INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

Attention!
As a basic rule, always check that the charge level is approximately as expected after the charger has indicated that the battery is fully charged. This is a simple method of detecting a
problem reliably and in good time should the charging process be terminated incorrectly for
any reason. The likelihood of premature termination is subject to various factors but is at its highest with deep-discharged batteries, small numbers of cells and particular types of battery.
Attention!
Carry out a series of test charges (especially with small numbers of cells) to check that the automatic termination function is working correctly. If the voltage peak is too weak, the charger may fail to detect that the battery is fully charged. Fire and explosion hazard!
Attention!
Do not connect several chargers to one power strip – danger of overloading the socket –
re hazard!
Attention!
Are all the connections functioning properly? Are there any loose connections? Please be aware that charging batteries using the quick-charge process can be dangerous. An
interruption caused by a loose connection, no matter how brief, will inevitably lead to malfunctions, may cause the charging process to restart and may drastically overcharge
the connected battery. Fire and explosion hazard!
Attention!
Charging the transmitter: even a brief interruption to the charging process can cause the charging voltage in the charger to rise to an overvoltage that will lead to the immediate
destruction of the transmitter. Fire hazard!
!
!
!
!
!
Information on handling batteries
Attention!
Always carry out a series of monitored test charges on new batteries to check whether the termination function is working correctly for the batteries you are using.
Fire and explosion hazard!
Attention!
Overcharging and deep-discharge processes cause irreparable damage to the cells,
permanently impair the performance of the battery and reduce its capacity.
Attention!
Never store batteries for extended periods when they are uncharged, empty or partially charged. Charge the batteries to their specied storage capacity before placing them in storage and check their charge level from time to time.
Attention!
When buying batteries, make sure they are of good quality. Start by charging new batteries at low rates, and work up gradually towards higher currents.
Attention!
Only charge batteries shortly before use, as they are then able to deliver their best
performance.
!
!
!!!
8
English
Attention!
Do not solder directly onto the batteries – the temperatures which occur during soldering
can damage the seals and safety valves of the cells. This would cause the battery to lose electrolyte or dry out, and some of its performance would be lost.
Attention!
Overcharging damages battery capacity. Therefore, do not charge the battery if it is hot or has already been charged.
Attention!
Charging and discharging any battery at a high current shortens its life expectancy. Do not exceed the values specied by the manufacturer.
Attention!
Protect batteries from vibration and do not subject them to mechanical stress.
Attention!
Batteries can generate explosive gas (hydrogen) when charging and during operation. It is therefore important to provide adequate ventilation.
Attention!
Do not allow batteries to come into contact with water – explosion hazard!
Attention!
Never short-circuit battery contacts – explosion hazard!
Attention!
Batteries can explode or catch re if they are defective. We therefore recommend charging the batteries in a LiPo safety case (order no. 8370 or 8371).
Attention!
Do not open batteries – risk of chemical burns.
Attention!
Do not be surprised if your battery packs do not charge as quickly and their level of
performance is not as high in winter as in summer. The ability of a cold cell to accept and store charge is much lower than that of a warm one.
Attention!
Information on the German Batteries Act: exhausted batteries are regarded as hazardous waste and must not be disposed of as domestic waste. The specialist retailer where you
bought your batteries will have battery recycling containers which you can use to dispose
of them. The retailer is obliged by law to accept exhausted batteries for disposal.

