Conventions used in this guide
In this user guide, we use the following symbols to indicate useful and important information:
This is a note. A note often gives additional information, such as what happens when you choose to do or not to do a certain action. A note also provides information that may only be applicable to some situations.
This is a tip. A tip gives you an alternative way to do a particular step or procedure, or lets you know of an option that you may find helpful.
This indicates important information that you need in order to accomplish a certain task or to get a feature to work properly.
This provides safety precaution information, that is, information that you need to be careful about to prevent potential problems.

If you want to use a screen protector, please don’t cover and block the proximity sensor. Purchase a screen protector designed for HTC Desire 501.

Back cover

Removing the back cover

1. Securely hold HTC Desire 501.
2. Press on the center of the back cover, and then lift the cover open from the
bottom corner.

Replacing the back cover

1. Align the back cover onto the top part of HTC Desire 501.
2. Press the sides and the bottom part of the back cover against HTC Desire 501 to
lock the cover into place.
You will hear a click when the back cover is locked in place.

Dual micro SIM cards

HTC Desire 501 has two micro SIM slots.
Slot 1 supports WCDMA and GSM. Slot 2 supports GSM.

Inserting the SIM cards

Use a standard micro SIM only. Inserting a smaller size SIM (such as a nano SIM with an adapter or a modified SIM) may cause the card to not fit properly or damage the card slot.
1. Take the back cover off.
2. Insert a SIM card into either SIM slot as shown. If you have another SIM card,
insert it into the other slot.
When inserting, make sure the gold contacts on the SIM card are facing down.

Removing the SIM cards

Make sure to switch off HTC Desire 501 before removing your SIM cards.
1. Take the back cover off.
2. Push a SIM card in to eject it from its slot.
3. Slide the SIM card out with your thumb or finger.

Storage card

Use a storage card to store your photos, videos, and music.

Inserting the storage card

1. Take the back cover off.
2. Insert the microSD™ card into the storage card slot with its gold contacts facing
down and push it into place.

Unmounting the storage card

When you need to remove the storage card while HTC Desire 501 is on, unmount the storage card first to prevent corrupting or damaging the files in the storage card.
1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap .
2. Tap Storage > Unmount SD card.

2. With your thumb or finger, lift the battery from the battery compartment.

Inserting the battery

Please use only original batteries that came in the box or replacements that we recommend.
1. Take the back cover off.
2. Insert the battery (with its exposed copper contacts first) into the battery
compartment.

Charging the battery

Before you turn on and start using HTC Desire 501, it is recommended that you charge the battery.
§ Use only the adapter and the USB cable that came with HTC Desire 501 to charge the battery.
§ Do not remove the battery from HTC Desire 501 while you are charging it using the power or car adapter.
1. Insert the small end of the USB cable into the USB connector.
2. Insert the other end of the USB cable into the power adapter.
3. Plug in the power adapter to an electrical outlet to start charging the battery.
As a safety precaution, the battery stops charging if it overheats.

Switching the power on

Press the POWER button.
When you turn on HTC Desire 501 for the first time, you’ll need to set it up.

Switching the power off

1. If the display is off, press the POWER button to turn it back on. If you've set up
a lock screen, you need to unlock it.
2. Press and hold the POWER button for a few seconds.
3. Tap Power off on the options menu.

After your phone starts, you'll see a transparent overlay of Quick Tips on some screens (such as the Home screen) that will guide you in using HTC Desire 501. The tips for a screen won't display again after you've closed them.
To view the Quick Tips again, slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap >
About > Help > Show all quick tips.

Setting up your phone

Setting up HTC Desire 501 for the first time

When you switch on HTC Desire 501 for the first time, you’ll be asked to set it up.
§ Walk through the on-device setup to choose your Internet connection, turn location services on or off, and more.
§ Use our HTC Get Started service to set up your accounts and personalize HTC Desire 501 from your computer.
The on-device setup shows you the URL of our Get Started site.
When personalizing HTC Desire 501, you can choose the wallpaper, sounds, apps, home screen layouts, and more. Or just choose a Quick Style that already has all these items preselected for you. You need an HTC Account to save your HTC Get Started setup and to download your settings to HTC Desire 501.

Some features that need to connect to the Internet such as location-based services and auto-sync of your online accounts may incur extra data fees. Don’t worry. You can enable or disable them in Settings later on.

Home screen

Your Home screen is where you make HTC Desire 501 your own. You can add your favorite applications, shortcuts, folders and widgets so they’re always just a tap away. To find out how, see Personalizing on page 44.

Extended Home screen

As you start to do more things with HTC Desire 501, you might find that one Home screen is not enough. No problem.
Swipe your finger left or right on the screen and you’ll discover more space for adding icons, widgets, and more.
Press to return to the main Home screen.

