Important Safeguards

For your own safety read following instructions carefully before attempting to connect this recorder to the mains. Mains Supply: 230V ~ 50Hz - AC only This unit is designed to operate on a 230V~50Hz supply only. Connecting it to other power sources may damage it. Ensure that the supply corresponds to the information on the rating

Getting Started

label at the rear of the recorder. This component system may be fitted with a non-rewireable plug. If it is necessary to change the fuse in a non-rewireable plug the fuse cover must be refitted. If the fuse cover becomes lost or damaged, the plug must not be used until a replacement, available from the manufacturer, is obtained. It is important that the colour of the replacement fuse cover corresponds with the colour marking on the base of the plug. If the plug needs to be changed because it is not suitable for your socket, or becomes damaged, it should be cut off and an appropriate plug fitted following the wiring instructions below. The plug must then be disposed of safely, as insertion into a 13A socket is likely to cause an electrical hazard.

IMPORTANT

The wires in the mains plug should be connected as shown in the diagram. The colours of the wires in the mains lead of the unit may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug. Connect them as follows:The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter 'N' or coloured black. The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter 'L' or coloured red. There should be no connection to the earth terminal of your plug. If a 13 Amp (BS 1363) Plug is used, a 3 Amp Fuse must be fitted, or if any other type of Plug is used a 3 Amp or 5 Amp Fuse must be fitted, either in the Plug or Adaptor, or on the Distribution Board.

Getting Started

Important Notes

Hearing is very important to you and to us so please take care when operating this equipment. It is strongly recommended that you follow the listed guidelines in order to prevent possible damage or loss of hearing.

ESTABLISH A SAFE SOUND LEVEL

Over time your hearing will adapt to continuous loud sounds and will give the impression that the volume has in fact been reduced. What seems normal to you may in fact that be harmful. To guard against this BEFORE YOUR HEARING ADAPTS set the volume at a low level.

Slowly increase the level until you can hear comfortably and clearly and without distortion.

Damage to your hearing is accumulative and is irreversible..

Any ringing or discomfort in the ears indicates that the volume is maybe too loud.

Once your have established a comfortable listening level, DO NOT INCREASE THE SOUND

LEVEL FURTHER.

The following list of typical sound levels may assist you in recognising just how loud you have set

the volume level.

If you load a disc of a different region code to your player, you will see the region code notice on the screen. The disc

will not play, and should be unloaded.

Precautions

Please read these precautions before op er at ing this unit.

 Power cord protection

To avoid any malfunctions of the unit, and to protect against electric shock, ﬁ re or personal injury, please observe the fol low ing.

Getting Started

Hold the plug ﬁ rmly when con nect ing or dis con nect ing the AC power cord. Keep the AC power cord away from heating appliances. Never put any heavy object on the AC power cord. Do not attempt to repair or reconstruct the AC power cord in any way.

 Placement

Avoid placing the unit in areas of:

The Remote Control

Installing the batteries

Locate the remote control, and remove the battery cover. Insert two AAA size batteries into the compartment.

Note: Refer to the diagram inside the battery compartment for correct installation of batteries.

We recommend the use of Alkaline batteries.

Using The Remote Control

Getting Started

To use the remote control, point it at the front of the DVD player, towards the sensor situated to the right of the DVD drawer. The remote control has a range of up to 6 metres from the DVD player and at an angle of up to 60 degrees. Do not block the path of the beam from the remote control to the DVD player.

Note: Sunlight or very bright light will reduce the remote control sensitivity.

When you ﬁ rst-time operate this recorder, please make the proper connection to TV and aerial (Refer to “Connecting External Equipment” section), then follow on-screen instruction to made the ﬁ rst initial setting. For more details about recording, refer to “Chapter 1 : Recording Functions”. For more details on advanced initial setting, refer to “Chapter 4 : Initial Setting”.

1 Turn on your TV. 2 Press Standby/On button on this recorder and

remote control.

An on-screen clock time and day setting dialog box appears on the screen.

3 Press W / X button to select “Time” and “Date”, and

press S / T button to change the variable.

Make sure the time and date match to your local time and date.

4 Press .

4a Your DVD Recorder will automatically start tuning in all the receivable channels

to your TV. This process may take several minutes to be done.

4b A warning message appears when the aerial connection did not make properly.

5 Press EJECT to open the disc tray. 6 Place a recordable DVD+RW or DVD+R onto the disc

tray. Label side facing upwards.

This recorder is only compatible with DVD+R and DVD+RW for recording.

7 Press EJECT again to close the disc tray.

Do not push the disc tray closed.

8 Follow the Onscreen instruction and select “YES” to

format your disc.

9 Press TVDVDR on the remote control to switch

to TV mode.

10 Press SOURCE on the remote control to toggle

different external A/V input sources.

