EQUIPMENT CARE
Never push the equipment beyond its design limits. If
it will not do what you want assume you have the wrong
type or size of cable for the job. Ask at your local HSS Hire
Weld Depot for advice.
Keep the equipment clean. You will find this less of a
chore if you clean it up regularly rather than wait until the
end of the hire period.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves and unauthorised users.
FINISHING OFF
Switch off any equipment being powered then
switch OFF the power supply. Disconnect all cables
and coil them up neatly ready for return to your local
HSS Hire Weld Depot.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
The HSS Extension Cables are designed to be used
with either a 415V, 5 pin 3-phase power supply or a
240V single phase power supply.
In addition, both types may be connected to a suitable
generated supply or to a main power supply.
If the equipment fails, or if its cable, socket or plug
becomes damaged, return it. Never try to repair it
yourself.
Keep cables out of harm’s way, and clear of the work
area.
Cables must always be fully unwound and loosely
coiled, away from the equipment. Never run them
through water, over sharp edges or where they could trip
someone.
Keep the equipment dry, using electrical equipment
in very damp or wet conditions can be dangerous.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, always use a
suitable RCD (Residual Current-Operated Device)
available from your local HSS Hire Weld Depot. Or power
the equipment from a mains circuit with a built in RCD.
Ensure that all equipment powered by the extension
cable is switched OFF before plugging the extension
cable into the power supply.
GETTING STARTED
Take the Extension Cable to the work area, site in a
place where it will be away from pedestrian traffic.
Loosely uncoil the cable and place on the floor.
Fully uncoil additional extension cables and/or
power cables from any equipment to be powered
by the extension cable. Always ensure that cables do
not present a trip hazard.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
Three Phase…
Code input (max) cable size cable type
40994 16amp 2.5mm
40985 32amp 6mm
40986 63amp 16mm
40989 125amp 35mm
There are four cable and plug sizes available with the
range of three phase cables. It is extremely important
that the plug rating is not exceeded (see chart), for
further advice, contact your local HSS Hire Weld Depot.
All HSS 3-phase cables are fitted with water
resistant plugs and trailing sockets, some of which
use a locking collar to hold the plug and socket securely
together.
To make a connection, align the plugs guide nipple
with the sockets slot and fully insert the plug.
Where fitted, turn the lock collar clockwise to lock
the plug to the socket.
Single Phase...
Code input (max) cable size cable type

40978 32amp 4mm
There are two cable and plug sizes available. It is

Socket
The HSS single phase cables have the trailing socket
fitted with a spring loaded cover which engages with a
catch on the plugs body. This is the most common type used.
To make a connection, raise the sockets cover, align
the plugs nipple with the sockets slot. Fully insert
the plug then lower the cover so that it engages
behind the plugs catch.
Whichever you are using…
All cables supplied by HSS use HO7 RN-F flexible
rubber cable and this must be taken into
consideration when performing your risk assesment.
If using an RCD adaptor, make sure that it is
positioned between the power supply and the
extension cable.
Having made sure that the power supply is switched OFF,
plug the cable into the power supply socket.
Having made sure that any equipment being supplied by
the cable is switched OFF, plug the equipment into the
cable’s trailing socket.
You can now switch the supply ON and proceed to
operate the equipment.
