1. Begin installation by removing the factory mounted spare tire.
2. Remove 3rd brake light wiring cover and unplug both 3rd brake light wires (see photos 1 & 2 below). Remove tailgate wiring grommet and carefully unthread wires through tailgate (one at a time). Remove 3rd brake light assembly from spare tire mount.
3. Remove spare tire mounting bracket from tailgate using 13mm end wrench or socket.
4. Remove the two plastic bumper surrounds from the ends of the bumper using a #30 Torx wrench. Depending on the year of Wrangler, there are 4 or 5 screws holding each surround. Save these screws, as they will be used later (see photo #3). Later in the installation process, you will reinstall the factory bumper surrounds or, you may choose to use the included Bumper End Plugs.
5. Remove the factory bumper using an 18mm end wrench or socket. There are 2 stud bolts on each end of the bumper and 2 hex bolts underneath along the bottom of the bumper holding it in place (see photo #4).
6. Using a jack or jack stand to support the fuel tank, remove the four (4) nuts supporting fuel tank from the rear cross member using a 13mm end wrench or socket. Lower the tank far enough down to allow access to the inside of the rear channel cross member to install nut plates. Do not remove the tank strap bolts (see photo #5). Save nuts as they will be reinstalled later.
7. Install the striker plate/pin assembly to the “new” bumper with three (3) _” x 1_” hex bolts and flat washers. The bolts will pass through the striker plate and bumper, threading into the nut plate, which must be slid into position inside of bumper. Note that the striker pin should be positioned so that it will be above the bumper when bumper is installed (see photo 6). Do not tighten striker plate yet as you will need to adjust its position later.
8. Steps 9-11 detail bumper installation, which will require 2 adults. The “new” bumper will be installed at factory bumper mounting locations. At this time you must decide between reusing the factory bumper surrounds or the included Bumper End Plugs. If you will be reinstalling the factory bumper surrounds, the included bumper surround tabs must be installed under the 7/16” bolt and flat washers used in step
9. Photo 12 below shows the bumper surround tab installed. Note that there is a “left” and “right” surround.
9. With hinge bushing positioned to the passenger side of vehicle, loosely mount new bumper at locations where factory studs were previously attached. Use four (4) 7/16” hex bolts, eight (8) 7/16” flat washers and four (4) 7/16” nylock nuts. Do not tighten at this time.
10. Reuse the two (2) factory fasteners to attach bumper to the bottom of frame.
11. Install two (2) remaining bumper attachment bolts using existing holes in rear cross member (see photo #5). Thread _” X 1_” bolts & washers through bumper and cross member into nut plates positioned on the backside of rear channel. Access the backside of rear channel cross member through the gap left by lowering fuel tank. One person will need to position the nut plate and another person will need to start the _” bolts and washers through existing holes.
12. Tighten all eight (8) bumper mounting bolts.
13. Insert swing arm hinge pin into bumper bushing. Install 3/8” fine thread hex bolt and 2” O.D. flat washer in bottom of hinge pin and tighten.
14. Remove the bottommost horizontal rubber bumper (only bumper not on tailgate) from your vehicle with T-30 Torx wrench (see photo 6). Place the provided _” plastic washer on the bolt you just removed and install bolt and washer back in the hole it came from to seal hole.
Your Husky Liners Jeep Wrangler Tire Carrier with receiver hitch bumper has been tested and rated Class II (trailer GVWR 3500 lbs. maximum and trailer tongue weight 350 lbs. maximum). Your actual vehicle tow capacity may be less. SEE YOUR
VEHICLE OWNERS MANUAL FOR SPECIFIC TOWING INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR VEHICLE. NEVER EXCEED THE MANUFACTURES TOW LIMITS FOR YOUR JEEP WRANGLER.

15. Using provided _” X _” Allen bolt, mount the rubber bumper (removed in Step 14) to the inside swing arm upright (see photo 6).
16. The tire mounting assembly can be mounted in 4 different positions, depending on individual preference and/or needs. Mounting with angle projecting upwards provides better departure ground clearance for larger tires. Mounting with angle projection downwards works best for smaller tires and/or better rearward vision. The mounting assembly can also be mounted with attachment plate on inside of swing arm uprights which moves the spare closer to the vehicle, or it can be mounted on the outside of the swing arm uprights which will provide more clearance for a wider tire or a wheel with a different offset (see photos 7 & 8). Whichever mounting position is chosen, the washer plates go on the opposite side of the upright as the mounting plate does. Install attaching bolts positioned with heads of bolts towards vehicle (threaded ends outward). If you will be mounting a Hi-Lift® or similar jack on your tire carrier, you will need to install the jack support upright in place of one of the washer plates. The included jack support upright mounts to the driver’s side swing arm upright, situated so it is angling upwards (see photo 9). Note: It is important to have spare tire mounted before completing the next steps.
17. If you will not be mounting a Hi-Lift® type jack on your Wrangler Tire Carrier, please skip to instruction step #18. If you will be mounting a Hi-Lift® type jack, thread the provided 3/8” X 2_” fully threaded bolt into the tapped hole in the jack support upright. Install bolt so threads project over bumper. Tighten bolt securely, then slide the 1” long round aluminum spacer (provided) onto this bolt. Secure jack to carrier by positioning jack foot (jack handle will be towards the swing arm upright) over the upward projecting mounting bolt on the swing arm. Maneuver jack over bolt just installed in jack support and secure by installing 3/8” flat washer, then hand knob. Place _” long round aluminum spacer over bolt passing through jack foot. Secure jack foot with 3/8” washer and hand knob (see photo 10 below).
18. With spare mounted, slowly bring the swing arm toward the closed position. Loosen the three (3) striker plate bolts to allow striker pin movement and adjust the striker pin to be centered in the swing arm grommet. Snug striker plate bolts lightly and fully open and close the swing arm several times. Recheck striker pin alignment. Adjust if needed, then fully tighten the 3 striker plate bolts.
19. If you have chosen to reinstall factory bumper surrounds, you will need to cut the bumper surrounds to fit inside of bumper. Cut 2-5/8” from the rear upright wall forward and from the inside end to within 1/16” of the textured surface (see photo 13). A hack saw or band work nicely for cutting. As always, use care when using cutting tools. Install modified bumper surrounds using factory Torx screws and T-30 Torx wrench. If you have decided to use the provided Bumper End Plugs, install these using the provided u-clips and #10 X _” washer head screws (see photo 11). To help with u-clip alignment, we recommend first installing the Bumper End Plugs and marking the mounting hole locations with a scratch awl or similar tool (one of the mounting screws will work). Then, remove the plug and position u-clips over marked locations. Reinstall the plugs and insert the screws removed in step #4.
20. Install the rear 3rd brake light mount using the factory bolts. Mount bolts into the top holes where the original spare tire mount was located. Install the bottom bolts with the provided 5/16” plastic washers to seal holes.
21. Install the factory 3rd brake light on the 3rd brake light mount using the 5/16” hex bolts, fender washers and nylock nuts, provided.
22. Thread 3rd brake light wires back through tailgate/tailgate grommet and plug back into contacts. Replace 3rd brake light wiring cover (see photos 1 & 2). Reseat grommet in tailgate.
23. With tailgate closed, check 3rd brake light for operation
24. Lift fuel tank back into place and replace/tighten nuts.
25. Check tightness of all fasteners. We recommend periodically checking tightness of fasteners depending on severity of use.
