Global Specialties specifically warns the user of this instrument that it is intended for

the likelihood of interference is increased by the close proximity of neighbors.

CORRECTIVE MEASURES:

Interference can be reduced by the following practices.

1) Install a commercially built RFI power filter in the power line at the point where the
cord enters the unit.

2) Avoid long wires. They act as antennas.

3) If long wires must be used, use shielded cables or twisted pairs which are properly

grounded and terminated.

INTRODUCT ION

The Global Specialties Model PB-500 Analog Circuits Trainer is an analog
breadboarding instrument with built-in power supplies and function generator. It can be
used for analog circuit design and training purposes and its unique combination of
built-in functions and uncommitted devices makes it one of the most convenient bread­boarding systems available.

Power supplies - The PB-500 has four regulated DC power supplies available for
breadboarding. Two of the supplies are fixed at plus and minus 12 volts. The remaining
two supplies are completely variable from 0 to +7.5 volts DC and 0 to (-) 7.5 volts DC
respectively. All four supplies are short circuit protected.

Function Generator - The PB-500 is capable of producing sine, triangle, square and TTL
signals over the range of 0.1Hz to l00KHz. An internal capacitor sets the frequency
to1KHz, but the full range can be attained by installing external capacitors of the
appropriate value. (See addendum note #1).

Uncommitted devices – ThePB-500 has a number of "uncommitted" devices
installed in it to support your breadboarding needs:

1. Two Slide potentiometers, 10k and 100k

2. Two SPDT slide switches

3. Two BNC connectors

4. One 2 " Speaker

Breadboarding - All of the above functions are internally connected to a solderless
interconnect socket with 5 tie points for each signal. In addition, a Global Specialties
UBS-100 solderless breadboarding socket is attached to the unit, thus providing a
convenient work area for circuitry being designed or studied. Both sockets allow
insertion of components or wires up to#20 AWG.

The unit is housed in a durable plastic enclosure with a hinged protective cover thus
making it portable and stack-able for storage purposes.

PB-500 CHECKOUT

1. Power Section - AC Adap t o r Op e r a t i o n
a) Plug AC adaptor in t o J l then in wall outlet. Che c k f o r -12 volts

between "-12 v" and " G N D.

b) Check for +12 vo lts b e t w e e n " + 1 2 v" and "GND". Voltages

should measure +/ - 1 2 v o l t s + / -5%.

2. Variable Supplies

a) Measure the volta g e b e t ween "-V" and " G N D", u s i n g t h e slide

pot (R2) the supply voltage shou ld va r y f r o m 0 t o - 7 . 5 volts +/­10%.

b) Measure the volta g e b e t ween "+V" and "GND", using the slide

potentiometer (R6) the suppl y v o lta g e s h o u ld vary from 0 to +7.5
volts +/-10%.

3. Short Circuit Indicators

a) Set both variable s u p p l i e s t o 7.5, place a jumper from " -V" t o

"GND" CR2 should l i g h t ind icatin g a s h o r t e d c o n d i t i o n .

b) Place a jumper f ro m " + V " t o " GND" CR4 should l i g h t i n d i c a t ing

a shorted condition. Remo ve jumper s t h e L E D s s h o u ld go out.

4. Function Generator

NOTE: A l l waveforms should be 1 k h z +/-20 % w i t h a 5 0% duty cycle

Triangle Wa ve

a) Set S3 to "TRI" po s i t i o n .
b) Attach an oscillos c o p e b e tween "SIN/TRI" and "GND".
c) Adjust R15 (located under PC board) f or a symmetrical

waveform with app r o x i m a t e l y a 9 v pk to pk.

Sine Wave

a) Set S3 to "SIN" position.
b) The wave form on you r o s c i l l o scope should be a symmetrical

sinusoid with approximately a 4v pk to pk. amplitude

Square Wave

a) Move oscilloscope l e a d f r o m "SIN/TRI" to "SOR".
b) The waveform on y o u r o s c i l l o s c o p e should be a symmetrical

square wave with an 8v pk to pk. A m p l i t u d e .

TTL

a) Move the oscillosc o p e l e a d f rom "SOR" to "TTL".
b) The waveform on y o u r o s c i l l o s c o p e should be a pulse train

going from 0 to +5 volts. Disconne ct oscilloscope f r o m u n i t .

