Overview
The HP Advanced Services zl Module with Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 R2 (J9666A) is a zl switch module with integrated Windows Server 2008 R2, Standard Edition, software. The module has a 250GB hard disk drive (HDD) and 4GB of DDR3 memory. The server software on the HDD is prelicensed. You install the Advanced Services Module with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 in an HP E5400 zl or E8200 zl Series switch. The module automatically boots to the Windows Server 2008 R2 OS.
The software license allows you to run one instance of the server in the physical operating system environment (POSE) and one in a virtual operating system environment (VOSE). However, if you are running an instance in the VOSE, the instance in the POSE can do nothing but manage the instance in the VOSE. For more information on using virtualization with Windows Server 2008 R2, see the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/ windowserver2008.
1
Because the server is headless, you access it through a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connection. You can then manage the server just as you would a server that runs on traditional server hardware. You can also manage the module itself with an easy to use Command Line Interface (CLI) that is accessed through the CLI for the switch that houses the module.
Important HP zl switch software version K.14.65 or later is required. Version K.15.03 or
later is recommended because this version allows an E8200 zl switch with dual management modules to gracefully shut down and restart the module in case of a management module failover. Earlier software versions power down the module without the graceful shutdown. For more information, see Appendix
D.
For a description of the front panel buttons and LEDs, see Appendix D.

Installation Precautions
Static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the
module. When handling and installing the module, follow these procedures to avoid damage from static electricity:
Handle the module by its bulkhead or edges and avoid touching the components and the circuitry on the board.
When installing the module, equalize any static charge difference between your body and the switch by wearing a grounding wrist strap and attaching it to the switch’s metal body, or by frequently touching the switch’s metal body.
The module has “low-force,” high-performance connectors. High inser-
tion forces are not necessary to install the module, and should not be used.
Ensure the module is fully inserted. Press the module into the slot
until the bulkhead on the module contacts or is very close to contacting the front face of the switch chassis.
Once the module is fully inserted, screw in the two retaining screws to
secure the module in place.
For safe operation, proper switch cooling, and reduction of electromag-
netic emissions, ensure that a slot cover is installed on any unused module slot. For safety, no more than one slot should be uncovered at a time, even temporarily, when the switch is powered on.
Check the temperature specifications for the module; different modules
have different temperature requirements.
The module is hot-swappable; that is, the HP zl switch can be powered on or off when you install the module within it. The following procedure assumes the switch is powered on.
Caution Although the module is hot-swappable, you must reboot the HP zl switch
before installing the module in a slot that used to support a different type of module. Otherwise, the module will fail to boot.

Installation Procedure
1. Use a Torx T-10 or flat-bladed screwdriver to unscrew the screws in the cover plates over the slot where you will install the module. Store the cover plates for possible future use.
2. Hold the module by its bulkhead, taking care not to touch the metal connectors or components on the board.
3. Open the extractor handles.
4. Insert the module, aligning with the guides in the slots, and slide it into the slot until it is fully inserted.
5. Once the module is fully inserted, use the extractor handles to set it completely.
6. Tighten the screws.

Verifying That the Module Is Installed Correctly
If you have installed the module in a powered off HP zl switch, power up the switch. After the switch powers up, the module will begin to power up. If you have installed the module in a powered on switch, the module begins to power up immediately. The initial bootup takes several minutes. You can determine when this process is complete by viewing the Module Status LED, which becomes solid green when the module is ready.
Caution Do not remove the module or interrupt this process in any way.
Later, whenever you reboot or power on the module, it goes through a similar bootup and self test process. Again, the Module Status LED becomes solid green when the module is ready.

address, 192.168.2.9, and subnet mask, 255.255.255.252.
Username = SBMAdmin – Password = P@ssw0rd
Note Note that in the password, a has been replaced with @ and o has been replaced
with the digit 0.
You can connect to the module through the network.
a. Unless the module belongs in VLAN 1, you must set the correct VLAN
membership for the module’s internal port 2:
hostzlswitch(config)# vlan <ID> untagged <slot>2
b. You then have some options:
Your domain administrator might have created a fixed DHCP
reservation for the module’s MAC address. If you know what this address is, you can establish a remote desktop connection to it from any management station with network connectivity.
If you do not know the module’s IP address and do not have a
physical connection to it, you can connect to the module CLI through the HP zl switch CLI. Then you can see the IP address that the module has been assigned through DHCP, or you can assign the module a static IP address.
hostzlswitch(config)# services <slot> name hp-svcs-std hostzlswitch(config)# show ip
If you see a valid address, you can connect to it using RDP.

