Operating instructions for the model U-16 Emden, Order No. 92303
Description of the original
The German Navy's U-16 submarine served as the design for this model. The model's length was shortened and a stern thruster was installed to optimize the model's maneuverability.
Model description
The submarine's real static dive function is accomplished with a hoist motor that controls a ballast tank. The boat begins to submerge due to its increased weight. Surfacing takes place by the opposite effect. This makes it possible for the model to be suspended in water. Curved travel is accomplished by way of a small traverse thruster at the model's stern. This makes it possible for the model to turn in-place. The drive battery can be quickly and easily recharged because the switch socket is also the charger socket. The submarine's small size makes it possible to operate it without difficulty in a bathtub or a rather large aquarium tank.
Technical data
Length, about 132 mm Breath, about 33 mm Height, about 50 mm Total weight with RC, about 85 g Maximum diving depth, about 0.5 m
Important safety notices
This is a model that – together with appropriate accessories – can become a functional RC model. GRAUPNER/SJ cannot monitor adherence to the assembly and operating instructions for the model nor can GRAUPNER/SJ supervise the installation, operation or maintenance of the model and its components. Therefore GRAUPNER/SJ accepts no liability whatsoever for losses, damage or costs that arise from improper operation, improper behavior or which are associated with same in any manner. Unless mandated by prevailing law, the obligation of the GRAUPNER/SJ company to provide damage compensation arising from the use of the model, regardless of the grounds, is excluded (this exclusion includes personal injury, death, damage to buildings or structures as well as sales and business losses, consequential damage for business interruption or other direct and indirect consequential damages). Total liability under all circumstances and in each case is limited to the amount actually paid for this model.

The commissioning and operation of the model is solely at the risk of the operator. Only cautious, considered handling during operation of the model will prevent personal injuries and property damage.
Before operating the model for the first time, check if your private liability insurance provides coverage for model ships of this type. If this is not the case, obtain special liability insurance coverage for RC models. These safety instructions must be kept and, if the model is sold, passed on the purchaser.
Guarantee terms
The guarantee provides for the free-of-charge repair or replacement of parts which exhibit proven manufacturing or material defects within the 24 month guarantee period that begins with the date of purchase. Further reaching claims are excluded. Freight, packaging and travel expenses must be borne by the purchaser. No liability is accepted for transport damage. A factual description of the fault or defect as well as proof of purchase which shows the purchase date must be enclosed with the return shipment to GRAUPNER/SJ or its service center responsible for the given country. The guarantee is void if the failure of the part or the model was caused by an accident, improper handling or incorrect usage.
The following points must absolutely be observed:
This model is not suitable for children under 14 years of age.  The model is to be operated with caution if persons and/or animals are in the water. Always maintain an
adequate distance between the model and persons or animals.
Basically we recommend operation of the model only in clean bodies of water (i.e. where there are no solids
floating in the water such as algae, leaves, branches, etc) where visibility through the water is good down to the bottom and there are no water plants in which the boat can become entangled. Operation in small swimming pools which are not too deep, large clean aquariums and bathtubs can be recommended. There should always be a readily available option for recovering the model without the need for a person to get into the water.
Never allow the model to dive too deeply as this could cause its loss. We recommend that dives be
restricted to the limit of visibility but which does not exceed a maximum depth of 0.5 m.
Do not operate the model in nature reserves, landscape protection areas or water conservation areas. Ask
local authorities about the water bodies where operating model ships is permitted.
Never operate the model in saltwater.  Never operate the model in adverse weather conditions like rain, storms, strong wind, high waves or water
currents etc.
Never attempt to recharge the power supply's dry-cell (i.e. primary cell) batteries. Only rechargeable (i.e.
secondary cell) batteries may be charged.
The use of comparable rechargeable batteries is at one's own discretion and is not recommended by
GRAUPNER/SJ. Only dry-cell batteries of the 9 V block type or BABY should be inserted into the transmitter and charger power supply.
Check the model for reliable response to the remote control unit before operating the model.  The remote control unit's effective range must be checked prior to operation of the model. Do this by moving
with the transmitter about 5 m away from the switched-on model. At this distance it must be possible to operate all model functions without any problem.
Check if the 27.145 MHz radio frequency is free. Never operate the model if it is not sure that the radio
frequency is free.
Be aware that radio devices, other remote control units in the 27 MHz range or transmission equipment can
strongly interfere with the model's functionality. Try to ensure that such devices are not operated in the vicinity while the model is being operated.
Particles suspended in the water must not get into the ballast tank through the intake opening as this could
block the mechanics and overload adjustment mechanisms.
Pay attention to the smooth, free movement of all drive components. This is particularly applicable while the
model is operating because leaves and other things in the water can become entangled in the drive components. If this should happen, the motors and/or speed regulator can be destroyed by overload conditions.
Batteries must never be short-circuited or come into direct contact with water.  The charger has a time-controlled switch-off. The battery charging process must be monitored. The
charging process may not be done repeatedly without intervening discharge cycles as this will heavily overload the battery which could cause it damage or destroy it.
Remove the transmitter/charger batteries when the model is not in use.

IMPORTANT: The rechargeable battery built into the model must not be disposed of in household waste.
The rechargeable battery must be turned in at an appropriate collection point. The model must be opened to do this.
IMPORTANT: The model and the transmitter may not be thrown away as household waste but must be
turned in to a collection point for electrical waste materials. Ask your local authorities about this.
Never expose the model, the charger or the transmitter to severe heat, cold or contamination.  Protect the model, charger and transmitter against damage or slipping while they are being transported.  Never operate the model in moving water (e.g. a river) because, as a consequence of its slow speed and
the poor visibility in murky water, the model could be carried away by the current.
Never endanger yourself or others in an attempt to recover the model. Pay particular attention to the model's water-tightness. A model submarine will sink if it takes on too much
water. Prior to every use, check the model for any damage and ensure the model is watertight. The switch hatch must always be closed down watertight onto the hull when the model is operated!
Allow the model dry out good after it is used.
Care and maintenance
Clean the model after every use. Rinse off the watertight-closed model with clean tap water. Remove any
water which may have intruded. If water has gotten into RC components, allow the model to dry out then send it to the responsible GRAUPNER/SJ service center for inspection.
Clean the model, charger and transmitter only with suitable cleaning materials. A lint-free cloth is suitable.
Never use chemical cleaning agents, solvents, gasoline, spirits or similar.
After operating the model, lubricate drives with a small drop of oil because the bearings also serve as the
shaft's seal against water intrusion. To lubricate the drives, use only oil which does not contaminate or pollute water (e.g. order no. 206).
Operating instructions
With the transmitter switched off, insert the batteries into the transmitter. To do this, remove the Phillips-
head screws on the bottom of the transmitter and lift off the cover. Insert the mignon batteries (AA) with correct polarity (see marks in the battery compartment) then screw on the cover again securely.