5. Speaker

a) Jumper "SPKR - " t o "GND" and "SPKR+" to "SOR".
b) A 1KHz tone shoul d b e a u d i b l e f rom the speaker.
c) Remo ve t h e j u m p e r b e tween "SPKR+" and "SOR" and the t o n e

should no longer be audible

6. Uncommitted Switc h e s ( S I & S 2 )

(S1)
a) Set SI to the "1,2" p o s i t i o n .
b) Jumper "SQR" to " S l -2" and "SPKR+" to "Sl - 1 "
c) A 1KHh z tone s h o u l d b e a udible from the speaker.
d) Set SI to the "2,3" p o s i t i o n .
e) The tone shou ld n o lo n g e r b e a u d ible
f) Move the jumper from " S l -1" to "Sl-3".
g) The tone shou ld b e a udible.
h) Set SI to the "1,2" p o s i t i o n ,
i) The tone should no longer be aud ib le.
j) Remove jumpers (except for "SPKR -" to "GND").

(S2)
a) Set S2 to the "1,2" p o s i t ion .
b) Jumper "SOR" to " S 2 -2" and "SPKR+" to "S2 - 1 " .
c) A 1KH z tone s h o u l d be audible from the speaker.
d) Set S2 to the "2,3" p o s i t ion .
e) The tone shou ld n o lo n g e r b e a u d ible
f) Move the jumper from " S 2 -1" to "S2-3".
g) The tone shou ld b e a u d i b l e .
h) Set S2 to the "1,2" p o s i t ion .
i) The tone should no longer be aud ib le.
j) Remove all jumpers.

7. Uncommitted Pots (R21 & R22)

10k (R21)

a) Set the 10k slide r t o i t ' s l e f t-most posi t i o n .
b) Connect an ohmm e t e r (10 k r a n g e ) between "10k - 1 " a nd "10k-2".
c) Th e m e t e r s h o u l d r e ad zero ohms.
d) Move the slider g ra d u a l l y t o t h e right and observe the

ohmmeter.

e) The reading on the m e t e r should inc re a s e f rom 0 to 10k ohms in

proportion to the movement of t h e s l i d er.

f) Move the ohmmeter lead from "10k -2" to "10k-3" and ch e c k f or

approximately 10k ohms.

100k (R22)

a) Set the 100k slide r t o i t s l e f t-most pos i t i o n .

b) Connect an ohmmeter (100k range) b e t ween " 100k -1" a n d

"100k-2".
c) The meter should read 0 ohms.
d) Move the slider gradually to the right and obs e r v e the

ohmmeter.

e) The re a d i n g o n the me t e r s h o u l d increase f r o m 0 to 100k o h m s

in proportion to the movement of the slider.

f) M o ve th e ohmmet e r lead from "1 0 0k -2" to "100k-3" and check

for approximatel y 1 0 0 k o h m s .

8. BNC Connectors (BNC-1 & B N C - 2)
(BNC-1)

a) Check for continui t y b e t w e e n " B N C -l -" a n d t h e metal shell of

BNC-1.

b) Check for continui t y b e t w e e n " B N C -1+ " a n d t h e c e n t e r pin of

BNC-1.

c) Check for an open circuit bet ween "B N C -1-" and "B NC - 1 +".

SERVICE AND WARRANTY INFORMATION

WARRANTY

Global Specialties warrants this device to be free from defective material or
workmanship for a period of 3 full years from date of original purchase. Under this
warranty, Global Specialties is limited to repairing the defective device when returned to
the factory, shipping charges prepaid, within 3 full years from date of original purchase.

Units returned to Global Specialties that have been subject to abuse, misuse, damage
or accident, or have been connected, installed or adjusted contrary to the instructions
furnished by Global Specialties, or that have been repaired by unauthorized persons will
not be covered by this warranty.

Global Specialties reserves the right to discontinue models, change specifications, price
or design of this device at any time without notice and without incurring any obligation
whatsoever.

The purchaser agrees to assume all liabilities for any damages and/or bodily injury
which may result from the use or misuse of this device by the purchaser, his employees,
or agents.

This warranty is in lieu of all other representations or warranties expressed or