Troubleshooting
Quick Tips
Detailed troubleshooting information for the module is available in its Installation and Getting Started Guide at www.hp.com/networking/support.
Some basic tips include:
The module fails to boot.
Caution Be patient. The module takes several minutes to boot initially, and you must
not interrupt this process.
You might also check the switch’s software version. It must be K.14.65 or later. Also remember that, although the module is hot swappable, you must reboot the switch before installing the module in a slot that used to house a module of another type.
The module fails to receive a DHCP address, or you cannot access the
module at the static address that you set with the CLI.
Verify that the module’s internal port 2 is in the correct VLAN. Enter
vlan <ID> untagged <slot>2.
The switch reports the module as failed.
Installing applications that include WinPcap (such as Wireshark) can
cause this problem. To resolve the issue, refer to the troubleshooting chapter in the Installation and Getting Started Guide. This guide also explains the proper methods for installing such applications.
Disabling the module’s internal port 2 can also cause this problem.
In the HP zl switch CLI, enter interface <slot>2 and
enable.
If this command does not fix the problem, and you cannot access
neither the module CLI nor can you reach the server running on the module, you must access the module’s Special Administration Console (SAC) to fix the problem. Refer to the troubleshooting chapter in the Installation and Getting Started Guide.

Front Panel Buttons, LEDs, and Connectors
This section describes the different buttons, LEDs, and connectors on the front panel of a module:
Module Shutdown button—This button is used to shut down the
module. A message is written to the switch log to indicate the module has shut down. If the button is tapped briefly (for less than one second), a graceful shutdown takes place; in this case file integrity and data is protected. If the button is pressed and held (for three seconds or longer), a hard shutdown takes place.
Hardware Components

C
Caution A hard shutdown can introduce the risk of hard disk drive (HDD) file
corruption.
If policies on the server that runs on the module have disabled shutdown without login, you must press the button two or three times. Similarly, if the server’s power management or screen saver policies have been altered (which is not recommended, as described in the Installation and Getting Started Guide), you must push the button two or three times. In either case, press the button briefly each time for a graceful shutdown.
The module can also be shut down by using a CLI command.
Note also that the shutdown button can be enabled and disabled using a CLI command. See “Device Disable” on page D-4.
10/100/1000T Management Port—This port provides a direct connec-
tion to the SBM for management, typically in troubleshooting situations. Traffic is not routed through this port beyond the module. Its default IP address is 192.168.2.10/30.
USB Port—This port is used to attach a USB device, such as a flash drive.
The USB device is then available on the headless server.

Internal Ports
Internal Ports
The module receives traffic from and transmits traffic to its host switch on two internal Ethernet ports, each of which supports 10 Gbps. When a module is installed into the host switch, the switch automatically detects these internal ports and names them according to the slot in which the module is installed. For example, if the module is installed in slot A, the switch references the ports as A1 and A2.
When the Windows Server 2008 R2 that runs on the module boots up, these ports are assigned to Local Area Connection interfaces on the server. (The module’s management port is assigned to a third Local Area Connection interface). By default, the interface that is associated with the <slot>1 port is disabled, and the interface that is associated with the <slot>2 port is enabled.
Caution Do not disable the <slot>2 port. If you do, the communications between the
HP zl switch and the SBM will fail, causing first the module to fail and then the switch to report the SBM as a malfunctioning module.
Serial Numbers
Serial numbers are required when contacting HP or a reseller for warranty assistance or for coverage under a service agreement. For future reference, record the serial and product numbers in the warranty booklet.
The product ships as a bundle. From a warranty perspective, a bundle consists of the following separate hardware components:
module

Replacing or Removing a Module
Replacing or Removing a Module
It is highly recommended that the module be shutdown before replacing or removing it. The module maybe shutdown using the shutdown button on the front panel of the module or using the following CLI command:
hostswitch# services <slot-id> shutdown
It is possible to “hot-swap” one module for another of the same type; that is, replace one module with another while the switch is still powered on, without interrupting the operation of the rest of the switch ports. If the modules are not the same type, you must reboot the switch before installing the new module and the switch may have to be reconfigured.
Caution If you do not reboot the switch before installing the Advanced Services Module
in a slot that used to house a different type of module, the module will fail to boot.
Caution A 5-second delay is mandatory between removing a module, and either re-
installing it, or replacing it with another.
To replace one module with another, or to remove a module without replacing it, use the following procedure:
1. Unscrew the retaining screws enough to disconnect them from the threaded holes in the switch.
2. Using the extractor handles pull the module out from the slot.
3. Do one of the following:
If installing another module of the same type, go to “Installation
Procedure” on page 1-4 and begin with step 2. A switch reset is not
required. The current configuration in that slot will apply to the new module.
If another module will not be installed in the slot (that is, the slot will
be left empty), re-install the cover plate over the slot opening.

