638939FCA/8939FCB Fiber Optic Mux/Demux Modules
Key Features
Optical multiplexer/demultiplexer for •
combining signals on a single fiber
8939FCA provides up to 8:1 or 1:8 •
multiplexing or demultiplexing using
CWDM technology
Will accept a ninth 1310 nm signal for 9:1 •
multiplexing when connected to the EXP
port of the 8939FCA
Using the 8939FCB connected to the EXP •
port of the 8939FCA, up to 16 channels
can be transmitted on a single fiber
Up to 10 8939FCA modules can be housed •
in a GeckoFlex frame providing up to
80 channels of optical multiplexing or
demultiplexing per 2 RU frame
The module is a passive optical device for •
reliable service
Applications
For transporting multiple SD/HD/3G-SDI •
video signal over a limited fiber cable
capacity
When reducing infrastructure costs •
(cabling, electrical power consumption,
space, etc.) is required – multiplexed
video over fiber gives us an 8:1 ratio on
cabling and support equipment
Fiber is commonly used in any application •
where SD/HD/3G-SDI signals are found
The 8939FCA and 8939FCB are bi-directional
optical CWDM multiplexer/demultiplexer
modules for the 2 RU GeckoFlex frame. They
are used where multiple signals need to be
sent over one fiber. When used together, these
flexible modules are designed to multiplex up
to 16 fiber optic signals onto a single fiber.
Each passive optical module supports
SD-SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G-SDI signals from
GeckoFlex modules equipped with SFP
(small form-factor pluggable) CWDM optical
transmitters and will handle up to 3 Gb/s.
Standard receivers can be used on each
output for the receive function with each
module separating the light into its discrete
wavelengths. These modules can be used both
on the transmit, launch side, or the receive side
of the cable.
With the 8939FCA module, the eight main
optical ports can be used to accept CWDM
wavelength lasers where each signal uses a
specific wavelength of light. The expansion port
can accept or deliver an additional 1310 nm
wavelength signal for 9:1 multiplexing.
GeckoFlex fiber-ready modules can be
equipped with CWDM fiber transmitters for
ultra-compact multiplexed optical capability.
The 8939FCA can also be used with the
8935FCB module to increase the number
of optical channels to 16 which can be
transmitted over one single-mode fiber cable.
Refer to the block diagrams shown on the
following page for using the modules.

64 8939FCA/8939FCB Fiber Optic Mux/Demux Modules
Block Diagrams for Mux/Demux Applications
The 8939FCA module can be used alone for various applications or together with the 8939FCB module, depending on the application. Refer to the block
diagrams below for applications for both modules. In all of the applications using the 8939FCA and 8939FCB modules, the 8935CF/8935FC (1.5 Gb/s) or
8943CF/8943FC (3 Gb/s) or other fiber-ready GeckoFlex modules feeding video to the 8939 modules must be fitted with the correct frequency SFP fiber
optic submodule and cabled to the corresponding channel for that frequency.
8939FCA 9:1 Multiplexer to 1:9 Demultiplexer
The 8939FCA can multiplex up to nine fiber video channels from two 8943CF (Coax to Fiber) modules and another 1310 nm Grass Valley fiber-ready
module. Another 8939FCA can demultiplex the signals and feed them to two 8943FC (Fiber to Coax) modules and a 1310 nm fiber-ready Grass Valley
module over a single-mode fiber cable at a location up to 50 kilometers away.
When used as a nine-channel Mux > Demux device, the module can handle nine channels of video as shown in the block diagram example below. Note
that this includes the use of the EXP ports in both modules.
8939FCA Bi-Directional Application
The 8939CFA and 8939FCB can also be used in a bi-directional application
where any single channel on the module can transport a video signal on
its specific wavelength independent of the direction and use of the other
channels as shown in the block diagram at right. When the 8939FCB is
connected to the 8939FCA via the EXP port, the module can mux and demux
16 channels in two directions in any combination.
8939FCA/8939FCB 16-Channel Mux/Demux Application
When the 8939CFA is used with the 8939FCB as shown in the block diagram at left, an
additional eight fiber optic channels from the 8939FCB are made available. This allows
a total of 16 channels to be multiplexed and demultiplexed on a single fiber cable.
