This guide is designed for system administrators who use the HP ProLiant Server Management Packs for
Microsoft® Systems Center Operations Manager 2007 (Operations Manager), Insight Management
Agents, Insight Management WBEM Providers and other HP applications and tools to manage the
operations of HP ProLiant servers within an Operations Manager 2007 environment.
You should be familiar with the configuration and operation of Microsoft® Windows®, Microsoft®
Systems Center Operations Manager 2007, HP Insight Management WBEM Providers and the HP Insight
Management Agents. Because of the potential risk of data loss, only individuals who are experienced
with using this software should implement the procedures described in this guide.
Introduction
HP delivers management packs that complement and extend Operations Manager 2007, integrating alert
processing, state monitoring, and hardware resource lifecycle management for HP ProLiant servers.
Designed specifically for Operations Manager 2007, the HP ProLiant Server Management Packs provide
predefined discoveries, views, monitors, event processing rules, and tasks which enable administrators to
proactively streamline IT operations and ensure increased systems availability by monitoring Microsoft®
Windows® environments and HP ProLiant server hardware platforms through a common Operations
Manager console.
The HP ProLiant Server Management Packs for Operations Manager 2007 automatically discover and
group HP ProLiant servers by hardware platform type. Default discoveries and monitors highlight the state
of HP hardware and management software components and present a consolidated view of system status.
The HP ProLiant Server Management Packs support two sources of instrumentation:
• Predefined event processing rules build on the functionality of the HP Insight Management Agents to
display Windows® Event Log entries for HP ProLiant server hardware as alerts in the Operations
Manager 2007 Console, including real-time and prefailure event definitions.
• Predefined event processing rules build on the functionality of the HP Insight Management WBEM
Providers to display Windows® Event Log entries for HP ProLiant server hardware as alerts in the
Operations Manager 2007 Console, including real-time and prefailure event definitions.
For advanced hardware lifecycle management and remote administration of HP ProLiant servers, the HP
ProLiant Server Management Packs for Operations Manager include tasks that launch HP Systems Insight
Manager for group systems administration, the HP System Management Homepage for single system
health and configuration monitoring, and advanced remote server administration through the HP
Integrated Lights-Out Management Processor when installed.

CAUTION: HP strongly discourages the use of the HP Management Packs (IMP) for MOM
2000 or MOM 2005 Management Packs in an Operations Manager 2007 environment. The
new HP Server Management Packs for ProLiant servers take advantage of the redesigned
architecture and new features provided with Operations Manager 2007. Installing the HP
Management Packs for MOM 2000 or MOM 2005 Management Packs in an Operations
Manager 2007 environment might lead to duplicate event entries and groups.
Product architecture
The HP ProLiant Server Management Packs for Operations Manager 2007 integration is designed to
perform the following major functions:
• Automatically identify, group, and display HP ProLiant servers within the Operations Manager 2007
Console
• Populate Operations Manager with server attributes and configuration data for HP ProLiant
hardware and software components
• Monitor and display the state of HP ProLiant server hardware and the associated management
services
• Proactively identify, translate, and display HP ProLiant hardware events written to the Windows®
Event Log as Operations Manager alerts or the installed version of the HP Insight Management
Agents or HP Insight Management WBEM Providers
• Provide browser-based links to HP management tools for hardware resource management and
advanced remote administration from within Operations Manager 2007

HP ProLiant Server Management Packs elements
The following identifies some of the major elements of the HP ProLiant Server Management Packs for
Operations Manager 2007 and the underlying elements used to collect data and process hardware
events and state changes. The management packs support two sources of instrumentation: HP Insight
Management Agents and HP Insight Management WBEM Providers:
For HP Insight Management Agents:
• The HP ProLiant server discovery rules and scripts use HP Insight Management Agents, system BIOS
data, and information from WMI to identify HP ProLiant servers and collate individual system
configuration attributes.
• HP ProLiant server state monitoring rules use data from HP Insight Management Agents MIB files to
monitor the condition of HP ProLiant server hardware and to populate the State views in the
Operations Manager 2007 Console. HP ProLiant server state monitoring rules also monitor the
availability of key HP ProLiant management software and services, such as HP Insight Management
Agents.
• The HP ProLiant server event processing rules rely on HP Insight Management Agents and data
written to the Windows® Event Log to identify and process HP ProLiant hardware events.
When an HP Insight Management Agent generates an event, a corresponding entry is written to the
Windows® Event log, which is the primary event data source used by Operations Manager 2007. If
the HP event in the Windows® Event Log has an associated event processing rule defined by an HP
ProLiant Server Management Pack, an Operations Manager alert is generated and written to the
appropriate view in the Operations Manager Console.
HP alerts in Operations Manager include clear event details and knowledge-based data designed to
enable rapid analysis of real-time and prefailure conditions. Certain hardware events reported to the
Windows® Event Log can also generate additional events that indicate a change in hardware state.
For HP Insight Management WBEM Providers:
• The HP ProLiant server discovery rules and scripts use HP Insight Management WBEM Providers,
system BIOS data, and information from WMI to identify HP ProLiant servers and collate individual
system configuration attributes.
• HP ProLiant server state monitoring rules use data from HP Insight Management WBEM Providers to
monitor the condition of HP ProLiant server hardware and to populate the State views in the
Operations Manager 2007 Console. HP ProLiant server state monitoring rules also monitor the
availability of key HP ProLiant management software and services, such as HP Insight Management
WBEM Providers.
The HP ProLiant server event processing rules rely on HP Insight Management WBEM Providers •and
data written to the Windows® Event Log to identify and process HP ProLiant hardware events.
•
When an HP Insight Management WBEM Provider generates an event, a corresponding entry is
written to the Windows® Event log, which is the primary event data source used by Operations
Manager 2007. If the HP event in the Windows® Event Log has an associated event processing rule

WMI management and planning
HP Insight Management WBEM Providers enables WMI-based server management to ProLiant servers.
The providers offer server management instrumentation through WMI protocol while HP Insight
Management Agents provide it through SNMP protocol. HP continues to improve the providers to match
the same and more capability than the agents. For more information, see the
WBEM Provider (2.1 or higher) User Guide.
HP ProLiant Server WMI Management Pack is designed to bring WMI management capability easily and
seamlessly. The user imports the WMI management pack and installs the providers, and then WMI
management starts automatically without any customization. HP does not recommend installing both the
providers and the agents on a server because it causes instrumentation redundancy and the use of system
resource. If the user selects to install both the providers and the agents, HP ProLiant Server management
pack selects the agents as default. For more information, see

Overriding HP ProLiant server management
HP Insight Management
The following are key features of the HP ProLiant Server WMI Management Pack:
• The View in Operation Manager Console is shared with base management pack. No new view is
added.
• Class data structure is based on the original server management pack, and operation and process is
the same with released management pack.
• WMI management can be force-enabled by using the override setting if a server has both the HP
Insight Management WBEM Providers and the HP Insight Management Agents installed but want to
use WMI management.
• HP ProLiant Server WMI Management Pack is part of the current HP ProLiant Server Management
Pack. The installer is updated to add import selection menu to enable WMI Management.
