HE Hullo “
signed for heavy-duly work lhat is the grind
T
ing of cylinder bores of exceedingly large
diameters and long lengths, such as Diesel liners,
gun bores, large pump and compressor cylinders,
marine engine cylinders, various locomotive cylin
ders, etc.
This type of grinder is manufactured only on
special order to take care of
bore lengths within certain limits, but it is quite
flexible in its application to various diameter bores
for the following reasons. It will be noted from the
illustration on the opposite page that the abrasive
stones are held firmly in place on each end of master
stone holders, each of which is in turn
two pivoted pins inserted in pin holes in cast-iron
flanges. These pins pass entirely through the flanges
and their beveled ends bear on two double opposed
cones which when drawn together by the adjusting
mechanism force the stones outward against the
cylinder walls. There are therefore two means of
securing a wide range of adjustments with a single
grinder. First, by providing spacing washers of
various thicknesses, which are fitted between the
abrasive stone proper and the master stone holder,
and the other means is by providing flanges of
various diameters which may be easily and quickly
removed from the grinder body and replaced by
others.
Circular stone retaining springs serve the purpose
of preventing the stones from flying outward due to
centrifugal force and falling into scores, ports or
key ways while the grinder is in operation.
On this type of grinder the well known llutto
micrometer set and automatic stop feature and
adjustment while in motion is incorporated directly
in the grinder itself. The grinder is driven by a solid
double ball universal which operates in a bayonet
slot in the grinder and also in the taper shank
adapter or the spindle of the machine.
The proper operation of this grinder as all other
Mill to grinders requires a reciprocating as well as a
revolving motion. Considerable power is required in
order to remove the required amount of stock in a
given time and provide the
ing of the abrasive stones. For this reason it is im
perative that the Model “C” grinder be operated

average of .018" of corroded copper and steel was

within accuracy limits of plus or minus .001".
While this is an unusual piece of work il is merely
mentioned as an illustration of the unlimited possi
bilities
in the application
of cylinder grinding. Many instances are on record
of where Hutto grinding has lowered production
costs and either reduced materially or entirely
eliminated running in.
Our engineering facilities and experience are
available at all times without obligation and an
analysis of any internal grinding problem will be
cheerfully given. Experienced factory representa
tives are available to install Hutto equipment and
properly instruct the operator in its use.
