The HP StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drive and HP DAT 72 data cartridge address the backup needs of an exceptionally wide range of organizations and networks. As a DDS compliant drive with backwards read and write compatibility, the new product provides customers with real value with the balance of cost, capacity and performance that they need in backing up their servers and workstations. With broad server hardware, backup software and operating system connectivity it is second to none in ensuring the customer has no need to worry about their data.
HP ensures the highest level of quality with media specifications that far exceed industry standards. HP has 20 custom-built testing chambers that are in use 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. It is doubtful if any other media supplier carries out such exhaustive qualification of the drive and media as they are used in the field. This is because no media supplier is exposed to the support of hardware in the field and has a vested interest in reducing media-induced hardware issues. In 2002, 170,000 different media tests were performed, accounting for 1.3 million test hours. HP performs layers of testing that far exceed industry standards. For example, drop testing, where the cartridge is dropped from a height of 0.75m onto a hard surface – a daily risk in a busy computer room. HP also conducts tests on multiple batches of media using multiple drives to ensure performance in different environmental conditions, such as variations of high/low temperature and humidity. Changes in external conditions, which can easily occur when media is moved from different locations, can have a huge impact on error rate performance. Increased error rates jeopardizes backup, and backup disruption jeopardizes business continuity. HP customers are many and varied; this is why HP specifies stringent durability and reliability metrics that the media must satisfy before it is good enough to bear the HP logo. Having achieved the required standard, HP continuously tests and monitors the quality of every batch of media that is destined to bear the HP logo.
