibm.com/
1. Review the safety precautions listed in “Safety” on page v.
2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect all external cables and power cords.
3. Remove the cover.
4. Remove the adapter-retention bracket.
5. Remove the expansion-slot cover.
6. Refer to the documentation that comes with your adapt er for any cablin g instructions.
7. Set any jumpers or switches as described by the adapter manufacturer.
8. Install the adapter:
a. If necessary, remove the adapter support bracket retaining clip. b. Press the adapter firmly into the expansion slot.
Attention: Incomplete insertion might cause damage to the system board or the adapter.
c. Replace the retaining clip on the adapter support bracket, if you removed it.
d. Reinsert the adapter retention bracket.
9. Connect any needed cables to the adapter. Attention: Route cables so that they do not block the flow of air from the fans. The following illustration shows the rerouting of the SCSI cable if you install a
ServeRAID adapter (remove the cable from SCSI connector A (J17) on the system board and attach it to the connector on the RAID adapter).
10. Replace the cover.
11. Reconnect the external cables and power cords; then, turn on the server.

Installing memory modules
Installing memory modules
Installing memory modules
Your server comes with a dual inline memory module (DIMM) installed on the system board in DIMM connector 1 (J23).
Notes:
1. Install additional DIMM s in the order specified in the documentation that comes with your option. (See the following illustration for memory connector locations.)
2. Your Netfinity 5100 server supports 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB DIMMs. Your server supports a maximum of 4GB of system memory. See the ServerProven list at http://www.ibm.com/pc/compat for a list of memory modules for use with your server.
3. Installing or removing DIMMs changes the confi guration information in the server. Therefore, after installing or removing a DIMM, you must save the new configuration information by using the Configuration/Setup Utility program. When you restart the server, the system displays a message that indicates that the memory configuration has changed. Start the Configuration/Setup Uti lity program and select Save Settings. Refer to the Users Ref erence on the IBM Netfinity Documentation CD for more information.
Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware.
