The purpose of this white paper is to present both an overview of the preinstalled software with operating system support and a brief description of major software components and features.

This document is intended for Compaq personnel and customers who need information about the software provided on the Evo preinstall images.

Benefits of the new Evo™ N400c preinstall image include:

• New audio and video drivers for the ESS Allegro audio and ATI graphics chipset

• Updated MultiBay drivers to support enhanced swapping capabilities with Windows 98

• New management agents

• Updated Network Interface Card (NIC) drivers

• Updated DVD movie playback software

• Support for 700 MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III processor-based models

Operating Systems

Operating systems available for the Evo N400c series include:

• Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 1

Operating systems with limited support for the Evo N400c series:

• Microsoft Windows 95 OSR 2.1

The version of Windows 98 preinstalled on Evo N400c models is SE.

Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0

Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6 (SP6) is offered for N400c on the QuickRestore CD.

Hardware Functionality and Software Enhancements

IMPORTANT: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 was originally designed for desktop computing environments. Some portable computer features are not supported by Windows NT 4.0 and do not function in the same manner as with Windows 98. With Windows NT 4.0, newer technologies such as MultiPort, USB, and Infrared are not supported. Proper shutdown of Windows NT 4.0 prior to docking, undocking, or switching MultiBay devices is required.
