HIWATT AMPLIFICATION LIMITED WARRANTY
HIWATT amplifiers are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship
for five (5) full years from the date of purchase with the exception of footswitches,
patch cords, tubes, transformers and meters; these are warranted for 90 days
from date of purchase. This warranty is to the original purchaser only and may
not be transferred. While under warranty, all replacement parts and labor will be
provided without charge. This warranty does not cover damage caused by
misuse, accident, neglect or normal wear and tear. Determination of such
damage shall be by HIWATT Amplification exclusively. The warranty will be void
if repairs have been attempted or performed by anyone other than HIWATT
Amplification.
To validate the warranty, the Warranty Registration Card must be completed and
returned to HIWATT Amplification within ten (10) days of retail purchase.
Should your HIWATT product require service, you must contact either the
HIWATT dealer you purchased it from or HIWATT Amplification directly, and the
need for return will be determined and authorized. Products returned to HIWATT
Amplification require a Return Authorization Number (RA#) on the outside of the
carton. Products needing warranty repair must be returned securely packed to
HIWATT Amplification and must be accompanied by a copy of the original sales
receipt. All transportation charges are the responsibility of the purchaser.
HIWATT Amplification reserves the right to repair or replace defective units. In
the event a duplicate part or product is no longer available, HIWATT
Amplification will replace the product with one of equal, or greater value at the
sole discretion of HIWATT Amplification.
HIWATT Amplification is not responsible for any incidental or consequential
damages resulting from any defect or failure of the product other than the repair
or replacement of the product under the terms of this warranty. This limited
warranty gives you specific legal rights which vary from state to state and is in
lieu of any and all other warranties either expressed or implied except as may
otherwise be required by law.
2005 CLASSIC SERIES AMPLIFIERS
Thank you for purchasing a HIWATT product. A look inside the amplifier will
reveal point-to-point hand wiring, turret tag boards (no printed circuits), and hand
laced wiring harnesses. The power and output transformers are manufactured by
Partridge, the original 1970’s supplier to the original design sheets. The
components and wires are the modern available equivalents of the vintage
components, 1-watt carbon resistors, and wound polyester capacitors being used
throughout.
CUSTOM 50W and 100W Heads
Thank you for purchasing a HIWATT product. These amp heads are as exact a
replica as possible of the DR103’s and DR504’s that were built in the early
seventies under the ownership of Dave Reeves.
CUSTOM 50W Combo
Based on the original “Bulldog” combo, the Custom 50 combo combines the 50watt amplifier head with a specially designed 12“ Fane speaker, all built into an
18 marine ply cabinet.
CUSTOM 20W Head and Combo
Designed for the tube amp lover who prefers the rich, uninhibited tone of pure
Class A, we offer the Custom 20. Powered by two EL-84 valves and utilizing a
high gain controlled preamp in addition to it’s point-to-point wiring with four
12AX7 valves, the Custom 20 serves jazz, pop and rock guitarists alike. The 20watt Combo features a powerful 10” Fane speaker.
CUSTOM STUDIO/STAGE COMBO
Using a specially wound output transformer, the Studio/Stage combo can switch
from 20 watts to 40 watts of power, while retaining its Class A pure tone.
Features gain with switchable boost, full size accutronic spring reverb and 12”
Fane speakers.
CUSTOM 200W and 400W Bass Heads
Designed to the same specification and construction as the DR201 and DR405
respectively, the HIWATT Custom 200 and 400 feature KT-88 power tubes for
the optimum level of output ( 4 x KT-88 in Custom 200 , 6 x KT-88 in Custom 400
), 4 x ECC-83 tubes in the preamp section (add 1 x ECC-81 in the Custom 400 ),
and Partridge transformers. Adjustable 4, 8 & 16 ohm output impedance.
BEFORE OPERATING THIS EQUIPMENT
CAUTION: Extremely high voltages exist in this amplifier and there are no user
serviceable parts. For maintenance or in the unlikely event of a repair being
required, refer to HIWATT Amplification only. DO NOT OPERATE THE
AMPLIFIER WITH ANY OF THE COVERS REMOVED.