Updating Switch Software
The HP Advanced Services zl Module with Microsoft® Windows Server® requires switch software version K.14.65 or later to be installed in the switch. Version K.15.03 or greater is recommended if the module is installed in an HP E8200 zl switch with dual management modules. K.15.03 will gracefully shutdown and restart the module in the event of a management module failover. (Version K.14.65 will shut down the module, crashing the Windows OS.) When an update is needed, use the following steps to update the switch software:
Software Components
Updating Switch Software
D
1. Visit the HP Web portal at www.hp.com/networking to check the version number of the latest module-compatible software.
2. Check the version number of the software installed on the switch. Connect to the switch CLI and use the following command:
hostzlswitch# show version Image stamp: ...
<date, time> K.14.65 ... Boot Image: Secondary
3. If the switch software is out-of-date, update it:
hostzlswitch# copy tftp flash <source><source filename> secondary
hostzlswitch# startup-default secondary config <config filename>
hostzlswitch# boot system flash secondary
Note If a CLI command must be aborted, use either Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Z. The difference
between using the two is that Ctrl-Z, unlike Ctrl-C, does not provide any message indicating that the command was aborted.
There are some conditions when Ctrl-C may not work; in these cases, use Ctrl-Z.

Updating the Service OS
Updating the Service OS
There are two ways to update the Service OS:
via FTP: used when a local FTP server is accessible from the module
via USB: used when a local FTP server is not accessible from the module
Note The process of updating the Service OS is faster if the switch is accessed via
Telnet or SSH; the serial console slows down the writing of characters to the screen, causing a significantly slower installation speed, especially if the switch console is run at the default 9600 baud.
Updating Service OS via FTP
The module uses FTP to download its software. This requires that a local FTP server must be setup. The software update from HP is packaged as a “zip” file containing a top-level folder which needs to be extracted onto the FTP server so that the folder name is visible to download from the module CLI.
1. Check if the module has an IP address:
hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# show ip
2. If it doesn’t, get an IP address (the “ip address” and “ip default-gateway” commands also can be used to manually set an IP).
hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# ip dhcp
Verify there is an IP address.
hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# show ip
3. Download the updated Service OS.
hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# download ftp IP-ADDR IMAGE [user USER]
4. Check the images repository to verify that the updated Service OS was downloaded to the module:

hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# boot ServiceOS Changing boot from CF Service OS to Service OS.
System will be rebooted. Do you want to continue [y/n]? y Rebooting
7. Check the version of the updated Service OS and confirm it is running:
hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# show version
Updating Service OS via USB
Note Any image folder (Service or application) can be put on a USB flash drive and
transferred to the Service image repository.
1. Insert a USB flash drive into a Windows PC. Make sure the drive is FAT/ FAT32 formatted and can hold all files that will be downloaded.
2. Download the entire folder that contains the Service OS to the PC.
3. Copy the Service OS folder to the USB flash drive as a subdirectory under a /images folder.
4. Safely remove the USB flash drive from the Windows PC.
5. Insert the USB flash drive into the module. Wait for the module to recognize the USB flash drive (flash drive light should blink a couple of times).
6. Enter the Service OS CLI.
hostswitch# services c 1
7. Mount the USB flash drive.
hostswitch(svcs-mod-C:SvcOS)# usb mount
8. Copy the Service OS from the flash drive to the module.

10. Remove the USB flash drive from the module.
11. For the rest of the procedure, go to Step 4. on page D-2.
Device Disable
The module offers improved security and reliability. In case there is no physical security on the chassis, the USB and the shutdown button can be disabled to prevent unauthorized or undesired access. Both the USB and the shutdown button are enabled by default. The USB is disabled during boot.
Use the “device” command without an argument to show the devices enabled/ disabled.
