Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Hydrive 112 Bass Enclosure from Hartke! We know you don’t
ENGLISH
like reading owners manuals, but you’ve just purchased one of the nest bass speaker systems around, and we want to tell you about it. So, before you plug in and start popping and
slapping, we’d like to suggest you take just a few moments to scan these pages. We’ll make
it as painless as possible, we promise—and, who knows, you might just pick up a tip or two.
The Hydrive series is line of bass speaker enclosures featuring Hartke’s Patented Hydrive
hybrid cone bass transducers. The HX112 provides 300 watts of power handling from the
single 12-inch Hydrive speaker, with a 1-inch titanium compression driver in a precision
tuned, vented enclosure.
Hydrive transducers are a radical change, and improvement, in bass speaker technology.
Hartke’s unique hybrid cone speaker is constructed using an outside paper cone producing
deep and warm low frequencies and an inside aluminum cone that produces mids that cut,
yet are still sweet. The Hydrive 112 speaker incorporates a cast frame design, supporting
robust motors constructed with large, dual edge-wound voice coils enabling 4 and 8 Ohm
operation, and neodymium magnets, providing increased power handling while being
lightweight! To complete the speaker system, there is a 1-inch titanium compression driver
with level control, producing the high frequency response that allows you to get a sweet
tone that cuts through the back-line. The Hydrive cabinets are constructed using high
quality birch plywood with extensive bracing and dado joinery, which makes them rigid
and at the same time lightweight. The vinyl covering, steel grill and corners provide added
protection while moving the enclosure from gig to gig. Built road-tough, the black and
chrome Hydrive 112 says you’re ready to rock! Hydrive cabinets are super clean and natural
with enough power handling to produce a radical range of sounds. That versatility, together
with Hartke’s famous reliability, make the Hydrive 112 cabinet the ideal cabinet for bassists
playing jazz, funk, country, roots rock, death metal or for whatever style you create.

Before you hook up your speaker cabinet, be sure that you understand a little about
impedance. Impedance is the electronic load (resistance) that the speaker puts on the
power amplier and is measured in Ohms (Ω). Too much of a load (indicated by lower
impedance number) can damage your amplier, while too small a load (indicated by
higher impedance number) will not draw enough power from your amplier.
Here is the tricky, yet simple rule of impedance: When two speakers with the same
impedance are wired in “Parallel”, the total system impedance is cut in half, and when
two speakers with the same impedance are wired in “Series”, the total impedance is
the sum of the speakers individual impedance.
The HX112 has an innovative dual voice coil design
that allows you to choose between 4 or 8 ohms
impedance. The cabinet has a impedance selector
switch on the rear jack plate. So, if your amplier
has a minimum impedance of 4-ohms and space on
the stage is tight, set the HX112 impedance selector
switch to 4-ohms to get the full power of your amp. If you want to use two HX112
together in parallel, for a total impedance of 4 Ohms, or add an HX112 to your current
setup, set the impedance selector switch to 8-ohms.

About Power Handling
There is a lot of discussion around speaker cabinet power handling and choosing the
correct amplier. While any speaker system can be damaged by either over powering
or under powering it, the style of playing can assist you in the decision of how much
power your amplier needs. When using an amplier with too little power, there is a
tendency to push the amplier into overload (excessive clipping). This will generate
enough distortion to overheat and burn the voice coil. If you are using an amplier
that produces a lot of power, you can damage the speaker by running the amp to the
maximum and pushing the speaker beyond it physical limits.
The most important point to consider is how the power is used in order to ensure the
speaker is presented with a clean signal, and then choose an amplier that delivers
adequate power for your style of playing without exceeding the cabinet’s maximum
power handling during normal usage. If your amp has an on-board compressor or limiter, we recommend you use it to protect the speaker. If the sound is getting distorted
you’re probably starting to damage the speaker. While it is okay to have extra power
for added headroom, simply adding power will not necessarily increase your volume
signicantly. Adding more speakers will usually have a greater impact on your overall
level.
The good news is that Hartke Hydrive cabinets are very ecient and they run well with
ampliers that have lower power. Plus, each model carries a high power handling rating, making them ideal with more powerful heads. The Hydrive cabinets will work well
with the Hartke HA3500, HA5500, LH500, LH1000, and Kilo.