WARNING: EXPOSURE TO HIGH SOUND VOLUME MAY CAUSE
PERMANENT HEARING DAMAGE.
1. Check that the voltage selector is set to the correct wall voltage.
2. Always use an earthed supply.
3. Always connect a loudspeaker system of the correct impedance (4,8 or 16
Ohms) and set the impedance selector to that value prior to switching on
the amplifier. Use only correct two-core loudspeaker cables terminated
with mono jack plugs. Use of co-axial leads like guitar leads will invalidate
the warranty and may damage the amplifier. In common with all valve
amplifiers, it is vital that the amplifier is not operated into an open circuit.
4. Check that the correct fuses are fitted in the fuse holders on the rear
panel.
5. Before switching the amplifier on ensure that the standby switch is in the
off position.
OPERATION
• The Classic 50W, 100W heads feature all tube performance, with four ECC83
preamp tubes, four EL34 power tubes and adjustable 4, 8 & 16 ohm output
impedance.
• Dual channel (Normal & Bright) preamp with Low and High sensitivity input and
individual volume for each channel, suitable for guitar or bass amplification, with
passive or active pickups.
• With the NORMAL VOL or BRILL VOL full you may find that some high gain
pickups and active systems will give a distorted signal.
• Tone Volume section includes Bass, Treble and Middle EQ controls for tone
shaping, and Presence control accentuates overall high and mid frequencies.
• The tone controls operate on either input and the presence control allows an
extremely bright and aggressive sound to be selected at the upper end of the
setting. Experienced HIWATT users will confirm that this was always the case
with the old heads. All the inputs may be used simultaneously (just like the old
bands did).
• Master Volume Control sets the amount of effective output of the four EL34
power tubes.
• Although these heads are primarily designed for clean sounds, they may be
overdriven with any external effect device to offer many other possibilities.
DO’s and DON’T’s
• DO keep amplifier away from children.
• DO unplug amplifier from socket if danger of lightning exists.
• DO switch off all electric equipment before making connections.
• DO avoid direct contact with tubes shortly after amplifier has been turned off.
• DO always use the standby switch when switching on the amplifier. Switching on
an amplifier with EL34 output valves without using the standby could seriously
reduce the valve life. Allow the amplifier to warm up for two minutes before
switching the standby on. The standby can also be used as a mute, for tuning or
a quick string change.
• DO always check the voltage and impedance settings especially when touring or
in a studio setting.
• DO remove AC mains socket if amplifier will be stored for long period of time.
• DO have the output tubes replaced regularly and use only matched sets of
EL34’s. The output valves affect the sound of the amplifier and different players
like different tubes. An average set of quality valves should last for approximately
2000 hours of use, about 5 hours a day for a year. This is the maximum period
for a premium original sound. Always disconnect the amplifier from the mains
and allow the valves, all of which run very hot, to cool prior to replacing them.
• DON’T replace the ECC81 with an ECC83 as this will produce an extremely
unstable high frequency response that will not be controllable. As for the preamp
valves we recommend that they are kept in until they cause trouble. Symptoms of
this are noise, popping and microphone squeals or rattles through the
loudspeaker.
• DON’T disconnect a loudspeaker lead at the loudspeaker end if the amplifier is
still operating (The single situation most likely to cause damage to a valve
amplifier is driving it into an open circuit).
• DON’T attempt to repair or modify a HIWATT product yourself. Only factory
repairs are acceptable in warranty claims, HIWATT Amplification exclusively
relinquishes all responsibility for any unit modified or misused in any way.
• DON’T cover the amplifier or block the air vents.
• DON’T place drinks on top of the amplifier or allow any liquid to fall in it.
• DON’T store the amplifier in damp or dusty conditions, direct sunlight or
extremely high temperatures.
CLEANING
• Do not attempt to clean any part of the amplifier when it is switched on.
• The vinyl may be cleaned with a damp (not wet) cloth or brush.
• The chassis and front panel may be wiped with a moistened cloth with water and
mild detergent or an alcohol based cleaner and then dried.
• Do not use silicone based polishes or solvents as benzene or paint thinner to
clean the unit.
