Summary: Designer’s concept
Within two months of the Callisto’s debut, the Europa Max was born. It’s a marriage
between the Callisto’s woofer, tweeter, and crossover circuit and a Europa cabinet.
That new crossover circuit could have only been developed using the Callisto’s cabinet,
so I could hear exactly how to fine-tune it. Only then could those parts be moved into
a Europa cabinet and the differences assessed to see if this was a worthwhile venture.
The first thing I heard was that the bass had more impact. Textures of voices and
instruments were more clear and the treble positively sparkled. Dynamics were more
effortlessly alive, even when heard from another room. The Max is louder at the
same volume setting and also handles more power than the Europa. It plays far
louder than Europas—enough to fill a large room. For all these differences to be
heard, the basic design of the Europa’s Q-Stone™ cast marble cabinet proved itself.
The drivers are very special, with a woofer that maintains very low distortion—no
matter how hard it’s driven or what note is played—from the lowest bass to the highvoice range. No other woofer comes close to this level of performance. The tweeter
itself is unique in its ability to go very high—beyond audibility without ringing—thanks
to its very light, treated linen dome. It goes very low with ease, because of its special
suspension—it’s extremely flexible and responds, microscopically, to the most delicate
of signals. As with the Europa, a soft, absorbent wool felt surrounds the tweeter to
prevent reflections and more is used to limit the dispersion of the high-voice and
treble directly to the sides, and up and down the face of the speaker—a feature
especially necessary for small rooms. The crossover circuit feeding both drivers passes
the high and low signals through at the same instant, so both drivers can move as if
they were one unit. Only our Balanced-Phase™ ‘first-order’ crossover circuit provides
the precise timing that lets us hear the music, not a separate woofer and tweeter.

for it achieves all of the goals needed in a speaker that can be kept for life.
