Theory behind the Tachymaster, using the example of the Tachymaster 50
At a stipulated average speed of 50 km/h, the vehicle covers 13.888 m/sec. It therefore needs 36 seconds to cover a distance of 500 m. The Tachymaster 50 has been designed in such a way that the measuring hand also takes precisely 36 seconds to complete one revolution.
The arrangement of the dial shows distances rather than time segments. On all Tachymasters, one revolution equates to 500 m, and the reading is accurate to less than 2 m. The total number of complete kilometres which have already been covered is shown by the small hand positioned below the 500 mark.
Special rally stages are therefore immediately
visible up to a distance of 30 km.
This description also applies to the Tachymaster 30 and the Tachymaster 40. (Average speed 8.333 m/sec. respectively
11.111 m/sec.; revolution 60 seconds respectively 45 seconds)

Using the Tachymaster
Remember to always wind up your Tachymaster
completely before you start taking a series of measurements in order to ensure maximum accuracy. At the beginning of a special stage with an average speed of 30, 40 or 50 km/h, start the Tachymaster by pressing the crown,
beginning at the zero setting. Make sure that
your odometer is also set to 000 m.
Once you have started the stage, you only need
to use the right-hand button. You must also
ensure that both the black measuring hand and the red drag indicator are in sync when you start taking the measurement. If the red drag
indicator stays in the zero position, you simply need to press the right-hand button once to
synchronise it with the measuring hand.
6
Now concentrate entirely on your odometer. When you have reached a chosen distance from the starting point – for the sake of convenience, however, every 100 or 200 m –
press the right-hand button. If the drag
indicator is now ahead of the distance displayed on the odometer, you have overshot the stipulated section and are driving too fast. If the drag indicator is behind the displayed distance, you are driving too slowly. By pressing
the right-hand button a second time, you can
speed up the drag indicator in line with the odometer and the Tachymaster is ready for the next split time measurement.
Press the crown to stop the watch, and press
the left-hand button to reset the hands to zero. This button is coloured in characteristic
Hanhart red to prevent any confusion.
