HP DeskJet 700/800 Series PrintersGeneral Refilling Policy
General Refilling Policy
To get the best performance from your printer, Hewlett-Packard
recommends using only genuine HP supplies in inkjet printers, including only
HP print and photo cartridges. Refilling HP print cartridges pushes electronic
and mechanical components past their normal life cycle, creating many
potential problems. Additionally...
Non-HP ink can cause:
print cartridge nozzles can become clogged resulting in streaked
copy or fuzzy characters.
print cartridge electrical components can become corroded resulting
in poor print quality and/or complete print cartridge failure.
Ink leaking from a refilled print cartridge may cause:
service station failure. The service station caps and cleans the print
cartridges between printouts. If the service station malfunctions,
irreversible damage to the print cartridges may result.
Caution
severe printer damage. If ink from a leaking print cartridge falls on
electrical components within the printer, severe damage to the
printer may result.
The ink in the print cartridges has been carefully formulated
by Hewlett-Packard to ensure superior print quality and
compatibility with the printer. Damage to the printer resulting
from modifying or refilling of HP print cartridges is not the
responsibility of Hewlett-Packard and is specifically excluded
from coverage of HP printer warranties.
Hewlett-Packard does not support the refilling of print
cartridges. Hewlett-Packard cannot guarantee the print quality
from refilled print cartridges.
Attempting to refill the highcapacity print cartridge may result in a sudden loss of ink from
the print cartridge
capacity black ink or color ink print cartridges is not covered
by the Hewlett-Packard warranty or customer service
agreements.

CautionThe C1823A and 51641A color cartridges are alike
physically. However, the C1823A is not backward compatible
with previous printers which use the 51641A such as the HP
DeskJet 850, 855, 820 and 870. An electrical lock-out has
been provided on the C1823A to prevent its being used in
place of the 51641A in these printers. Additionally, printers
designed to use the C1823A will not work with the 51641A.
If a user installs a C1823A in an older DeskJet 800 model,
the printer lights flash and the printer will not work.
Additionally, an on-screen message will inform the user that
something is wrong with the print cartridge.
Similarly, if the 51641A is installed in a printer designed for
the C1823A, again, the printer’s lights will flash and printer
will not work. Additionally, an on-screen message will inform
the user that something is wrong with the cartridge and ask
the user to install the HP C1823A color cartridge.

HP DeskJet 700/800 Series PrintersThermal Inkjet Technology
Thermal Inkjet Technology
The HP DeskJet printer family uses Thermal InkJet II (TIJ II) technology.
This technology centers on a disposable print cartridge. The basic principle
of TIJ II is to apply heat to a tiny measure of ink until it expands and is
propelled through a nozzle.
The first step in the process is to fill a small reservoir, known as the firing
chamber with ink.
.
heater
nozzle plate
The next step is to heat the ink with a thin-film resistor layered above the
firing chamber. As the ink heats up, it expands to form a bubble.
.
drop formation
The bubble continues to expand and finally bursts.
HP DeskJet 700/800 Series PrintersThermal Inkjet Technology
At the instant when the bubble bursts, the ink is forced through the nozzle
located below the firing chamber and out onto the paper.
Bubble collapse
begins refill
.
Orifice meniscus settles to
complete refill
.
As the bubble collapses, the ink in the orifices retracts, breaking off the
ejected drop and drawing the meniscus into the orifice. The surface tension
in this deformed meniscus produces the suction to draw in fresh ink to refill
the chamber.
This process is repeated up to 12,000 times a second and creates residual
heat in the resistor. A layer of silicon is placed above the resistor to cool it
by transferring the residual heat away.

Potential Health Effects
Primary Routes of Exposure: Skin, eye, oral and inhalation
Acute Health Hazards:
Skin: Ink may cause slight skin irritation characterized by redness
and swelling after prolonged contact. Indications may be masked by
color of ink.
Eye: Ink may be mildly irritating.
Oral: Accidental ingestion of nitrates may result in respiratory
depression. Primary indicators of prolonged exposure include
shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness and cyanosis (bluish skin
and lips).
Inhalation: Prolonged intentional inhalation may result in primary
irritation to the respiratory tract.
Chronic Toxicity: None noted.
Carcinogenicity: No component is a listed carcinogen in the National
Toxicology Program (NTP) Annual Report or found to be
carcinogenic by International Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC) or OSHA.