Press SOURCE repeatedly to scroll through various A/V input, including:

TV, Scart, CVBS1, CVBS2, S-Video1, and S-Video2.

11 Press REC/OTR on the remote control to start to

record.

12 Press STOP on the remote control to stop recording.

1-1 Before Recording

This chapter mainly show you how to record DVD discs from external sources using the remote control. Some of the functions can also be done by using OSD Settings shown on the TV. Please refer to Chapter 4-2:

RECORD/DISC Setup for details.

 Before Timer recording, check the date and time setting again to make sure the information of the

date and time is correct. Please refer to Chapter 4-5 Timer Setup for more details.

 Make sure this Recorder is connected to external equipment correctly. Please refer to “Connecting

External Equipment” section for more details.

 This Recorder is only compatible with DVD+R or DVD+RW discs for recording.

PLAY STOP UP DOWN SOURCE RECORD

POOR RECORDINGS: To prevent ruined recordings always check on the following:

1. Always purchase good quality / named branded discs’s. Some cheap / unbranded discs may give rise to skipped / portions of the recordings to be missed.

2. It is essential that the discs are kept clean from ﬁ nger prints and scratches. Always put the disc back into its holder when not in use.

3. A feature of this DVD recorder is that it will carry on recording over scratches / blemishes or badly made disc's. On play back of the recording this will show as parts of the recording being skipped. This is NOT A FAULT OF THE PLAYER but a disc problem. Replace the disc with a new one if this occurs.

Erase/Format Setting

Erasing/formatting DVD discs can only be done through the OSD Setting. Please refer to Chapter 4-2: RECORD/DISC Setup for details.

Finalise Setting

 Before a non-ReWritable DVD disc can be played on another DVD player it has

to be ﬁ nalised. Re-Writable DVD discs do not have to be ﬁ nalised to play on other DVD players.

 DVD Discs Finalization can only be done through the OSD Setting. Please refer

to Chapter 4-2: RECORD/DISC Setup for details.

1-2 Recording

To Record TV Programs While watching

1 Turn on this DVD Recorder and your TV. 2 Press EJECT to open the disc tray. 3 Place a recordable DVD+RW or DVD+R onto the disc tray.

Hold the disc without touching its surface, position it with the printed title facing up, align

it with the guides, and place it in its proper position.

4 Press EJECT again to close the disc tray.

 If the disc is empty and has no record contents, “100% free” will show on the TV.

 If you use an unused DVD+RW or DVD+R, the ﬁ rst reading will take about one minute.

5 Press TV DVDR on the remote control to switch to

TV mode.

You will see the “LIVE” appears on the screen following by the TV programme.

6 Press PR +/- or the Number buttons to select the TV

channel you wish to record.

Press RECORD/OTR on the remote to start recording.

“REC” will ap pear on the right corner of the TV screen.

One Touch Recording (OTR) Function:

You can set a speciﬁ ed time to stop recording automatically in a period of time.  Pressing the REC/OTR button repeatedly will increase the record time in 30 minute

increments. Depending on the recording quality you selected, each time you press the button, the recording time will cycle through:

REC t +30 min t +60 min

+120 mins+90 min.

To resume to regular recording

Press RECORD/OTR button until “REC” appears on the screen.

To stop OTR (One Touch Recording)

Press STOP button to stop recording and the set time.

8 Press STOP on the remote to stop recording.

“WAIT” will appear on the TV screen, and wait until “LIVE” appear on the TV screen.

To Record From External Source

Preparations:

1. Please connect this DVD Recorder to your TV, and connect outer equipment to this DVD Recorder. (For details please refer to the Quick Guide.)

2. Remember to use an open and recordable DVD+RW or DVD+R disc.

1 Turn on this DVD Recorder and external equipment. 2 Press EJECT to open the disc tray. 3 Place a recordable DVD+RW or DVD+R onto the disc tray.

Hold the disc without touching its surface, position it with the printed title facing up, align

it with the guides, and place it in its proper position.

4 Press EJECT again to close the disc tray.

If you use an unused DVD+RW or DVD+R disc, the ﬁ rst reading will take about few

seconds. If this DVD Recorder reads a new DVD disc, you will be asked to format the disc following the screen. If this DVD Recorder reads a used DVD disc, a Title menu will show the available title for play and available space left for recording.

5 Press TVDVDR on the remote control to switch to TV mode.

You will see “Live” appear on the TV screen.

This DVD Recorder provides two ways to edit a title. One is to edit a title while the title is playing, the other is to edit a title while the title is not playing.

To Edit a Title While the Title is Playing

You have ﬁ ve options to edit a title: Insert chapter, Remove chapter, Hide chapter, Show chapter, New Picture, and Insert REC Mark.

