• This instrument is designed for indoor laboratory
use only.
• Only accessories and parts approved or supplied
by Hoefer, Inc. may be used for operating, maintaining, and servicing this product.
• Only use a power supply that is CE marked or
safety certied by a nationally recognized testing
laboratory.
• The safety lid must be in place before connecting
the power supply leads to a power supply.
• Turn all power supply controls o and disconnect
the power leads before removing the safety lid.
• Circulate only water or 50/50 water/ethylene glycol
through the heat exchanger if so equipped. Do
not connect the heat exchanger to a water tap or
any coolant source where the water pressure is
unregulated.
• Never introduce antifreeze or any organic solvent
into any part of the instrument. Organic solvents
will cause irreparable damage to the unit!
• Do not operate with buer temperatures above
the maximum specied technical specications.

1. Filter Manifold function and description
The FH225V Ten-Place Filter Manifold and
collection box are designed for filtration of up
to 10 samples simultaneously through 25 mm
filters. The filtration assembly consists of a tenplace filter support manifold with individual
filter shut-off valves and vacuum gauge, a filtrate
collection box/vacuum reservoir and 10 stainless steel chimney weights, which serve as both
sample funnels and filter clamps.
A filter placed on a recessed grid is held in place
by a chimney weight. A thin ridge on the bottom
of the chimney weight compresses the edge of
the filter to create a liquidtight seal, which allows
the chimney of the weight to be filled with up to
13 ml of sample liquid. The vacuum to each filter
position is controlled by a Teflon® valve. If the
filtrate is to be discarded, it is allowed to drain
directly into the filtrate collection box. With the
optional FH240 rack (ordered separately), individual filtrates can be collected into test tubes or
27 mm scintillation vials.
The appropriate vacuum source will depend
on the type of filter and samples used. For best
results with membrane-type filters (nitrocellulose, nylon, PVDF with pore sizes <5 µm), a
vacuum pump is recommended.

2. Operating instructions
Tip: Use a long thin object
such as a pencil to stretch the
rubber band before inserting
the test tube.

Optional: Install the FH240 rack (ordered separately).
Test tubes: Wrap a rubber band (provided) around
each pair of posts on the rack. Slide the required
number of 13 × 100 mm test tubes into position—
one tube between a pair of posts. Orient the rack so
that the pegs in the filtrate collection box fit through
the rack slots. When in place, the rack should rest
flat against the bottom of the box.
Scintillation vials: Place the required number of scintillation vials into the rack, and then place the rack
oriented so that the pegs support it. (This position is
180° from the position in which the pegs fit through
the rack slots).

Place the manifold on the filtrate collection box/
vacuum reservoir. If filtrates will be collected separately, check that each filter holder outlet is in a test
tube or scintillation vial.

Connect the top hose connector on the filtrate collection box to a vacuum source. A vacuum pump is
recommended; house vacuum is often insufficient,
especially for membrane filters.

Seal the bottom hose connector by installing a short
piece of tubing and clamping it closed. (The lower
connector serves as a drain for filtrate not collected in
test tubes or vials.)

the bottom of each weight fits inside the well edge.

To open the valve, turn the
handle 90° (the valve handle

Close all valves. (See the illustration on page 2 for
positions.)
Please note that the valve is a threaded stopcock. To be
in position to open and close the drain channel properly with only a 90° turn, it must not be screwed in too
far clockwise nor unscrewed too far counter-clockwise
from the original position, as shown on page 2.

Turn on the vacuum. The gauge will register the
amount of vacuum.

Pour sample(s) into the chimney weight well(s).
Open valves to wells where filtration is desired.
Wash filters, if required.
After filtration

Turn off the vacuum.

Remove each weight then lift the filter with narrow
forceps. A recess next to each filter holder accommodates forceps for easy filter removal.

Drain the collection box if necessary. (See the Care
and maintenance section.)

3. Troubleshooting
Sample leaks
• Wet filter before laying it on the support grid.
• Check the ridge on each chimney weight. If the
ridge is damaged, it must be replaced.
Sample remains in well
• Wet filter before laying it on the support grid.
• Close all valves not in use.
• Make sure there is sufficient vacuum. If using house
vacuum or an aspirator, try using a vacuum pump.
• Check the reservoir gasket for worn areas, and
replace if necessary.
• If the gasket is leaking, try applying a thin film of
lubricant (such as GelSeal) around the perimeter
of the gasket.

4. Care and maintenance
Cleaning
• With the exception of the stainless steel
weights, do not heat any part above 45°C!
Do not autoclave!
• After use, wash each component with a mild
detergent, mild bleach solution, isopropanol,
or ethanol. Never use abrasive cleansers.
• Do not apply acetone to any component
containing PVC (e.g. the filtration box and
support manifold).
• Dry stainless steel parts to prevent rusting.
• The chimney weights are precision machined
and must be handled carefully to avoid damaging the bottom sealing ridge. Store weights
with the ridge pointing up or in the supplied
shipping cushion. Certain types of damage can
be corrected by remachining the ridge.
• Do not remove the stainless steel filter support
grids in the manifold to avoid damaging them.
Replacing the gasket
If the gasket along the rim of the filtrate collection box becomes worn or torn, remove by
lifting and replace with a new gasket. Do not
overstretch the new gasket.
Aligning the valve
If the valve does not allow filtrate to pass in the
open position, check valve alignment by sighting
with a flashlight through filter support grid
and outlet. Screw in the valve (do not force)
until the hole in the valve aligns (the passage
becomes visible).
