GUIDE FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
This Guide describes GreenGuard® Building Wraps and their intended use in
commercial construction applications. Such use involves the installation of
these products in wall systems in combination with various types of exterior wall
sheathings and exterior coverings such as brick, stone, exterior insulation nish
systems (EIFS), conventional stucco, vinyl, ber cement, wood, etc.
This Guide is intended to provide installation guidelines for the use of
GreenGuard® Building Wraps in commercial construction applications where
they perform as both an air barrier and water-resistive barrier. These guidelines
are not intended to address all possible combinations of construction materials
that may be used in a wall system. For this reason, the installation information
provided is intended only as a guide and is for the convenience of contractors,
speciers, and other interested parties. The nal application and details are the
sole responsibility of the design authority on record for the project.
2.0 INDUSTRY STANDARDS/CODE COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
GreenGuard® Building Wraps meet and, in most cases, exceed the compliance
requirements of all applicable building codes and industry standards.
Go to www.TrustGreeenGuard.com for the most current compliance information.
Building codes typically require the use of a water-resistive barrier (WRB) in all
exterior walls that is at least equivalent to Grade D building paper. Applications
involving the use of a cementitious base coat or exterior covering, such as
adhered veneers, conventional stucco coatings and exterior insulation nish
systems (EIFS) require the use of two layers of Grade D or equivalent building
paper/wrap. This can be accomplished by rst installing a layer of GreenGuard
Building Wrap followed by a layer of Grade D building paper (Type 15).
GreenGuard® Building Wraps are recognized by the Air Barrier Association of
America (AABA, www. airbarrier.org) as air barrier materials that comply with
industry standards. They are also certied for compliance with the National Green
Building Standard (NGSB) by the NAHB Home Innovation Research Lab (www.
HomeInnovation.com/green, Certicate #00137).

3.0 PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS
GreenGuard® Building Wraps are polyolen products that are designed specically
for the applications shown in this Guide. These products perform as both a waterresistive barrier and an air barrier material when installed in accordance with the
information in this Guide.

BUILDING WRAP AND FLASHING INSTALLATION
4.0 FASTENERS AND FASTENING OPTIONS
GreenGuard® Building Wraps are mechanically attached either through structural sheathing
board or insulation board to underlying vertical framing members or directly to framing
members. For installation of GreenGuard® Building Wraps in residential or light commercial
building applications involving installation on structures that are less than 40 feet (5
stories) in height, refer to the GreenGuard® "Residential and Light Commercial Installation
Guide for GreenGuard® Building Wraps".

Note: When attaching wall ties for anchoring masonry exterior claddings, rst install a patch
of GreenGuard® Flashing at the penetration site before installing the wall tie. The patch
should be of a size adequate to seal only the penetration points.
5.0 FLASHINGS AND JOINT/SEAM SEALING
PRODUCTS
GreenGuard® Butyl Flashing Products
GreenGuard® Butyl Flashings are self-adhering membranes that have a butyl rubber
adhesive. These products are designed for use in sealing around window and door
openings, roof/wall intersections, deck/porch attachments to walls, pipe penetrations and
other areas that require a waterproof seal. GreenGuard® Butyl Flashings are designed
for sealing straight openings, while GreenGuard® SuperStretch™ Flashing is designed for
sealing around curved openings.
GreenGuard® Seam Tape (Custom)
GreenGuard® Custom Seam Tape is an adhesive tape that is used to seal building wrap
seams, repairs and around various types of wall penetrations that do not require a selfadhering ashing membrane.

GUIDE FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
6.0 GENERAL INSTALLATION OF GREENGUARD® BUILDING WRAPS
The following guidelines should be used when installing GreenGuard® Building Wraps
on exterior walls (see Figure 6.1):
Note: Alternative installation details may be used if approved in writing
by Pactiv Building Products prior to installation.
A. Install building wrap over structural sheathing board, over
foam plastic insulation board with fasteners extending through
insulation into framing members, over exterior gypsum board or
directly to framing members.
B. Begin by aligning the bottom edge of the roll with the base of the
wall, approximately 12 inches around the inside or outside corner
of the wall. The building wrap should overlap through-wall
ashing by a minimum of 6 inches. If no through-wall ashing is
being used, then the bottom edge of the building wrap should
overlap the sill plate at least 2 inches and should be sealed
using seam tape or an adhesive.
C. Unroll the building wrap with the printed side out, wrapping the
entire building, including window and door rough openings. Make
sure that upper courses of building wrap overlap lower courses
in water-shedding fashion. Vertical and horizontal seams must be
overlapped a minimum of 6 inches (vertical) and 2 inches
(horizontal), unless otherwise specied for a particular
application.
All building wrap seams must be taped using 3-inch wide
GreenGuard® Custom Seam Tape or an equivalent tape
approved by Pactiv. See Section 14.5 for an alternative method
of sealing building wrap seams. Ensure that building wrap
surfaces are clean and dry before taping seams. Press tape rmly
as it is applied to the building wrap.
D. Install fasteners based on the required minimum spacing
described in Section 4.0 of this Guide.
E. Fasteners must penetrate the nail base or stud a minimum
of ¾ inch.
F. Do not install fasteners within 6 inches of the sill at window
openings and around door openings. In addition, do not install
fasteners within 9 inches of a window or door head.
G. Make a modied “I” cut through the building wrap at window
openings. Fold excess material to the inside of the rough opening,
trim, and secure to a framing member. Make diagonal cuts at the
corners of the window head, fold the building wrap up, and
temporarily secure it to the wall with a small piece of tape. This
piece will be folded down over the head ashing during the window
installation (see Section 7.0 of this Guide). Note: The nal
fenestration and ashing details are the sole responsibility of the
design authority on record for the project. Follow the window
manufacturer’s installation instructions to avoid potential issues
relating to the window warranty. (see Section 7.0 of the Guide.)
H. Seal around all wall penetrations using GreenGuard® Butyl
Flashings or other self-adhering ashings approved by Pactiv (see
Section 7.0 for Flashing Installation Details and Sections 9.0 -
14.0 for Sealing at Terminations and Penetrations).