General operating notices
Charging batteries
When a battery is charged, a specic amount of electrical energy is supplied to the battery. This amount is calculated by multiplying the charging current by the charging time. The
maximum permissible charging current depends on the battery type and can be found in the
information provided by the battery manufacturer.
The standard charging current may only be exceeded if the battery information explicitly
states that the battery is suitable for quick-charge processes. The STANDARD CHARGING CURRENT is 1/10 of the cells’ nominal capacity (e.g. for a 1.7 Ah battery, the standard charging current is 170 mA).
Notice!
The battery to be charged is connected to the charger's connection sockets (red = positive pole, black = negative pole). Only use original charging cables with a sufcient wire crosssection.
Notice!
Always follow the charging instructions of the battery manufacturers and adhere to the charging current and charging times. The quick-charge process may only be used by batteries that have explicitly been described as suitable for the high charging current applied by the charger.
Notice!
Please be aware that new batteries only reach their full capacity after several charging/
discharging cycles. Charging may also be terminated prematurely, particularly when new or deep-discharged batteries are used.
Notice!
If a cell in a LiXX battery pack has become particularly hot following a quick-charge process,
this may indicate a fault in that cell. You must not continue to use this battery pack (exhausted batteries must not be disposed of as domestic waste).
Notice!
A common cause of malfunctions is the use of unsuitable charging cables. As the charger cannot distinguish between the battery's internal resistance, cable resistance and connector resistance, the rst requirement for ensuring that the charger functions correctly is to use a charging cable with a sufcient wire cross-section, that is no more than 30 cm in length and has high-quality connectors on both sides (gold contacts).
Notice!
A battery installed in a remote-control transmitter can be charged via the charging socket, which is generally tted on the transmitter.
Notice!
Transmitter charging sockets usually contain a diode that prevent reverse current. This
prevents damage to the transmitter due to reverse polarity or if a short circuit occurs between
the bare ends of the charging cable connectors.
Notice!
The maximum charging current permitted for the transmitter must never be exceeded.
Notice!
To prevent damage to the internal transmitter components due to overheating and heat build-
up, the transmitter battery should be taken out of the transmitter battery compartment.
10
English
Notice!
The transmitter must be switched to "OFF" during the entire charging process.
Notice!
Never switch on a remote-control transmitter while it is connected to the charger.
Notice!
Do not discharge the battery or carry out battery maintenance programmes via the charging
socket. The charging socket is not suitable for this purpose.
Notice!
The charger only supplies the required charging current if the current is within the technical
limits of the charger. If the charger is set to receive a charging current that is outside its technical limits, the value is automatically reduced to the maximum possible value. In this case, the display shows the charging current which is actually supplied.
Care and maintenance
Care instruction!
The charger is entirely maintenance-free and therefore requires no servicing of any kind. However, it is in your own interests to protect the charger from dust, dirt and moisture.
Care instruction!
To clean the charger, disconnect it from the car battery and battery pack and gently wipe
it clean with a dry cloth only (do not use any cleaning agents).

Charging process for LiPo batteries
Starting the charging process:
Use the slide switch to select the required charging current and connect the battery to the balancer connection and charger connection cable or Tx/Rx socket. The charger will beep briey and the charging process will then start. Note: 1 or 2S LiPo batteries will still be charged if the balancer cable is not connected to the charger. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend that you always use the balancer cable. If you have a 3S LiPo battery, however, the balancer cable must be connected, as otherwise the charging process will not start.
The status LED ashes to indicate the number of cells that are connected, e.g. it will ash twice if
you have a 2S LiPo battery.
WARNING: If the number of ashes does not match the number of cells in the battery
you have connected, stop the charging process immediately by disconnecting
the battery – re hazard! Never connect 2 batteries at the same time. Only one charging output (either the charger connection cable or the JR socket) may be used at once.
Notice: If the charger is connected to a mains wall socket, the maximum charging current is limited to 2.5 A even if the slide switch is set to 4 A. The charging current can also be altered during the charging process using the slide switch. Please observe the following when charging a 3S LiPo battery at 12 VDC: Due to the slight difference between the charger's input voltage (generally approx. 12 to 13 V) and the charge termination voltage of a 3S battery (12.6 V), it is not possible to fully charge the battery – subtract a loss in voltage of approx. 0.5 V from the actual input voltage to calculate the maximum charging voltage. In general, however, the special LiPo charging process (CC-CV) allows capacities of approx. 85 to 95% to be achieved with a charge termination voltage of 12.3 to 12.5 V, meaning that you will be able to operate your model without any problems.
Stopping the charging process:
Once the battery is fully charged, the charger will beep for approx. 10 seconds, the LED will then change to red and the battery will continue to be supplied with trickle current. If the battery is not to be supplied with trickle current, it must be disconnected from the charger as soon as charging is complete. The safety timer always stops the charging process after 90 minutes.
!
Error messages and warnings
The charger is equipped with a wide range of protective and monitoring systems designed to check the individual functions and device electronics. If any of the charger's limit values are exceeded, this will cause the LED displays described below to be shown or the charging process to be stopped (e .g. if the car battery is almost flat) and a continuous warning tone to be displayed.
