Explanation o f jacks and cables
The jacks on the back of your receiver (shown above) and the cables shown below are used to connect to ot her components. The video jacks are OU T jacks, which need to be connected to IN jacks on the T V or monitor you’re connecting to (so the video content goes from the receiver to the screen). The audio jacks are IN jacks, w hich need to be connected to OUT jacks on the component you’re connecting to, so the sound from the component comes into the receiver (and ou t through t he speakers).
Video cables
Composite video cable (included)
The basic Video jack (usually color-coded yellow) is also referred to as composite video.
S-VIDEO cable (not included)
The S-VIDEO (separate video) jack provides bet ter picture quality t han composi te video (the VIDE O jack) because t he color is kep t separate from the brightness and chroma par t of the video signal .
Component video cables (Pr, Pb, Y) (not included)
The Y, Pb, Pr jacks provide optimum picture quali ty by separa ting the video signal in to three parts. To ensure maximum picture qualit y, use three video- grade

cables for the connection. You can also buy bundled component v ideo cables that are colorcoded to match the Y, Pb, Pr inputs (green, blue and red) .
Audio cables (not included) AUDIO IN L (lef t) and AUDIO IN R (right)
These jacks and cables are of ten color-coded (red for right audio, and whi te for left audio).
HDMI connector and cable (not included)
HDMI (High-Defi nition Multimedia Interface) provides optimum digital video and audio qualit y. Use an HDMI cable to connect to a HDMI-supported monitor to allow transfer of t he digital images of DVD video and the stereo sound. If your television is a high defi nit ion telev ision, use the DV D player’s HDMI out put to get the highest possible video resolution. Set t he HDMI op tion in the Video menu to swi tch on. (See page 21 and 2 2) T he HDMI indicator will light up on the fron t panel.
Note:
• If your television is a high defi nit ion telev ision, use the DV D player’s progressive scan output to get the highest possible video resolu tion. Set the Progressive Scan option in t he Video menu to On.
• If one of the devices is not working, check that all the cables have been inser ted properly into t he jacks.
• If your component has onl y one input for audio (mono), connect it to t he left (white L/Mono) audio jack on the TV and don’t connect the right audio part of the cable.
HDMI
Connecting the speakers
Six speakers are provided with the unit (2 front , 1 center, 2 rear, 1 subwoofer). To achieve good surround effects, all six speakers need to be connected to the receiver.
One speaker wire is provided with each speaker. Speaker wires are color-coded to match the terminals. When connecting subwoofer, connect subwoofer
control cable to the unit’s rear panel fi rst, then press the power switch on the subwoofer speaker to switch it on.
Note:
When connecting t he speakers, make sure the polari ties (“+” speaker wire to “+” on the receiver. For example, red wire to red terminal on the receiver) of speaker wires and terminals match. If t he cords are reversed, the sound will be distorted. Do not ground the output line, it will damage the speaker.

1. Lef t, Right (Front Speakers)
Fron t speakers car ry primarily music and sound effects.
2. Center
In surround mode, the center speaker carries most of the dialog as well as music and effect s. It should be set between t he left and righ t speakers.
3. Surround (Rear Speakers)
The rear speakers’ overall sound balance should be as close as possible to the fron t speakers. Proper placement is vital to es tablish an evenly dist ributed sound fi eld.
Subwoofer
A subwoofer is designed to reproduce powerful low bass effect s (explosions, the rumble of spaceships, etc.) which dramat icall y heighten the action on the screen.
Magnetic shielding
Speaker s placed less than two fee t from the T V set must be magnetically shielded in order to prevent picture distor tion. Front, Center and Rear speakers provided with this unit are magnetically shielded to protect your TV set .
Note:
Place the subwoofer a foot or more away from T V when using the Front Surround sound Ef fect. (FSsE). (See page 11)
Front speaker placement
Follow the sugges tions for speaker placement below t o get the bes t result s.
Alignment
Align the center speaker evenly with (A) or slightly behind (B) (the left and righ t speakers), but not ahead of them.
Angle
Place the lef t and right speakers to form a 45 degree angle with your favori te viewing position to duplicate the soundtrack mixer ’s perspective.
Height
The mid- and high-f requency drivers of the three front speakers should be as close as possible to the same heigh t. T his oft en requires placing t he center speaker directly on top ( A) or beneath (B) the T V set .
Preferred surround placement
Location
If possible, place sur- round speaker s to ei ther side of the listening area, not behind it.
Height
If space permi ts, install surround speakers 2-3 feet above viewers. This helps to minimize localization ef fects.
00055454bda_GB.indd Abs2:900055454bda_GB.indd Abs2:9 06.08.2007 16:07:52 Uhr06.08.2007 16:07:52 Uhr
10
Aiming
Aim surround speakers straight across the room, not down at viewers, to help create a more open, spacious surround sound fi eld.
Alternative Surround Placement
Rear wall
If rear wall mounting is the only choice, aim the speakers at each other (A), towards the front (B) or towards the sidewalls (C, D). E xperiment with placement until sounds seem to surround you, rather than come from behind you.
No adjacent walls
Surround speakers can go on stands facing each other to approximate sidewall mounting (A), or to the sides or rear of t he viewing area, aimed upwards; they can go r ight on the fl oor, or preferabl y, a few feet off the fl oor such as on end tables (B).
Front Surround Mode Speaker Placement
Confi guration 1
Follow the sugges tion for speaker placement on page 9 and 10 .
Confi guration 2
If placing the rear speakers (surround speakers) at the back is not a good choice for you, you can use the Front Surround sound Effect(F SsE). F ollow the follow ing instruction for sett ing the speakers and the setup menu of the Player.
1. Setting the Speakers
Mounting the Speakers
1. Place the front speaker upside dow n.
2. Slide in the hinge to the bot tom of the front speaker until the ‘click’ sound is heard.

