Windows 98 &
Windows 95
Computer Setup is an operating system-independent utility that allows customers to modify the
configuration of their notebooks and to enable Compaq specific features of the notebooks.
Through Computer Setup, users can also change the system settings and quickly and easily set up
Compaq notebook computers.
Compaq Diagnostics for Windows
!
Windows 98
Compaq Diagnostics for Windows allows users to test hardware components and includes a
feature called Configuration Record. With Configuration Record, users can create a detailed
snapshot of the system hardware and software configuration. Multiple snapshots can be recorded
for use in troubleshooting technical issues. Diagnostics for Windows is the only application that
can locally retrieve detailed information specific to Compaq notebook and desktop computers.
Diagnostics for Windows is an indispensable troubleshooting tool for users, system
administrators, and technical support providers.

With Intelligent Manageability, Compaq responds to the need that customers have for easy-tomanage computers in stand-alone and networked environments. Compaq addresses this need by
focusing on five primary customer concerns:
•Asset Management—Provides the user with detailed configuration information about the
computer and allows the system administrator to inventory and track computers and
components from one central location.
•Fault Management—Provides the user and system administrator with prefailure and other
alerts. Prefailure alerts generate advance warnings to minimize downtime and data loss from
hardware failures.
•Security Management—Prevents unauthorized access to critical data and valuable computer
components.
•Integration Management—Uses industry-standard technologies while partnering with
computer management software vendors.
•Configuration Management—Provides the latest drivers, utilities, and support software to
optimize computer performance; available on CD-ROM and the Compaq Web site at
http://www.compaq.com.
Intelligent Manageability also addresses the following concepts:
•Hardware and software—Enables customers to manage computers intelligently. This
management tool is designed for computers in both mobile and connected environments.
•Innovation and standardization—Establishes a non-proprietary approach to solving
manageability issues through the Compaq Management Solutions Partners Program, ensuring
tight integration and compatibility with leading computer management software vendors.
•Total Cost of Ownership—Protects the investment by increasing its value over the life of
the product and reduces the total cost of owning one or more computers.
•Product Parity—Includes virtually the same Intelligent Manageability functionality across
all platforms on all commercial portable and desktop computers.
For additional information about Intelligent Manageability, refer to the Intelligent Manageabilityfor Portables white paper.

Video
!
Evo N400c computers feature the ATI Mobility-M video chipset. Software drivers enable all
functionality of the chipset. Driver support is complemented by a display utility that provides
easy access to video settings through the Windows Control Panel.
Multimedia
!
Software MPEG Support
DirectX is a collection of application program interfaces (APIs) designed to create and play back
multimedia content on personal computers. With these APIs, developers can easily create cuttingedge graphic media such as 3D VRML and support Web technologies like streaming, moving
picture playback, and online gaming and modeling.
Audio
!
Audio drivers on the Evo N400c enable the ESS Allegro audio chipset to run multimedia
applications using Microsoft DirectSound audio capability. This PCI audio chipset accelerates
Microsoft DirectSound applications. In addition to playing WAV and MIDI files, DirectSound
provides a high-quality wave-mixing facility and an industry-standard MIDI playback system.
DirectSound also provides added control over the memory utilization of the sound controller,
allowing user selection of sounds to be cached.

DriveLock is a security feature that offers advanced protection against unauthorized access to
valuable data on computer hard drives. Two passwords control access to the hard drives, which
provide customers with a means to unlock a protected drive for which the day-to-day user
password has been lost. Hard drives protected with DriveLock remain protected even if removed
from the notebook. Features and settings are accessed through the Compaq F10 Setup Utility.

Security Management is a Windows Control Panel extension that provides an intuitive interface
to security features unique to Compaq portable computers. Through the Control Panel security
applet, users can set the power-on password of the computer and enable QuickLock and
QuickBlank features.
Power-On Password
!
Windows 98
The power-on password prevents an unauthorized user from powering on the system. After a
power-on password is established, the user is required to type the password during the power-on
process.
The power-on password allows the user to enable QuickLock, a hot-key combination used to lock
the keyboard. While QuickLock is enabled, any keys pressed are ignored until the power-on
password is entered. If QuickLock is enabled, the user can elect to have the keyboard locked
when the computer enters suspend mode, or the user can have the screen blanked when
QuickLock is activated. Setting the screen to blank when QuickLock is activated is called
QuickBlank.

Power Management
Advanced Power Management (APM) provides power conservation features with Windows
NT 4.0. Users access these features through the Compaq Power Management Utility. This

The Battery Status feature shows the position of multiple battery locations in the computer. If a
battery is present in a given location, the status (high, low, critical, or charging) and a percentage
of charge remaining for that battery are shown. The Battery Status feature provides a critical
value-add for Compaq customers, reporting the status of each individual battery, in addition to the
cumulative battery status.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the internal hard drive partitioned on Evo N400c models?
On new Evo family products with Windows 98 and Windows 2000, the hard drive is partitioned
using FAT32. FAT32 provides a number of advantages over its predecessor, FAT16, including
support for partitions larger than 2 GB and smaller cluster sizes.
How can DVD movies be viewed on Evo N400c models?
The Compaq DVD Solution is preloaded on new Evo family products. A software-based DVD
decoder/player features an easy-to-use interface and allows users to view DVD video releases.
The DVD player is installed when a DVD movie is inserted into the DVD-ROM drive for the
first time. This application is designed for use with Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and
Windows 2000.
Is the preinstall image on N400c models backward compatible with Armada
E500, M300, or M700 models?
Because of architectural changes on the new Evo N400c model, the image is not backward
compatible. However, many of the individual software components on this model are shared
across several families.
If a new model is introduced, will all previously released models in the
family that are still being manufactured be updated with the new preinstall
image?
No, many customers have expressed a need for consistency. Therefore, Compaq will make every
effort to maintain a consistent software image on Evo N400c models during the life of these
models. Compaq will supply white papers to provide the necessary information to customers who
want to maintain a single list of software components for all Evo N400c models.
How do I obtain updated software components?
The latest software updates are available from the Compaq Web site at http://www.compaq.com.
For customers without Web access, the Compaq Software Support CD Kit is available. In North
America, call 1-800-952-7689 for more information.
How can I learn about the functionality of these software components?
Evo Family Software white papers describe the features of each of the listed software
components. As updated software versions are introduced with new products, these white papers
will be updated.
Where can I learn more if I want to install the OS and all the Compaq
software myself?
The Installing Microsoft Windows on Compaq Portable Products white papers describe the steps
required to install the supported Microsoft operating systems.

Evo N400c Software Overview—Second Edition19
Will this image change significantly if new models are introduced?
As much stability as possible is provided in new models. Changes made to the preinstall images
will be limited to modifications that will support new hardware features or will significantly
improve overall performance.
How will I know what has changed?
Updated Evo Family Software white papers describe any updates or differences in software
versions that are introduced with new products.
Can I use these same software components on previous Armada families?
Although some software will be backward compatible with previous Armada families, some
software is not because of architectural changes made to the current line of products.
