Unpacking
The Holmberg musical clock is
shipped in two parts: The instrument is packed in a wooden shipping crate, with Phillips head screws securing the cover; and the organ pipes, are packed separately in a package which includes the organ pipes and gloves for the handling of the organ pipes.
Open the instrument case, and remove enough foam packing to allow for the removal of the instrument.
Remove all wrapping, and plug in the Musical Clock. Open the control panel and turn on the power switch.
Reach into the rear of the instrument and remove all foam packing. After that has been accomplished, slide the cardboard packing free of the chime rods.
Insert the C cell battery into the dial movement. The positive end of the battery is indicated next to the movement.

Turn on the DEMO switch, and just let it play (blowing free air)
while you open the pipes and arrange them for their installation.
This will assure that all of the air channels are open, clean and
clear and will prevent debris from entering the organ during pipe installation. (see gure on opposite page)
From the pipes box, using gloves, lay out the organ pipes. All of the pipes are marked on their back side with the correct note.
Chime detail after the packing is removed
Picking a long pipe, noting the marking and checking the pipe layout in your Owner’s Guide, you will see where it needs to be placed in the instrument.
Be sure that the pipe you are installing is properly hooked before you let go. The bodies for these metal pipes are made by our pipe maker in England, and repair and/ or replacement is lengthy.
With all of the pipes installed, turn o the DEMO Switch, and press the SELECT Switch until the display shows TUNE.
Push the ENTER Switch twice, and all will be ready to check the tuning. Please refer to the Turning page in your Owner’s Guide.

Introduction
Holmberg musical clocks are contemporary versions of historical mechanical organ clocks of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The clocks are built by master organ builders, father and son, trained in old world discipline and tradition.
Automatic musical instruments incorporating organ ute pipes of exceptional quality have been treasured for hundreds of years and today are mostly found in museums and are coveted by collectors. This quality is accomplished through the use of hand selected hardwoods; design and execution of the proper logarithmic scales for organ pipe making; and artistic voicing, nishing and tonal regulation.
Music specically composed for automatic musical instruments by some of the world’s greatest composers (Handel, Haydn, Beethoven et al.) often included ornamentation beyond the ability of the average organist. Similarly, chest work and mechanism to perform such complex music require speed and function beyond the capabilities
of the average pipe organ. The unique low pressure electro-pneumatic design of Holmberg chest work responds easily to the demands of these composers. The Holmberg music al clock sets new standards of engineering and reliability with 100 per cent hardwood construction, ne German leathers, and expansion channeling.
Bringing all this together into a new instrument with exibility and programmability beyond the imagination of the early builders, we employ the springs, escapements, gears, wheels, jewels, pins and barrels of our time; the mighty microprocessor with solid state circuitry custom designed for our digital microcontroller.
With the synergistic coupling of the work of great composers, superb craftsmanship, 4/4 Westminster chimes and world class computer technology, we present the Holmberg musical clock.

The Microcontroller
The microcontroller that supervises the operation of your musical clock is an advanced integrated computer system. Its operating system governs the time keeping functions of the clock, the automatic playing of music and chimes, and many subsidiary functions available to the owner, and the system’s internal maintenance functions.
The main components of the microcontroller are:

The Microcontroller
The music that comes with your musical clock, and additional music which may be purchased later, is stored on an internal compact ash card which is already installed in the clock. When power is applied, the system will take a few moments to initialize itself and Play Selection will be visible on the display. When this is true, the system is functional. Nothing else is required for the clock to automatically chime and play music at designated intervals.
However, your instrument is capable of much, much, more. Other sections of this guide will introduce you to features that will allow you to tailor the system to your own desires.
To use the control panel simply open the drawer or door, whichever your model happens to have, and the control panel and display will be visible.
The Holmberg Musical Clock 15
The Operating system of your musical clock contains a menu of commands for setting its various performance characteristics. In most cases, the Select key will display an option and the Enter key will execute the displayed task. For example, pressing the Select key will display each function and pressing the Enter key will activate it. To help keep track of where you are in the system’s menu, certain commands are bracketed, such as [Add]. This indicates that you are using or setting the displayed command.
The remainder of this section is a description of these functions and ample space is provided for your own notes.

Set Volume
Set Volume
Set the current music volume(s). The
Holmberg musical clock is ordered with one or more volumes of music that is stored on the compact ash card. The Set Volume function allows the owner to set the current volume(s) from which the system will choose music to play. For example: Suppose the clock is delivered with Haydn,
Press Enter to set the current Volume(s) from the music library.
The Set Volume function has several commands to make it easier to program the current volumes. They are:
List Add New Status
Handel, and Christmas Hymns. The owner may wish to play the Christmas Hymns only during the Christmas season, so the owner would use this function to change the way in which the system chooses its musical selections.
The following is a detailed description of each command of Set Volume:
List: This will display volumes that are current. Press Select to display the next volume name. Press Enter to quit the list function.
Add: This will add volumes to the current volume list. Press Select until the wanted volume is displayed. Press Enter.
New: This will erase the current volume list. Press Enter.
26 Model C-17 Owner’s Guide
Status: This will display the number of volumes in the current volume list. Press Enter.
Quit: This will exit the Set Volume function. Press Enter.
This function is critical to the correct operation of the clock. Should the clock loose power during the operation of this function the clock may be left in an unstable state. Any of the operations that play musical selections, such as autoplay and demo play depend on the settings of the Set Volume function. If this should occur, simply repeat the Set Volume procedure and choose the New sub-command. This will over-write any erroneous settings.
A typical example of a session to create a new volume list could include:
New, To create a new volume list Add, To add Haydn volume 1 Add, To add Haydn volume 2 Add, To add Handel volume 2 Quit, This creates the new current volume for the clock.
