o One compressor version for all temperature ranges using R404A, R507,
and R22
x Smooth and Quiet Operation can be Attributed to:
o Short stroke operation o Multiple cylinders positioned to avoid harmonic frequencies o Balanced drive systems o Cylinder heads with cast in muffler o Precision machining
x Unloaders
o 1 step (50%) capacity control on 4-cylinder models o 2 steps (33%, 66%) capacity control on 6-cylinder models
x Motors
o Dual voltage on models above 1480 CFH o Motor efficiency 90% or greater o Electronic motor protection with embedded thermisters to sense motor
winding temperatures
x Oil System – IR4C models, smaller 4 cylinder compressors
o Enhanced centrifugal lubrication system o Front main bearing is located in cavity on front bearing plate and is
submersed in oil
o Fills front bearing cavity with oil in a fraction of a second o When oil is diluted with refrigerant, separation of oil and refrigerant takes
place as the oil is “slung” against the front bearing cover
o Oil travels down internal passages in the crankshaft, driven by centrifugal
force. This lubricates the connecting rod bearings and motor bearings
o Hydrodynamic lubrication provides enough oil and pressure to lubricate
the bearings without floating the bearing in oil
o Piston pin bearings are splash lubricated by the connecting rod o Oil carry over is minimized since high-pressure oil is not forced into the
motor cavity
o Efficiency is increased since no power is required to drive an oil pump

o Bearing composition is metal and PTFE (Teflon) o Allows for safe operation during marginal lubrication periods
x Eccentric Rods
o Aluminum alloy o High quality and low tolerances can be maintained due to one-piece
construction
o Low bearing loading & high velocities, increase the running capability of
bearings under boundary lubrication conditions
x Crankshaft
o High quality cast iron o A gas nitration process hardens all crankshafts o Hardening provides a better bearing surface with excellent wear resistance
x Crankcase Design
o Allows for large oil volume in a compact housing o Refrigerant flow paths and oil system reduce oil carry-over and reduce
liquid slugging potential during starting conditions
o Special gray cast iron provides durability and excellent heat transfer
characteristics
o Single casting requires only motor end bell cover and front bearing cover
x Oil Pump vs. Enhanced Centrifugal Lubrication
o Power consumption is approximately 0.5% less with the enhanced
centrifugal system
o Oil carry-over rate is lower with the enhanced centrifugal system
x Cast in Muffler
o Reduces discharge gas pulsations without external muffler or bulky
cylinder heads
o Pulsation reduction

Features and Benefits

x Piston Rings
o 4 & 6 cylinder models have two rings, a chrome plated compression ring
and an oil ring
o Chrome plated rings provide excellent running durability under boundary
lubrication conditions
o Piston rings are sealed by gas pressure balancing the ring tension to the
proper value
o Provides excellent sealing under various pressure and speed conditions
x Cylinder Design
o Crosshatch honing i.e. "Plateau honing" o Cross-hatching allows for higher tolerance operation with marginal
lubrication
o Cross-hatching grooves help resist wear by retaining oil in the cylinder,
and therefore increases compressor life
x Valves Plates
o Spring steel reed valves o Valve reeds are matched to compressor design to optimize performance
and efficiency
o Flow passages optimized for minimal pressure drop o High volumetric efficiencies due to minimal re-expansion volume
