Safety In fo rm ation and Precaut i on s
WARNING!
Please read and follow the following safety precautions. Failure to follow th e instructions below may increase your risk of collision and personal injury.
The Please Drive Safely screen is displayed each time the NavMate Navigation System is turned ON as a reminder to make use of the system’s navigational aids in a safe manner.
Before us in g the NavMat e Navi gat ion Sys tem , read t his entir e manu al. M ake sure that you are familiar with the system’s features and know how to operate the system. Proper use of the NavMate Navigation System includes the following gu i de li n es:
The NavMate Navigation System is not a substitute for your personal judgment. The route suggestions should never supersede any loc al traffic regulation or your personal judgment and/or knowledge of safe driving practices. Prior to completing any maneuvers suggested by your navigation system (for example, a U-turn or a left turn), verify that you can legally and safel y comp let e th e maneu ver. Do not follow ro ute su gge st ions i f t hey direc t you to perform an unsafe or illegal maneuver, would place you in an un safe situation, or would route you into an area that you consider unsafe.
Glance at the screen only when necessary and safe to do so. Let the comp u te r vo ice gui de you. If pro lo n ge d vi e wing is necessary, pull of f the road to a safe location.
Do not use the NavMate Navigation System to locate emergency services (such as police, fire stations, hospitals, and clinics). The database may not include all emergency service providers. Use your own best judgment and ask for directions in these situations.

iv
When the vehicle is in motion, the NavMate Navigation System’s display unit should only be programmed by the front seat passenger. The driver should no t program the system unless the vehicle i s pa rk e d in a safe location.
The NavMate Navigation System’s map database provides information on suggested routes without regard to factors that may affect your driving experience or the time required to arrive at your destination. For example, the sy stem do es n ot r efle ct roa d detou rs , clos ure s or con stru cti on, s ome ro ad char acteristics (e.g., road surface, slope or grade, weight or height restrictions, etc.), temporary traffic congestion, weather conditions, and similar factors. Use your personal judgment or the navigati on sys t e m’s “Detour” function as the situation warrants to calculate an alternate route.
To use the system as effectively and safely as possible, obtain updated syst em CD ’s as they bec ome avai lable. Fo r the latest CD’s Pleas e call 186NAVMATE1 (1-866-286-2831) or vi sit www.horizonnav.com.
Do not position the display unit in a location that obstructs driver view of the road, airbag deplo y ment, instr u ments or con trols to operat e the vehicle.
Adjust the display unit so the screen can be viewed with just a quick glance.
Set the volume level of the display unit at a level that allows you to hear outside traffic and emergency services.
Do not disassemble or m odify the s ystem as this may lead to damage. If a problem occurs, stop using the system immediately and contact your dealer. Problems that require immediate attention include lack of sound or video, noxious odors or smoke from the computer or display unit, or foreign objects dropped inside the unit.
Wear your seat belt at all times to avoid collisions with anything in the vehicle’s interior, incl uding the NavMate Navigation System.

1 Introduction to Y our Navigation System
As you travel, your NavMate Navigation System functions as your co-pilot,
prov idi ng turn-by-tu rn visual and voice assistance to direc t you to you r sel ect ed destin at ion. Because the s ystem k nows where y ou a re and whe re you want to go, it c an qui ckly calculate step-by-step directions that provide the shortest time route to any destinat ion available on the included na vigation map CD. The map CD i nclud es ten s of th ousan d s of roa d way and ma ppin g destinations, and pre pr o gramm ed point of i nterest (P OI) l oc ations in over 40 categories. Simply ent er your desired de stination into your NavMate Navigation System, and its advan c ed intell igence do e s th e rest.
With your NavMate Navigation System, if you deviate from the planned
route, the navigation system will automatically recalculate the route to determine a new one from your cur rent location. If you wan t to intentionally avoid certain roads or freeways, your NavMate will do that too.
The NavMate Navigation System incorporates direction-sensing electronics,
Global Positioning System (G P S) sate llites, and a roadway m ap database to calculate a nd d isplay travel directio n s . T he s ystem’s GP S antenna receives signals from a constellation of 24 satellites orbiting the earth and uses the strongest of signals, to determine your position to within 30 meters. The navigation system’s sophisticated software and additional sensors are used to provide the highly accurate positioning necessary to provide real-time, accurate, turn-by-turn route guidance.
Vehicle Direction-Sensing Electronics
The NavMate Navigation System’s computer combines vehicle speed and
head ing chang e, t oge the r w ith GPS in for m atio n, to accu ra te ly d et ermi ne vehi cl e headi ng and position on a digital map. This information is relayed to you as you proceed to your selected destination using voice guidance, the turn-by-turn display and a digital map. When in Portable mode, the odometer signal in the vehicle is not used.
Computerized Map and Information Database
The map used by y o ur NavMate N avigation System was c reat e d from hig h -
resolution aerial photographs for most areas of the country and stored on Map CD’s. This data is enhanced with a variety of useful travel information, such as

fre ewa y sign age and over 500,000 point of interest locations in over 40 categories, ranging from tourist attract ions, golf courses and government buildings to gas stations , airports, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and automated tell er m achines (AT M s).
Metro Area Coverage
Metro Area Coverage includes all defined roads within a city as well as the are a’s entire road net work (interstate highways, state and county roads). In a metro area, a typical segment of a roadway may contain up to 150 pieces of information, such as road type (freeway, ramp, city street, to name a few), oneway re st ric tions, turn in g r es tricti on s , an d al te rnate street na m e s. It is thi s va st quantity of inform ation i n a m etro ar ea that allows your n avig ation s ystem to provide accurate route planning and directional guidance. Metro Area Coverage is not yet complete for all metro ar eas, though ongoing digital mapping is continually expanding the coverage.
Intertown Coverage
Intert own Coverage is provided for more rural areas of the country to sea m le ssly connect the detailed areas. The “City C enter” point of interest category is useful for routing to cities w here M etro Area Co verage is not available. This information includes all roads in the American Automobile Association’s (AAA) state road maps.
Map and Information Database
Yo u r Na v M a te Navigat io n S ystem’s map a n d infor mation data base is constant ly being updated for completeness and accuracy. While the database was j udged t o be as accu ra te as p ossib le at the time of its relea se , a map da tabas e can n ever b e 10 0% acc ur ate. Roadway i nfo rmati on that is mainta in ed in t he map databases, such as turning restrictions or road names, changes over time. In addition, points of interests, such as restaurants, hotels, and gas stations, al s o cha ng e over tim e. The co mplex ity of k e eping this dir e ctor y curren t mean s that some pieces of in formation m ay be missi ng or ou t-of-date at times.

Basic Mechanics
A spe c ial harn e ss connects th e na v i g a tio n system to your vehicle’s electrica l system circuits. Connection locations vary depending on vehicle design. In brief, however, this is how the navigation system is connected:
Ignition ON provides power to wake up the navigation system.
The bat ter y ci rcuit powers the navi gati on sy stem ’s computer. When the Ignition is OFF, a minimal source of Batter y power is needed to store the vehicle’s last location/position, similar to the way the time on your vehicle’s clock is stored while the car is OFF.
Ground connection completes electrical circuits.
Vehicle speed sensor circuit provides information on how fast the vehicle is traveling.
Reverse sensor circuit signals when the vehicle is backing up.
A 3 amp fuse protects the navigation system from system fluctuations.