Chapters are markers inside a title and you can jump from chapter to chapter within

the title by pressing

Once you insert a DVD+RW disc, a title menu appears

You have to insert a chapter into a title ﬁ rst if the beginning and end of the

removed chapter hasn’t been set up.

Hide chapter

You can use this function to hide chapters.

1 Press / to select one title to play, and press to

2 Press EDIT, and the EDIT menu will be shown on the screen. 3 Press / to select “Hide chapter”. Once you are at the

point where you would like to hide the chapter, press .

While this chapter is being played back, “Hidden” will be shown on the screen.

 You have to insert a chapter into a title ﬁ rst and then hide it; if the beginning and end

of the hidden chapter hasn’t been set up.



Once a chapter is hidden, it will not show up during normal playback. If you want to see

the hidden chapter, you have to select it by chapter number. For details please refer

to Chapter 2-2: Direct Selection of Scenes.

 To playback hidden chapters, refer to “Play Full Title” function.

 To recover hidden chapters permanently, refer to “Show Chapter” function.

Preparations

 Turn on the TV set, and select “Video” as the TV input.  Turn on the stereo system if this recorder has been connected to a stereo system.

Basic Playback

1 Press STANDBY on the remote. 2 Press EJECT to open the disc tray. 3 Place a disc onto the tray. Label side facing upwards.

Hold the disc without touching its surfaces, position it with the printed title side facing up, align

it with the guides, and place it in its proper position.

4 Press EJECT again to close the disc tray.

The disc tray closes and this DVD recorder starts playback if the disc does not have any

recorded on it.

 If the disc has one or more titles recorded on it, a menu screen will appear on the TV screen.

Proceed with steps 5 and 6 when a menu is available on the disc.

Stopping Playback and Returning to the Menu Screen

Press Disc Menu. This DVD Recorder stops playback, and then displays the menu

screen.

After operation

When this DVD Recorder is not in use, remove the disc and press POWER on the remote

control to turn to stand-by mode. When on stand-by mode, the power indicator of this DVD

Recorder turns red.

 The disc continues to rotate while the menu is displayed even after the player has

ﬁ nished playing a particular disc. When no further selections are to be played, be sure

to press the STOP button to clear the menu screen.

 If the disc is placed upside down (and it is a single sided disc), the player’s display will appear

“NO DISC”.

Clearing/Changing Subtitles

If a disc provides subtitles, you can choose to hide or change them. (This operation works only with discs that provide subtitles.)

Viewing From Another Angle

Some DVD discs may contain scenes which have been shot si mul ta neous ly from a number of different angles. For these discs, the same scenes can be viewed from each of these different angles using the ANGLE “ ” button. (The recorded angles vary depending on the disc programmed.)

Using a DVD Menu

Some DVD discs have unique menu structures called DVD menus. For example, DVDs programmed with complex contents provide guide menus, and those recorded with various languages provide menus for audio and subtitle language. Although the DVD menu’s contents and operation vary from disc to disc, the following ex plains basic operation when this feature is used.

Muting the DVD Recorder

In some cases, you may need to mute this DVD Recorder tem po rari ly. This player provides a MUTE function for your se lec tions.

1 Press MUTE button during playback, a MUTE icon appears

on the left corner of the screen.

 When a MUTE icon appears on the screen, this DVD Recorder is mute. To resume the

sound, press MUTE again.

Playing Kodak Picture CDs and JPEG picture CDs

You can play Kodak picture CDs and JPEG pictures for viewing on the screen.

Basic Playback

Load a Kodak picture CD on the tray.

After few seconds, the player starts play back the pictures in slide show automatically.

1 Press ZOOM repeatedly to view picture in different sizes:

Channel Search is a tuner search and allows a channel to be conﬁ rmed. During initial setup,

this DVD Recorder will select available TV channels. Yet, if more channels become available in

your area, you may need to repeat the Channel Search to update the available channels.

Video Plus+ Setting

Video Plus is the encoding of a programme schedule information represented by a number of up to eight digits. These code are printed in most TV programme Guide in your area. To programme your favourite TV programs, simply input the code for timer recording. Depending on different regions of the world, the name of programming system may be various, for example, VCR Plus (North & South America), G-Code (Asia, Australia), Video Plus+ (United Kingdom), and ShowView (Europe & Africa).

Important: Make sure Date Time Setting be the same as your local time. Otherwise,

5-1 Troubleshooting

Before requesting service for the DVD Recorder, check the chart below for a possible cause of the problem you are ex pe ri enc ing. Some simple checkups or a minor adjustment on your part may eliminate the problem and restore proper op er a tion.

SYMPTOM (COMMON) REMEDY

No power. • Insert the power plug securely into the power outlet.

• Check if the ON/OFF button on the front of the player is set to on.

• Check if no power at the AC outlet by plugging in another appliance for a test.