4. At tach the four rubber feet prov ided to the top of t he front speaker.
Note:
Match t he front left and rear lef t speakers together and match the front right and rear right speakers together.
Adjusting the Angle of the Speakers
To achieve the best Fron t Surround sound E ffect (FSsE), adjus t the mounted front left and the rear lef t speakers to the left for an angle of 2 5o - 4 5o from t he center. Adjus t the mounted front right and rear right speakers to the right in the same way.

Test tone/Channel balance
Channel balance
Your recei ver is equipped with a test signal genera tor for balancing the channels. A s the signal “travels” from channel to channel, adjust the level controls until each channel plays at the same loudness level (see page 2 1).
00055454bda_GB.indd Abs2:1100055454bda_GB.indd Abs2:11 06.08.2007 16:07:53 Uhr06.08.2007 16:07:53 Uhr
12
Level adjustment and surround channel level expectation
Even though you adjust the surround channel to be as loud as the other s on the test signal, on actual program material t he surround channel is usuall y much lower than the fron t. Don’t readjust the surround level; program producers use surround for subtle at mospherics and ambience, and only rarely for special e ffect s.

DVD-R,DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
Most DVD-R and DVD +R (one recording only), DVD-RW and DV D+RW discs (rewri table), depending on the DVD wri ter and discs used. Recordings using DV D-R and DVD-R W discs must be made in V ideo DVD mode. Recordings using DV D+RW discs mus t be made in accordance with t he specifi cations for DVD+R W discs with a 4.7 GB capaci ty.
VCD - Video Compact Disc
CD on which you can record up to 74 min. of VHS quali ty video associated wit h st ill images, audio tracks and interactive menus.
SVCD - Super Video Compact Disc
Most SVCDs comply with the IEC62107 standard. SVCDs can be used to record up to 70 minutes of digital sound and images in accordance wit h MPE G-2 standards for video and MPEG-1 standards for audio.
Audio CDs
Audio C Ds (12 cm).
CD-R, CD-RW
Most CD-R (one recording only) and CD-R W discs (rewritable).
CD-Rs writ ten during a multisession recording can be played, provided that the session has ended before the disc is played (depending on the write sof tware). However, depending on the condition of the CD-wri ter, computer and the disc used, you may fi nd that not all discs will play. When playing a CD-R disc, it is normal for the unit to take up to 20 seconds to recognize the disc before star ting to play.
If the disc is not recognized af ter a period of 20 seconds, remove the disc, and insert i t again.
• Do not use its full capaci ty.
• CD-Rs should be preferably used instead of CDR Ws (rewritable CDs) as, in cer tain cases, CDR W playback may be fault y.
• Use reliable, good-qualit y CD write sof tware.
• Close all other applica tions on the computer t o ensure reliable CD-R disc recording.
Mp3 fi les
CD-R and CD-RW discs containing audio fi les in mp3 format. For CD-R mp 3 discs, please follow all the recommendations for CD-R, along wit h the commen ts below :
• Your mp3 fi les should be ISO 9 660 or JOLIE T format. ISO 9 660 format and Joliet mp3 fi les are compatible wi th Microsof t’s DOS and Windows, as well as with Apple Mac.
• Mp3 fi lenames should not exceed 8 characters, and should end with the “.mp3” extension. General name format: Title.mp3. When composing your title, use 10 characters or less, no spaces, and avoid the use of special charact ers including (. , / , \ , = ,+).
• The total number of fi les on a disc should be less than 400.
• Use a decompression transfer rate of at least 128 kB/sec (kilobytes/second) when recording mp3 fi les. Sound qualit y with mp3 fi les basically depends on t he rate of compression/ decompression you choose. Obt aining audio CD quality sound requires an analog /digital sampling rate, that is conversion to mp3 format, of at least 12 8 kB/sec and up to 16 0 kB/sec. Choosing higher rat es, such as 192 kB/sec or more, only rarely produces even bet ter sound qualit y. Conversely, fi les with sampling rates below 128 kB/sec will not play properly.
• Do not record copyrigh t-protected mp3 fi les. “Securized” fi les are encr ypted and code protected to prevent illegal copying.
Important:
The above recommendations do no t guarantee that t he DV D player will play mp3 recordings, or as an assurance of sound quality. Certain technologies and methods for mp3 fi le recording on CD- Rs prevent optimal playback of these fi les on your DVD player (i .e. degraded sound quality and in some cases , inability of the player to read the fi le).
