Summary: Designer’s concept
For 25 years, I’d thought of the ideal loudspeaker for an apartment or bedroom—a slender tower, capable of playing at a whisper with wonderful sound—projecting voices and highs clearly across a wide angle. Since it was my fantasy, I imagined it could also be used in a very large room and nearly shake the walls. What I sought the most was a design that could also be placed close to walls without sonic penalty.

In 2004, I began the final work for the Pico Mideo. First, a slim tower can use only a small woofer. For the large room, this woofer would be asked to stroke very hard, and thus couldn’t reproduce any of the voice range, to keep distortion low and clarity high. The Mideo would thus be a three-way. When one woofer is placed close to the floor, you hear two—the real one, and its reflection in the floor—which makes for a louder and lower bass response. Other research identified an ideal amount of cabinet surface around the woofer that would also help its bass response, yet remain small enough to ‘get out of the way’ at all other frequencies, for less interference. The result is the Mideo’s ideal cabinet shape. It’s only 9.5 inches wide.
The mathematics I developed for the Continuum 3 showed the Mideo’s midrange driver needed to be a ‘5¼-inch’ size to meet the woofer. This size of driver has no difficulty putting out sound in middle and lower voice range in all directions, which is exactly what I didn’t want it to do. Those sounds would reflect off nearby walls and the cabinet itself. The solution was to create a shape for the Q-Stone enclosure around that driver to allow voice-range sounds to expand and become trapped in thick acoustic foam between the enclosure and the sides of the cabinet. This same technique was used for the tweeter as well. As one moves behind the front edge of the cabinet, voices and treble become very, very soft, so any surface near the speakers reflects less sound.
As with all of our loudspeakers, the woofer, midrange driver, and tweeter move together in perfect timing, so you hear only one wave from them, not three. This requires a special but simple, Balanced-Phase first-order crossover circuit and the very finest drivers. The Mideo also incorporates our Soundfield Convergence adjustability, so you may focus the best sound in your unique listening environment. When the Mideo was finished,

my dream had become reality. What do they say? That you can’t have it unless you can dream it?
