Calibration
Great Plains Mfg., Inc.
Note: For calibration procedure please check your
drills operator’s manual and the instructions below.
Refer to Figure 15
1. To perform calibration on the small seeds, remove the spring clip pin (a) in the drive assembly. Place the larger calibration crank
handle (b) over the drive assembly and follow
the procedure described in Checking the
Seeding Rate below or in the operator’s manual.
2. To perform calibrationon the mainseed meter
drive only, remove the spring clip pin (a) from
the drive assembly. Place the smaller calibration crank handle (c) over the drive assembly
and follow the procedure described In Checking the Seeding Rate below or in the operator’s manual.
Note: When drilling with the main drill box and you
do not want the small seeds drive to operate you
can pull spring clip pin (a) from the drive assembly
or you can remove the plastic guard and disconnect the drive chain.

Checking the Seeding Rate
The following procedure should be followed to
calibrate the drill for small seed types. Note that
the following factors may affect seeding accuracy:
• Errors in land area which are affected by
wheel slip, operator judgement and by inaccurate knowledge of field size.
• Errors in metering which are affected by seed
treatments, seed size, variety, moisture content and seed bulk density.
To calibrate the drill, an accurate set of scales will
be required. Other equipment is supplied with the
drill and includes calibration trays and handle.
Procedure
Refer to Figure 16
1. Release the two black plastic lock screws
above each venturi unit by loosening, sliding
the knob up and re-tightening.
2. Push the left and right venturi units forward to
clear the feed units.

3. Remove calibration tray (a) from storage position
above the feed rollers by loosening center knob (b)
and sliding lock tab down.
Refer to Figure 18
4. Position the calibration trays under the feed rollers.
5. Ensure that the drill is not in a tramlining bout so that
all the feed rollers turn when the seed shaft is rotating.
6. Fill the hopper with enough seed to ensure that all the
feed rollers are covered throughout the test.

7. Remove the spring clip pin (a) and place the large
crank handle (b) over the drive assembly and rotate
clockwise (c) to “prime” the feed mechanism. It is important to turn the handle at least 50 turns before calibrating to ensure seed is flowing correctly through the
system. Empty the calibration trays before carrying
out a full test.
8. Rotate the crank handle clockwise (c) 41 turns. (For
extra accuracy it is recommended to carry out a Calibrations for Number of Turns, described on the next
page).
9. Weigh the seed collected from both trays in pounds.
Use an accurate set of scales. This amount is equivalent to 1/10th acre.
Seeding Rate (lb/ac)=Weight Collected (lb) x 10
10. If the result is different to the required rate, adjust the
seed rate handle for the small seeds box to increase
or decrease the seeding rate. Remember to re-prime
the feed mechanism with at least 50 turns before recalibrating.

Calibrations for Number of Turns
As indicated at the start of this section, accuracy
in calibration can be affected by a number of factors not least of which is soil type, wheel slip and
sinkage. The number of turns recommended for
the calibration crank handle are based on “average” figures in normal field conditions. If farm
conditions are very stony (so little sinkage) or very
sandy (so greater sinkage) then using the recommended number of crank handle turns may be
inaccurate.
To check the number of turns for individual field
conditions:
Refer to Figure 20
1. Shut down the shut-off slide above each roller
to prevent seeding.
2. Fill the small seeds box half to two-thirds full
of seed.
3. Mark out 218 feet of seedbed.
4. Position the calibration handle on the Variator
input and rotate to the upright (12 o’clock) position to give a clear starting point.
5. Drive the distance marked-off in the seedbed
and count the number of turns the calibration
handle makes.
6. Note the number of turns and use this figure
in the Checking the Seeding Rate procedure
in the previous section in place of the standard.
Note: Many small and light weight seeds do not
flow well, therefore Great Plains highly recommends the use of talc lubricant with all seeds. It
may also be necessary to add talc lubricant to the
box sides and seed hoses. For proper talc lubricant contact your Great Plains dealer and ask for
talc lubricant P/N: 821-046C.
Great Plains Mfg., Inc.
19934
Figure 20
Individual Shut Off
Talc Lubricant (P/N: 821-046C)
IMPORTANT!
All talc is not created equal, use Great Plains brand talc
for optimum seed flow.
Talc lubricant is mandatory for all seeds, especially
treated or inoculated seed.
Recommended usage:
For clean seeds sprinkle (1) one cup of talc per 3
bushels of seed.
For seed with excessive treatment, or for humid planting
environments, double or triple talc rate as needed.
!
Do not use hands or any part of your body to mix talc
lubricant.

Small Seeds Attachment
To set and calibrate the seeding rate on the optional small
seeds attachment, follow these steps.
Refer to Figure 21
b
1. Set the seed rate indicator (a) on the small seeds attachment as indicated by the Small Seeds Rate Chart,
this page. The seed rate indicator (a) for the small
seeds attachment can be adjusted by rotating the
metal crank handle (b).
2. Loosen the wing nuts and rotate the handle until the
indicator is at desired setting. Retighten wing nuts.
Note: Use the right side of the indicator to align with the
a
desired number from the seed rate chart.
3. Calibrate the small seeds attachment to your material
by following the steps under Checking the Seeding
Rate on page 8.