Connecting the HX112
IMPORTANT: There is a minimum safe impedance so be sure to check the manu-

facturer’s recommended impedance for your amplifier to avoid any damage to your
amplifier or voiding your warranty.
Connecting the HX112 to Your Amplier (4 Ohms)
The HX112 connections are made via
either the 1/4” phone jacks or Speakon
connectors located on the rear panel
jack-plate. Be sure to set the impedance
selector switch to the 4 Ohm position.
Make your connection with unshielded
speaker cable. Connect the Amplier
Output to the speaker Input on the
HX112’s rear jackplate.
Using the EXTENSION Output (8 Ohms)
The HX112 provides a convenient
Extension Output for connecting additional speaker cabinets in parallel.
Be sure to read the section above on
impedance to insure a proper hook-up
with your amplier. Follow these steps
below to connect two HX112 using the
Extension Output. Set the impedance
selector switches on both cabinets
to the 8 Ohm position. Connect the
Amplier Output to the Input of the
rst HX112. Now, connect the Extension Output to the Input of the second
cabinet.

Using The High Frequency Level Control
Using The High Frequency Level Control
Your Hydrive 112 cabinet has a control used
to adjust the level of the high frequency
compression driver. The switch has three
positions, ON, -6dB and OFF. When the switch is
set to OFF, the compression driver is completely
out of the circuit and off. This position will give
you a darker frequency response, which a lot
of bassists like for rock and metal. If you set
the switch to –6dB, you get half the level of
the horn. The frequency response becomes a
little brighter, which is nice for cutting through the back-line in just about any type
of band. When set to ON, you get the full level of the compression driver and the
response is full range with nice treble response. This voicing is great for bass soloists,
for funk, R&B or for whatever style requires some serious, sweet top end.
At Hartke, we don’t put any player in a category or box, we realize that your sound is
personal regardless of the style of music you play. The Hydrive 112 cabinet is designed
to offer a natural response to faithfully reproduce the sound of your bass and amp.
The High Frequency Level control gives you another dimension of control to get the
sound you’re looking for. Like always, with a little bit of experimentation, you’ll easily
dial up the sound that fits your style and musical personality.

Avant de relier votre enceinte, vous devez vous familiariser avec la notion d'impédance. L'impédance est la charge électronique mesurée en Ohms, (Ω)que le
haut-parleur soumet à l'amplificateur de puissance. Les charges trop importantes
(indiquées par des valeurs d'impédance plus faibles) peuvent endommager votre
amplificateur, et les charges trop faibles (indiquées par des valeurs d'impédance plus
élevées) ne permettent pas d'exploiter toute la puissance de l'amplificateur.
Le calcul de l'impédance est simple : lorsque deux haut-parleurs sont reliés en "parallèle", l'impédance totale est réduite de moitié. Lorsque deux haut-parleurs sont reliés
en "série", l'impédance totale est la somme de l'impédance de chacun des hautparleurs. .

L'enceinte HX112 est équipée d'une double bobine
novatrice permettant de sélectionner l'impédance de
4 ou 8 Ohms. Le sélecteur d'impédance est situé en
face arrière. Si l'amplicateur nécessite une impédance minimale de 4 Ohms, réglez l'impédance de la
HX112 sur 4 Ohms pour extraire la puissance maximale de votre amplicateur. Si vous
souhaitez utiliser deux HX112 en parallèle, pour une impédance totale de 4 Ohms,
ou si vous ajoutez une HX112 à votre conguration existante, réglez le sélecteur
d'impédance sur 8 Ohms.
