Introduction
Hand Held Products'
71 Memory Modules
(M/M's)
are
a very
powerfulenhancement
for the
Hewlett-Packard
HP-7I computer.
The
71
M/M's are available rn the
following
configurations:
.
Random Access
Memory
(RAM)expansion.
Hand
Held Products
provides
your
choice
of 32K,64K, or
96 Kbyte RAM expansion.
.
Erasable
Programmable Read-Only Memory
(EPROM)
expansion. The EPROM carrier versions
of the
71 M/M's allow
you
to
address up to
32
Kbytes of software in EPROM.
.
RAM/EPROM expansion. The
32KRAM132K
EPROM version
of
the
M/M's
provides
32K
of RAM
as
wellas up to 32Kof EPROM.
As
you
can see, the addition of Hand Held
Products' 71 Memory Modules dramatically increases the memory
of
your
HP-7I computer. Installation
of any of
the77
M/M's
transforms the
HP-71 into a
powerhouse
and can open up a new world
of opportunity
for
HP-71
users.

Note:
¡
As with
any
plug-in
module,
there is
a chance
of
memory
loss in the
HP-71
when installing
a
71
M/M.
Hand
Held Products
has incorporated
several
features
within theTI
M/M's to minimize
this
occurrence,
however
memory
loss may
still
occur
upon initialinstallation.
We recommend
back-up
of
allfiles
before removing
or installing
any module.
.
Be
careful
not to
press
any keys
on the
HP-71 when
installing
aTIMlM.

in two
ways:

RAM M/M is
installed,
you
have
instantly
added 32K,64K, or 96Kbytes
of RAM
to
your
HP-

This
additional
memory becomes a
part
of Main
RAM in
your
HP-71. A simple

lndependent Memory
Your increased
memory can also
be
partitioned
or
placed
in
independent RAM. The
additionalmemory

resides in
port
5 of
the HP-7I. The 32K
RAM, 64K
RAM, and 96K RAM
M/M's can be
partitioned
in
32K
increments and are addressed
in the following
locations:
32K....."..port
5.0
64K... . ..port 5.0 and
5.01
96K... . . .ports 5.0,
5.01, and 5.02
To show
the amount of additional
RAM when
partitioned,
type SHOWPORT

Execution of
the
SHOWPORT
command will
display the
port
number where
the
additional
memory resides, memory capacity
in bytes, and a
memory type of
"1"
indicating independent RAM.
Note:
Other
independent memory configurations
in
increments of
32K
are available. Consult
Hand Held
Products for
further information.

by the HP-71's

with
your

is
extremely
important
with
regard to the battery
life
of
your
32K
RAM and
64K
RAM Memory Module. The cover should
be
placed
on
the
M/M
immediately upon the removal
of
the module from the HP-71and must remain
on
the module
at all
times when not installed
in
the HP-71.
Page 10
¡
Battery Life Your 64K battery
backed-up M/M should retain its
memory
for approximately
13 months while
your
32K battery backed-up
M/M willretain it's memory
for
approximately 29 months.
These
figures
are
based
upon
"worst-case"
conditions.
That
condition
would have the
M/M
"sitting
on
the
shelf'with the
cover intact
and
never
being installed in the HP-71.
Under
normal
use
i.e.
being installed in the
HP-71far
more
frequently,
your
battery backed-up
M/M will
retain its
memory ever longer.
Once again, to
maximize
the life of the
battery,
the
snap-on
cover must
be on the M/M
any
time
the
Module is
outside the
HP-71.
Note: "Normal
use"
is
considered as leaving the
M/M inside
the HP-71
approximately 80o/o
of
the time.
Under this
condition
your
battery life should
extend up to 5
years.
It
is
a simple task to replace
the battery in
your
M/M.
The only material
necessary is
a 71 M/M
Battery Replacement
Assembly which
comes complete
with everything
you

and can be installed in

M/M's
are
enclosed in
plastic
cases

have
been
designed
to
allow
easy access inside

a

adhesive
tape
which
acts as
a

the
case.
Do not
remove
the tape-the
case
opens
at the
opposite
end. To

case should now
be open.
o
Installing the EPROM
You may install
up
to
32K of EPROM in
your

EPROM
Carrier.
The following EPROM may
be
used:

compatible,
CMOS,
27256,
27 I28, 27 64, 200 nanosecond
or
faster.
To install
a32K EPROM, the'jumper"
should
remain
on the
pins
marked
A and B in the
photo-
graph.
To installa 16K
or smaller EPROM, simply lift
the
jumper
off of the
pins
marked
A and B and

the
jumper
over

pins
marked B and

of
the EPROM
should be
oriented
to the
left or'jumper side" of the
Carrier.

the
EPROM seated in

Addressing
the memory

of the

EPROM
is
addressed
in
port
5.0. In the
32K
RAM/32K
EPROM
M/M the
EPROM
is
addressed
in
port
5.0
and the
RAM
is in
port
5.01.
o
Note: The
EPROM
Carrier
always
occupies
32K of
memory
space,
regardless
of the
size
EPROM
actually
used.
.
The
snap-on
cover
which
comes
with
your
TIMIM
should
remain
on
allthe
Modules
when
they
are not
installed
in the
HP-71.
The

protects
your

against

discharge
as
well
as
extends
the

life
of
the
32K and
64K
RAM
M/M's.