Using Leap view

§ To jump straight to the screen that you want, press or slide two fingers together to show the Leap view. It reveals all Home screens as thumbnails. Just tap the one you want and you’ll leap right there.
§ In Leap view, if there's space to add a new screen, you can tap Add Panel to do so. An empty Home screen appears and you can start customizing from there.

Getting contacts into HTC Desire 501

There are several ways you can add contacts to HTC Desire 501.
Sync with your computer
Gmail
Social network accounts
Phone contacts You can create and store contacts directly in HTC Desire 501. SIM card Copy all your SIM contacts to HTC Desire 501. Microsoft

Transfer Use the Transfer app to transfer contacts and other data from

Sync the contacts from your old phone to your computer, and then use HTC Sync Manager to sync HTC Desire 501 with your computer's Microsoft® Outlook®, Outlook Express or Windows Contacts.
Google® contacts are imported to HTC Desire 501 after you sign in to your Google Account. You can also create more Google contacts right from HTC Desire 501.
Log in to your favorite social networks to import contact information from them.
HTC Desire 501 syncs your work contacts from the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Server in your workplace.

Transferring contacts from your old phone through Bluetooth

Depending on the capabilities of your old phone, the Transfer app may be able to transfer not only contacts but also other data such as calendar events and text messages to HTC Desire 501.
1. From the Home screen, tap > Transfer.
2. Tap Next to begin.
3. Choose your old phone's name and model.
4. On your old phone, turn Bluetooth on and set it to discoverable mode.
5. Follow the onscreen instructions on your old phone and HTC Desire 501 to pair
them.
6. Choose the types of data to transfer:
§ If you selected Contacts and Calendar, you can choose whether to transfer
them to the phone or to an account you're signed into (such as Exchange ActiveSync).
§ If you're transferring data from the HTC One series (or newer phones), you
can also select SMS, Bookmark, and Task. These data types can only be transferred locally to HTC Desire 501.
7. Wait for the data transfer to finish.

Getting photos, videos, and music on or off HTC Desire 501

There are two ways you can transfer your media.
§ Connect HTC Desire 501 to your computer. Your computer will recognize it just like any removable USB drive, and you can copy your media between them.
§ Download and use our HTC Sync Manager software. You can easily set it up to sync folders containing media and playlists on your computer with HTC Desire 501. HTC Sync Manager can also automatically get photos and videos off HTC Desire 501 to your computer. For details, see HTC Sync Manager on page 103.
Tired of transferring your media every time you change to a new phone? Use online storage services to put your media in one place so you can access them anywhere — on your computer, HTC Desire 501, and other mobile devices.
Check first what online storage accounts are available on HTC Desire 501 and sign in to the one you want to use. To sign in to an account, slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap > Accounts & sync > . Use the Gallery app to access media in your online storage.

Getting to know your settings

Want to change the ringtone or set up a WiFi® connection? Do this and more in Settings.
Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap . Here are some of the basic settings you can change:
§ Tap the On/Off switch next to an item such as Wi-Fi to turn it on or off. Tap the
item itself to configure its settings.
§ Tap Sound to set a ringtone, choose a sound profile, and configure incoming call
sound settings.
§ Tap Personalize to change the wallpaper or apply a scene to HTC Desire 501.
§ Tap Security to help secure HTC Desire 501, for example with a screen lock.

Updating the HTC Desire 501 software

HTC Desire 501 can check and notify you if there’s a new update available. You can also manually check if there's an available update.
You might want to use WiFi or your computer's Internet connection to download software updates to save on data usage. You can set this option in Settings >
About > Software updates > .

Installing a software update

When the Internet connection is on and there's a new software update available, the update notification icon appears in the status bar.
1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap the system update notification.
2. If you don't want to download the update using your data connection, select Use Wi-Fi or cable only.
3. Tap Download.
4. When download is complete, select Install now, and then tap OK.
Wait for the update to finish. HTC Desire 501 restarts automatically.

Installing an application update

When the Internet connection is on and there's an available update for one of your apps, the update notification icon appears in the status bar.
1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap the update notification.
The Updates screen opens with the list of application updates to be installed.
2. Tap an item to view its details, and then tap .
3. When you're done reviewing the updates, tap Install. You'll be asked to restart
HTC Desire 501 if needed.

Checking for updates manually

1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap .
2. Tap About > Software updates > Check now.