The player does not start playback when • Condensation has formed: wait about 1 to 2 hours to allow the player to dry out. PLAY is pressed. • This player cannot play discs other than DVDs and audio CDs.

• Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.

• Check the region (local) code.

The player starts playback but stops • The disc may be dirty and may require cleaning. immediately. • Ensure that the disc is installed with the label side up.

No picture. • Ensure that the equipment is connected properly.

• Ensure that the input setting for the TV is “Video”.

• Check if the TV is on.

• Select the same channel and source on the TV as on the player.

No sound. • Ensure that the equipment is connected properly.

• If using a HiFi ampliﬁ er, try another sound source.

• Check the Audio Output Setting menu to make sure that Analog Output is selected.

Distorted sound. • Ensure that the input settings for the TV and stereo system are proper.

• No sound is heard during still picture (pause) or slow-motion playback.

No audio at Digital Output. • Check the digital connections.

• Check the settings menu to make sure that the digital output is set to on.

• Check if the audio format of the selected audio language matches your receiver capabilities.

Distorted picture. • Check the disc for ﬁ ngerprints and clean with a soft cloth, wiping from center to edge.

• Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a mal function.

Completely distorted picture or no color • The disc format is not according to the TV-set used (PAL/NTSC). in picture.

Picture is distorted during rapid advance • The picture will be somewhat distorted at times: this is normal. or rapid reverse.

No rapid advance (or rapid reverse) • Some discs may have sections which prohibit rapid advance (or rapid reverse). playback.

No 4:3 (16:9) picture. • Choose the correct setup “Aspect Ratio” item which matches the TV set used.

No operations perform with the remote • Check the batteries are installed with the correct polarities (+ and –). control. • The batteries are depleted: replace them with new ones.

• Point the remote control unit at the remote control signal sensor and operate.

• Operate the remote control unit at a distance of not more than 7 meters from the remote control signal sensor.

• Check if the audio output setting is right.

• Check If you set output format in “Progressive Scan”, then you have to set “Com po nent” in the video output setting. The actual output format must match to the output format setting.

OSD setting doesn’t be executed • Some setting must be stored by pressing left button. Recheck it.

Wrong time • Reset time.

Disc Handling and Maintenance

Handling Precautions

 Hold the disc by the edges so the surface will not be

soiled with ﬁ ngerprints. (A)

Fingerprints, dirt and scratches can cause skipping and distortion.

 Do not write on the label side with a ball-point pen or other

writing utensils.

 Do not use record cleaning sprays, benzine, thinner, static

electricity prevention liquids or any other solvent.

 Be careful not to drop or bend the disc.  Do not install more than 1 disc on the disc tray.  Do not try to close the disc tray when the disc is not installed

properly. (B)

 Be sure to store the disc in its exclusive case when not in use.

If the surface is soiled (C)

Wipe gently with a soft, damp (water only) cloth.

When wiping discs, always move the cloth from the center hole toward the outer edge.

(If you wipe the discs using a circular motion, circular scratches are likely to occur, which will cause noise.)

Deﬁ nition of Terms

Angle

Recorded onto some DVD discs are scenes which have been si mul ta neous ly shot from a number of different angles (the same scene is shot from the front, from the left side, from the right side, etc.). With such discs, the ANGLE button can be used to view the scene from different angles.

Chapter Number

These numbers are recorded on DVD discs. A title is subdivided into many sections, each of which is numbered, and speciﬁ c parts of video presentations can be searched quickly using these numbers.

DVD

These refer to a high-density optical disc on which high-quality pictures and sound have been recorded by means of digital signals. Incorporating a new video compression technology (MPEG II) and high-density recording technology, DVD enables aesthetically pleas ing full-motion video to be recorded over long periods of time (for instance, a whole movie can be recorded).

DVD has a structure consisting of two 0.6 mm thin discs which are adhered to each other. Since the thinner the disc, the higher the density at which the information can be recorded, a DVD disc has a greater capacity than a single 1.2 mm thick disc. Since the two thin discs are adhered to each other, there is the potential to achieve double-sided play sometime in the future for even longer duration play.

DVD+R

This means DVD+Recordable. These Discs can be recorded and ﬁ nalised only once.

DVD+RW

This means DVD+ReWritable. These Discs can be recorded on repeatedly.

Subtitles

These are the printed lines appearing at the bottom of the screen which translate or transcribe the dialogue. They are recorded on DVD discs.

Time Digit

This indicates the play time which has elapsed from the start of a disc or a title. It can be used to ﬁ nd a speciﬁ c scene quickly. (It may not work with some discs.)

Title Number

These numbers are recorded on DVD discs. When a disc contains two or more movies, these movies are numbered as title 1, title 2, etc.

Track Number

These numbers are assigned to the tracks which are recorded on audio CDs. They enable speciﬁ c tracks to be located quickly.
