Flute™ Personal Light
Design Story: Accommodating Small Footprints
Providing better, more effective products to connect individuals to their work is one of the key goals of the Thrive Portfolio, whose products include the Flute personal light.
Designed by Tom Newhouse, the Flute personal light— with its simple aesthetics and light weight—provides uncomplicated compatibility within any office footprint. Flute can be used freestanding or with a surface mount. Flute’s lightscale design can also help reduce a user’s carbon footprint by minimizing packaging, shipping, and storage. And, it incorporates the latest in LED technology to provide high-quality light output, while consuming 30-50+% less energy than traditional task lights. Using only a total of 5.2 watts of energy, Flute provides a total of 160 lumens and has a lifespan of more than 60,000 hours (about 23 years with average use).
Herman Miller’s Design Protocol
Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally includes minimizing the environmental impact of each of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products.
LCA—Have we optimized the product based on the entire life cycle?
Material Content
Flute personal light components are constructed from zinc, steel, electronics, aluminum and plastic.
ZINC 61%
STEEL 16%
ELECTRONICS 15%
ALUMINUM 5%
PLASTIC 3%
Flute is up to 85 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.
Flute is comprised of 37 percent recycled materials. This figure breaks down to 20-percent post-consumer and 17-percent pre-consumer recycled content.
The DfE Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product
POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED CONTENT 20%
designs in four key areas:
Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs— What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and
PRE-CONSUMER RECYCLED CONTENT 17%
are they the safest available?
Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?
Recyclability—Do the materials contain recycled content, and more importantly, can the materials be recycled at the end of the product’s useful life?
• Steel components contain approximately 35 percent recycled content and are 100 percent recyclable.
• Most metal components have a powder-coat paint finish that emits negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
