Summary: Designer’s concept
Europa was introduced in the fall of 2001 and, along with other breakthrough advancements, was the first speaker to have an all-cast marble cabinet. Breakthroughs in its circuit design led to the most perfectly-synchronized motion between the woofer and tweeter that had ever been achieved. This method of engineering circuits is still used for every model we manufacture. It’s the only circuit which allows the signals to pass through with no unnecessary time delays and feeds both drivers (woofer and tweeter) at the same instant. After installing the drivers and new crossover circuit into the cabinet, I sat down for a good listen. The increase in bass was shocking. The marble’s rigidity and its airtight nature proved their worth.
The Europa’s unique woofer was first installed in 1998 in its forerunner, the Continuum 0.5 bookshelf speaker, and has been included in several other models since then. It remains unsurpassed in its ability to play both very softly and very loud—with very-low distortion—because of its patented neodymium magnet structure, supple suspension, and light, rigid cone. The Europa’s tweeter is one of the few that don’t depend on reflections from cabinet surfaces around it to produce a proper tone balance. Thus, it’s surrounded with a very absorbent pure wool felt. Sounds from the tweeter leave very quickly, cleanly, and delicately. The tweeter’s treated dome is light, rigid, and doesn’t ring. Its unusual suspension is very soft and flexible and reproduces the smallest of sounds.
Once the sound finally leaves a cabinet, it travels towards the listener and changes little along the journey. We take advantage of the final opportunity to further control the sound waves by placing an arrangement of wool felt near the woofer and tweeter. This keeps the Europa from talking directly to the walls next to it and allows more freedom in speaker placement. The most important aspect is that the listener should never hear the woofer’s and tweeter’s sounds separately in time. One should hear only one ‘driver’ moving back and forth—or one ‘source,’ for the most clarity. Ears are very sensitive to time delays, and even small deviations from ‘time-coherent,’ or synchronous, motion of the woofer and tweeter tell our ears that the speakers are ‘speakers’ and not the real thing.
The woofer and tweeter move as one unit because our revolutionary, Balanced-Phase ‘first-order’ crossover circuit delivers their signals with no delays. The drivers truly mimic each other in their entire transition zone. A speaker is a simple system and when all of its parts move together as well as they do in the Europa, one hears everything recorded in the original source material—in the way it was intended to be heard. I’m honored to offer to you such stellar, time-coherent clarity.

This was accomplished with a unique arrangement of special acoustic fiberglass inside, and by its improved crossover circuit. As a result, the best sound quality is always obtained from the amplifier and long speaker wires may be used. USA pair pricing $995, available factory-direct only. Add shipping, applicable* fees.
