Your Heathkit Model AA-15 Solid-State Stere
Amplifier will provide you with the ultimate in
high fidelity reproduction. Front-panel rocker type switches are used for the selection of Mode Tape Mon, Tone Flat, Loudness, Main speakers, and Remote speakers. Dual Bass and dual Trebl controls are used in each channel. A Balan
control permits the attenuation of either the right or left channel signal to compensate for speaker
placement, room acoustics, or other factors that
might otherwise produce unequal sound level
from the speakers
Individual input Level controls, which only nee
to be adjusted occasionally, are located behin a small door in the front panel. A separate Level control is provided for each input channel of the
Phono, Tape, Tuner, Tape Monitor, and Auxiliar
inputs. These Level controls enable you to hav
qual sound levels when switching from one
source to another
A back-lighted dial, a die cast front panel and a
walnut cabinet (optional) give the Amplifier a
impressive appearance that matches its high
erformance.

Remote speaker systems can be used in conjun
tion with your main speaker systems with this
Amplifier. Any type of high fidelity speaker
that have an impedance between 4 and 16 ohms
,
can be used. Phone jacks are provided on th front panel so two pairs of stereo headphone can be used simultaneously. The Speaker switch es on the front panel will turn off one or bot speaker systems if only headphone listening is desired
Thirty transistors and eighteen diodes are used in the most advanced simiconductor circuitry. Most of the components are mounted on fiv
printed circuit boards; there are only a fe
chassis-mounted parts. Two cable assemblies with color-coded wires, connect to numbere
d
h
oles in the circuit boards to minimize assembly
time and reduce the possibility of wiring errors
Overload protection makes the power amplifier
circuits virtually short-circuit-proof. Should the speaker leads be shorted together accidentally
the zener diodes will limit the current in th
output transistors. The thermal circuit breaker
will cut off the DC supply voltage should the out
put transistors in either channel become too hot.
These circuit breakers close automatically whe the temperature of the output transistors returns to normal

The Amplifier packaging consists of the large
shipping carton, which contains smaller pack
ages and a number of loose parts. Some of the
smaller packages have numbers 1 through 5
stamped on them (#1, #2, etc.). After these
numbered packages have been removed from
the large carton, the remaining parts in th
carton will be part of package #5.
You will be directed to open each of these pac
ages as they are needed. Each of the assembl sections of the Manual contains its own Parts List and Step-By-Step instructions. At the
beginning of each Parts List you will be instruct
ed which numbered package to open. You will also be directed to remove some of the part
k
from package #5 to complete each assembly
section.
To avoid intermixing parts, do not open any of the
parts packs until directed t
ginning of one of the Parts Lists. Any part that i
packaged in an individual envelope with a par
number on it, should be placed back in its en
velope after it is identified, until that part is
called for in a step.
y
Refer to the "Kit Builders Guide" for additional
information on unpacking, parts identification tools, wiring, soldering, and step-by-step as sembly procedures.

CAUTION: When soldering parts on the circuit board, do not use to much solder. This could cause a so der bridge between two foils tha should not be connected together. If a solder bridge should occur reheat the connection and quickly
b
rush away the solder between th foils. Also, after soldering several com
ponents, wipe the tip of the so
dering iron with a cloth or a dam
s
ponge. Keeping the tip clean wil
insure better solder connections.

lowing steps. As you mount each transistor, mak sure the indicated wide space on the transistor,
transistor socket, and mica insulator is lined up
s
with the wide space on the heat sink. Also, make
s
sure the ridges on the socket seat properly in th
heat sink mounting holes before tightening th
screws. See Pictorial 5-1.
7
) Inspect the transistors. If the leads ar
bent, straighten them so they are perpen-
icular with the transistor body.
pply a layer of silicone grease on both
sides of four mica insulators with the tip of
your finger. Important: Use 1/2 of a contai
er for each insulator. Then place the insu lators on the transistors. The inset drawin on Pictorial 5-1 shows a good way to remove the s
ilicone grease from the container.
f) Place both threaded-hole heat sinks (#215
22) o
n your work surface with the flang
positioned up as shown. Then mount a 4041
transistor, a mica insulator, and a transis
tor socket on each heat sink. Use 6-32 x 1/2
screws.
Bend the lugs of the transistor sockets at a
45 degree angle as shown.

Then mount a nylon transistor cover,
40411 transistor, a mica insulator, and a

6-32 x 11/16" screws and 1/8" spacers
IMPORTANT: Be sure to tighten the 6-32 x

and seat them against the transistor case
Good electrical contact between these parts
is essential for proper circuit operation.

The purpose of the Initial Checkout section of th Manual is to make sure that your Amplifier wil operate properly, and that it will not be damaged
as a result of a wiring error or some other
difficulty when it is first turned on. A transistor
for example, could be destroyed instantly by a
short circuit that causes excessive current.
Initial Checkout is divided into the following
parts

HUM INJECTI
To make hum injection tests, you will touch th
tip of a narrow-bladed screwdriver to the signa
input points of the various circuits. By noticing
the sound reproduced by the speakers as yo touch these points, you can determine whether the circuits are operating
Before you begin the tests, make sure the switches and controls are in the following p sitions. Then do not change any control or switc
from these positions unless a test directs you to
do so.

ON TESTS
CAUTION: Full AC line voltage will be presen

at several places in the Amplifier when the lin
c
ord plug is connected to an AC outlet. Use
screwdriver with an insulated handle, and do not
u
let your fingers touch the screwdriver shaft whil any part of your body is in contact with any con
ductor, metal object, or the chassis. Be especi
ally careful that you do not touch the AC acce

sory sockets, POWER switch, or fuseholder.
h
As you make these tests, touch the tip of the
screwdriver blade only to the point specified Be careful that the screwdriver does not slip, o short across two points at once. If you do no get the proper response in any of these tests
refer to Stage-By-Stage Signal Injection (Page

Manual). Then locate and repair the cause o
trouble before you continue with the next test in
