- 2 -
1. Begin installation by removing the factory mounted spare tire.
2. Remove 3rd brake light wiring cover and unplug both 3rd brake light wires (see photos 1 & 2 below).
Remove tailgate wiring grommet and carefully unthread wires through tailgate (one at a time). Remove
3rd brake light assembly from spare tire mount.
3. Remove spare tire mounting bracket from tailgate using 13mm end wrench or socket.
4. Remove the two plastic bumper surrounds from the ends of the bumper using a #30 Torx wrench.
Depending on the year of Wrangler, there are 4 or 5 screws holding each surround. Save these screws,
as they will be used later (see photo #3). Later in the installation process, you will reinstall the factory
bumper surrounds or, you may choose to use the included Bumper End Plugs.
5. Remove the factory bumper using an 18mm end wrench or socket. There are 2 stud bolts on each end of
the bumper and 2 hex bolts underneath along the bottom of the bumper holding it in place (see photo
#4).
6. Using a jack or jack stand to support the fuel tank, remove the four (4) nuts supporting fuel tank from
the rear cross member using a 13mm end wrench or socket. Lower the tank far enough down to allow
access to the inside of the rear channel cross member to install nut plates. Do not remove the tank strap
bolts (see photo #5). Save nuts as they will be reinstalled later.
7. Install the striker plate/pin assembly to the “new” bumper with three (3) _” x 1_” hex bolts and flat
washers. The bolts will pass through the striker plate and bumper, threading into the nut plate, which
must be slid into position inside of bumper. Note that the striker pin should be positioned so that it will
be above the bumper when bumper is installed (see photo 6). Do not tighten striker plate yet as you will
need to adjust its position later.
8. Steps 9-11 detail bumper installation, which will require 2 adults. The “new” bumper will be installed at
factory bumper mounting locations. At this time you must decide between reusing the factory bumper
surrounds or the included Bumper End Plugs. If you will be reinstalling the factory bumper surrounds,
the included bumper surround tabs must be installed under the 7/16” bolt and flat washers used in step
9. Photo 12 below shows the bumper surround tab installed. Note that there is a “left” and “right”
surround.
9. With hinge bushing positioned to the passenger side of vehicle, loosely mount new bumper at locations
where factory studs were previously attached. Use four (4) 7/16” hex bolts, eight (8) 7/16” flat washers
and four (4) 7/16” nylock nuts. Do not tighten at this time.
10. Reuse the two (2) factory fasteners to attach bumper to the bottom of frame.
11. Install two (2) remaining bumper attachment bolts using existing holes in rear cross member (see photo
#5). Thread _” X 1_” bolts & washers through bumper and cross member into nut plates positioned on
the backside of rear channel. Access the backside of rear channel cross member through the gap left by
lowering fuel tank. One person will need to position the nut plate and another person will need to start
the _” bolts and washers through existing holes.
12. Tighten all eight (8) bumper mounting bolts.
13. Insert swing arm hinge pin into bumper bushing. Install 3/8” fine thread hex bolt and 2” O.D. flat
washer in bottom of hinge pin and tighten.
14. Remove the bottommost horizontal rubber bumper (only bumper not on tailgate) from your vehicle with
T-30 Torx wrench (see photo 6). Place the provided _” plastic washer on the bolt you just removed and
install bolt and washer back in the hole it came from to seal hole.
