1.2. Carbon monoxide (where applicable).
1.2.1. Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas. Inhaling this gas can cause
death as well as serious long term health problems such as brain damage.
1.2.2. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include but are not limited
to the following;
1.2.2.1. Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms are similar to flu, food
poisoning, viral infections and simply tiredness. It is quite common for people to mistake this very dangerous poisoning for something else.
1.2.2.2. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning DO NOT use Petrol/Diesel-
powered equipment inside any of the following;
This list is not exhaustive and if you are in any doubt contact your dealer.
1.2.3. If you think you have or someone around you has been affected by carbon
monoxide poisoning;
1.2.3.1. Get them fresh air immediately, by leaving the affected area or by
opening doors and windows. If safe and practical to do so make sure that the machine is turned off. DO NOT enter a room you suspect of having carbon monoxide present – instead call the emergency services.
1.2.3.2. Contact a doctor immediately or go to hospital - let them know that
you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.
1.2.4. DO NOT use in an enclosed area or a moving vehicle.

1.3. General fuel safety (where applicable).
2. ALL FUELS ARE FLAMMABLE
1.3.1. Fire hazard - keep fuel away from all sources of ignition for example heaters,
lamps, sparks from grinding or welding.
1.3.2. DO NOT carry out hot work on tanks that have contained fuel it is extremely
dangerous
1.3.3. ALWAYS keep work area clean and tidy.
1.3.4. ALWAYS clean up all spills promptly using correct methods i.e. absorbent
granules and a lidded bin.
1.3.5. ALWAYS Dispose of waste fuels correctly.
1.4. Fueling/De-fueling (where applicable).
3. ALL FUELS ARE FLAMMABLE
1.4.1. ALWAYS fuel and defuel in a well-ventilated area outside of buildings.
1.4.2. ALWAYS wear correct, suitable and fit for purpose Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE), suggested items are but not limited to safety gloves and overalls.
1.4.3. When fueling/de-fueling ALWAYS avoid inhaling fumes
1.4.4. When de-fueling ALWAYS use a propriety fuel retriever.
1.4.5. ALWAYS carry fuel in the correct and clearly marked container.
1.5. Vibrations (where applicable).
1.5.1. Prolonged use of hand held (operated) machines will cause the user to feel the
effects of/from vibrations. These vibrations can lead to white finger (Raynaud's phenomenon) or carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition reduces
Page 6
the ability of the hand to feel and regulate temperature, causing numbness and heat sensations and may cause nerve damage and circulatory tissue death.
1.5.2. Not all factors that lead to white finger disease are known, but cold weather,
smoking and other diseases that affect blood vessels and blood circulation as well as large and long-lasting impact of shocks are considered factors called in the formation of white finger. Note the following to reduce the risk the white finger and carpal tunnel syndrome:
1.5.2.1. Wear gloves and keep your hands warm
1.5.2.2. Take regular breaks
1.5.3. All of the above precautions may help reduce the risk of white finger disease
but not rule out carpal tunnel syndrome. Long-term and regular users are therefore recommended to observe the condition of your hands and fingers. Seek medical attention immediately if any of the above symptoms should occur.
1.6. Noise (where applicable).
1.6.1. The operating noise of the machine can damage your hearing. Wear hearing
protection such as earplugs or ear defenders to protect your hearing. Longterm and regular users are advised to have hearing checked regularly. Be especially vigilant and cautious when wearing hearing protection because your ability to hear alarm warnings will be reduced.
1.6.2. Noise emissions for this equipment is unavoidable. Carry out noisy work at
approved times and for certain periods. Limit the working time to a minimum. For your personal protection and protection of people working nearby it is also advisable for them to wear hearing protection.
1.6.3. See CERTIFICATE of CONFORMITY section for Outdoor Noise declaration of
conformity.
4. MACHINE SPECIFIC SAFETY
2.1. Machine usage and care.
These compactors are not intended to be used on cohesive soils such
clay or hard surfaces like concrete.
2.1.1. The Plate Compactor applies energy to the loose soil or other materials to
increase its density and load bearing capacity, mainly used for small repair and maintenance work. The loose soil or particles are moved or rearranged in a particular manner close to each other to avoid any trapped air or voids. It increases the load bearing capacity, decreases water seepage, prevents soil settlement, reduces swelling, contraction of the soil and prevents frost damage. It is ideal for compaction of granular soils, sands, gravel, crushed aggregate and mixed soils.

2.1.2. Never pick up or carry a machine while the engine is running.
2.1.3. DO NOT force the machine. Use the correct machine for your application. The
correct machine will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
2.1.4. DO NOT change the engine governor settings or over-speed the engine. The
governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine.
2.1.5. DO NOT run the engine at a high speed when you are not pounding.
2.1.6. DO NOT put hands or feet near rotating parts.
2.1.7. AVOID contact with hot fuel, oil, exhaust fumes and hot surfaces. Do not touch
the engine or muffler. These parts get extremely hot from operation. They remain hot for a short time after you turn off the unit. Allow the engine to cool before doing maintenance or making adjustments.
2.1.8. If the machine should start to make an unusual noise or vibration, immediately
shut off the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and check for the cause. Unusual noise or vibration is generally warning of trouble. DO NOT use until source of problem is resolved or repaired
2.1.9. Use only attachments and accessories approved by the manufacturer. Failure
to do so can result in personal injury.
2.1.10. Maintain the machine. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts,
breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the machine’s
operation. If damaged, have the machine repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained equipment.
2.1.11. Keep the engine and muffler free of grass, leaves, excessive grease or carbon
build up to reduce the chance of a fire hazard.
2.1.12. Never douse or squirt the unit with water or any other liquid. Keep handles
dry, clean and free from debris. Clean after each use.
2.1.13. Observe proper disposal laws and regulations for gas, oil, etc. to protect the
environment.
2.1.14. You MUST store idle machine out of the reach of children and do not allow
persons unfamiliar with the machine or these instructions to operate it. Machine is dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
2.1.15. To avoid injury, keep hands, fingers and feet away from the base plate. Grip
the handle of the plate compactor firmly with both hands. If both hands are holding the handle and your feet are clear of the compactor base, your hands, fingers and feet cannot be injured by the compactor base.
2.1.16. ALWAYS operate the machine from behind, never pass or stand in front of
the machine when the engine is running.
2.1.17. NEVER place tools or any other item under the plate compactor.
2.1.18. If the unit strikes a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug,
thoroughly inspect the machine for any damage, and repair the damage before restarting and operating the machine.
2.1.19. DO NOT overload the machine capacity by compacting too deep in a single
pass or at too fast a rate.
2.1.20. Never operate the unit at high transport speeds on hard or slippery surfaces.
Page 8
2.1.21. Exercise extreme caution when operating on or crossing gravel drives, walks,
or roads. Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic. Do not carry passengers.
2.1.22. NEVER leave the operating position and leave the plate compactor
unattended when the engine is running.
2.1.23. You MUST always stop the engine when compacting is delayed or when
walking from one location to another.
2.1.24. Stay away from the edge of ditches and avoid actions that may cause the
plate compactor to topple over.
2.1.25. Always ascend slopes carefully, in a direct path and in reverse to present the
plate compactor from toppling over onto the operator.
2.1.26. Always park the unit on a firm and level surface and shut the tool off.
2.1.27. To reduce exposure to vibration, limit the hours of operation and take
periodic breaks to minimize repetition and rest your hand. Reduce the speed and force in which you do the repetitive movement. Try to fill each day with jobs where operating hand-held power equipment is not required.