Capture every moment as it happens
§ Activate Camera instantly. Launch it from the lock screen and take your shots with no delay.
And when Camera goes into sleep mode, just press POWER to use it right away.
§ With VideoPic, you can snap a picture while you're shooting video. See Taking a
photo while recording a video on page 40.
You can also capture a photo from a previously recorded video. See Taking a
photo while watching a video on page 81.
§ Use Continuous shooting mode to capture 20 consecutive shots or more. See

§ By just tapping the screen (or shutter button), take three shots of your subject at different exposures and combine them into a nice, evenly exposed photo. See

Quick, easy set-up
With our HTC Get Started service, you can set up and personalize HTC Desire 501 from your computer, and just download your settings to HTC Desire 501. See Setting
up HTC Desire 501 for the first time on page 18.
Dropbox integration with HTC Sense
Always have access to your photos, videos, and documents anywhere by storing them in Dropbox. When you sign in to your Dropbox account from HTC Desire 501, you can even get an additional 23 GB of free Dropbox storage for two years. To find out how, see Using Dropbox on HTC Desire 501 on page 137.
The 23 GB offer is available only if Dropbox is preloaded. If it's not preloaded, you can download it from Google Play and still enjoy Dropbox integration with apps such as Gallery and Mail.
HTC Car
With the HTC Car app, keep yourself entertained while finding your way on the road. You can use turn-by-turn navigation, browse maps, take calls, and listen to music or Internet radio. To find out more, see HTC Car on page 144.
Rich and seamless browsing experience
Enjoy HTML5 content on the go. And no more panning left and right. The web browser's text reflow automatically adjusts text to the width of your screen. To find out more about using the web browser, see Browsing the Web on page 74.
You can also keep a copy of what you're browsing so you can read it later even without an Internet connection. See Saving web content for later on page 77.
Smart dial
The phone dialer’s Smart dial feature makes it quick and easy for you to place a call. Just enter the phone number or first few letters of the contact name. See Making a
call with Smart dial on page 54.

Touch gestures

Use touch gestures to get around the Home screen, open apps, scroll through lists, and more.
Tap
Tap the screen with your finger when you want to select onscreen items such as application and settings icons, or press onscreen buttons.
Press and hold
Swipe or slide
To open the available options for an item (for example, a contact or link in a webpage), just press and hold the item.
Quickly swipe your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen to go to other Home pages, scroll through documents, and more.

Drag
Press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start to drag. While dragging, don't release your finger until you have reached the target position.
Flick
Flicking the screen is similar to swiping, except that you need to swipe your finger in light, quicker strokes, such as when moving right and left on the Home screen, or flicking through a contacts or message list.
Press and flick
On the Home screen, you can easily move a widget or icon from one screen to another.
Press and hold the widget or icon with one finger, and flick the screen to the new location with another finger.

Slide with two fingers
Slide two fingers together to zoom out of the picture or text.
In some apps, like Gallery, Messages, Mail, or the web browser, slide two fingers apart to zoom in when viewing a picture or text.
Two-finger swipe
In some apps that have sorting, like Mail or People, swipe up or down using two fingers to scroll the screen. The screen displays the sorting order, and you can easily scroll to the information you want.

Three-finger swipe
Swipe up using three fingers to share content such as photos, videos, and music from HTC Desire 501 to your TV or speakers.
§ HTC gestures is enabled by default, which makes the three-finger gesture work
only when sharing content or using HTC apps.
§ You need to hook up the HTC Media Link HD (sold separately) to your HDMI TV to share content.

Motion gestures

Use motion gestures to mute HTC Desire 501, turn on the speakerphone, and more.
Flip to silence / flip for speakerphone
When a call comes in you can turn HTC Desire 501 over to mute it.

Pick up to lower volume
While in a call, turn HTC Desire 501 over to turn the speakerphone on for hands-free conversations or for conference calling.
In a business meeting or restaurant, pick HTC Desire 501 up when a call comes in to lower the ringtone volume.
Set volume to automatically rise while in your pocket or bag
On a noisy street and can't hear HTC Desire 501 ringing in your bag?
You can set HTC Desire 501 to recognize when it's in your bag or pocket and raise the ringtone volume so that you can hear it in noisy environments.

Rotate HTC Desire 501 for a better view
For many screens, you can automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning HTC Desire 501 sideways.
When entering text, you can turn HTC Desire 501 sideways to bring up a bigger keyboard.

Sleep mode

Sleep mode saves battery power by putting HTC Desire 501 into a low power state while the display is off. It also stops accidental button presses when HTC Desire 501 is in your bag.

Switching to Sleep mode

Briefly press the POWER button to turn off the display and switch to Sleep mode. HTC Desire 501 also automatically goes into Sleep mode when it’s left idle for a while.
You can change the time before HTC Desire 501 sleeps in the Display, gestures &
buttons (or Display & buttons) settings.

Waking up from Sleep mode

To wake HTC Desire 501 up manually, press the POWER button. If you've set up a lock screen, you need to unlock it.
HTC Desire 501 automatically wakes up when you have an incoming call.
