Design Story: Supporting Ergonomic Comfort
Providing better, more effective products to connect
individuals to their work is one of the key goals of the
Thrive Portfolio, whose products include keyboard and
mouse supports.
These keyboard/mouse supports, designed specifically for Herman Miller, let computer users achieve
the most ergonomic and healthful seated postures.
Such postures let users sit more comfortably with less
shoulder, neck, and wrist strain.
Keyboard/mouse support mechanisms, made from
steel, let users set their keyboard and mouse at the
proper height and angle. The fully adjustable mechanism also includes a position indicator so users can
maintain their preferred height setting and keyboard
angle. The comfort surface tray with mouse tray holds
a detached keyboard, mouse, and “mouse house”—
a container that holds the mouse when the keyboard
support is moved under the work surface.

Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally
includes minimizing the environmental impact of each
of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE)
applies environmentally sensitive design standards to
both new and existing Herman Miller products.
The DfE Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory
compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product
designs in four key areas:
• Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs—
What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and
are they the safest available?
• Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the
end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?
• Recyclability—Do the materials contain recycled
content, and more importantly, can the materials be
recycled at the end of the product’s useful life?
• LCA—Have we optimized the product based on the
entire life cycle?

The fully adjustable keyboard/mouse supports are
Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Gold. This means that
these keyboard/mouse supports have been evaluated
for their material health, and is designed for material
reuse in a closed loop system, such as recycling or
composting. It is assembled using 100% renewable
energy.

recyclable at the end of their useful lives.
Keyboard/mouse supports are comprised of up to
50 percent recycled materials. This figure breaks down
to 10 percent to 26 percent post-consumer recycled
content and 24 percent to 26 percent pre-consumer
recycled content.
The HDPE tray is made from 49% recycled content
and is 94% recyclable.

• Steel components contain approximately 60 percent
recycled content and are 100 percent recyclable.
• Most metal components have a powder-coat paint
finish that emits negligible volatile organic compounds
(VOCs).
• Plastic components are identified with an ASTM
recycling code whenever possible to aid in returning
these materials to the recycling stream.
• Returnable/Recyclable Packaging – Packaging
materials include corrugated cardboard and a
polyethylene plastic bag. The materials are part of a
closed loop recycling system, meaning they can be
recycled repeatedly.
– Whenever possible, shipments between the
Herman Miller and its suppliers include the use
of pallets and other returnable packaging to
minimize waste.
Manufacturing Process
• ISO – Keyboard/mouse supports are manufactured
at an ISO 14001-certified site.
• Worker Health and Safety – Herman Miller strives to
meet or exceed OSHA standards. Keyboard/mouse
supports are manufactured at an OHSAS 18001certified site.
