Most all software requires that you manually configurethe COMportsettingforany GPS deviceyou use.
IMPORTANT:
1. Youmust change thedefault rate settingof your mappingsoftware‘s Baud Rate to 4800if thisis not currently setas such otherwiseGPS data cannotbe received.
2. SetBaudRate4800, DataBit:8,Parity: None,Stop Bit:1, Flow Control: None

3. COM PORT VERIFICATION
1. OnceyourUSBDriverhas beeninstalled, you will needtoconfirmwhichCOM Portyour PC
hasassigned to it in order to properlyconfigureany softwarethat will be utilizing the GPSdata being received.
2. Your USB GPSMUSTbe pluggedintoyour USBport atthis time.
3. UsingWindow’sControl Panel, select System > Hardware > Device Manager
4. Then lookunder theheading of: PORTS (Com& LPT)
5. There should be a listingfor: Prolific Serial-to-USB CommPort (COMx)
(“x”willactually be thenumberyour PC hasassigned theUSB GPS receiver).
6. Onceyou haveidentified the COMport number, anysoftwarethat youutilizemust be

We stronglysuggest thatyou first testyour USBGPSwith theincluded GPSInfo utilityprogramto confirmthat theGPS receiveriffunctioning properlyon your PC andthat youhave successfully configuredthe rightCOMPortsetting. Oncethis hasbeen done, closethe GPSInfo program and start yourapplication forCOMport configuration.

4. INITIALIZING YOUR GPS RECEIVER
Before using your USB GPS receiver for navigation (especially for the first time), the receiver must obtain a localGPS fix (coordinates) of the current position. To do this, take your laptop(with yourUSB driver and the mapping software loaded and configured) to an open area that has a clear view to the sky (suchas a park or emptyfield). Start your software (or the included GPS Info utility program) and wait for initialization of the GPS to complete. This may take a few minutes depending on various factors such as the distance of the current coordinates from the last time the GPS receiver was activated, GPS signal strength and surrounding terrain (tall trees and buildings can block the satellite signals). Once the RAW GPS data is displayed onto the screen, if applicable for your software, a fix has been initialized (red LED on theGPS willalso start to flash). In some cases initialization can take up to several minutes depending on the conditions mentioned above beforecomplete GPS datawill be displayed on thescreen.
Coordinatesscrollingwith zero’smeans thatthe portconnectionis complete, butthe satellitedatais not being receivedyet (possibly stillinitializingor ina badarea forsatellite reception).
5. USING / TESTING YOUR GPS RECEIVER
Once the USB GPS receiver’s driver and your personal mapping software have been installed and configured properly, you can begin to use your navigation system by plugging the USB GPS into your laptop’s USB port and launching your mapping software. If you don’t have a mapping, or navigation software, we’ve included a GPS test utility called “GPS Info” for the purpose of confirming your installation and configuration. This utility can be installedby clickingthe GPSInfo.exe file fromthe Win directory on theCD-ROMordownloadedfrom ourweb-site www.usglobalsat.com.
LEDStatusindicatoron the USB GPS” LEDOFF: GPS receiveris off (nopower). LEDON (solid): Nofix, searchingfor GPSsignals. LEDFLASHING: Position fixestablishedand GPSsignalsare being received.
Always select an area in the vehicle where the GPS unit willbe secure andnot obstructnormaldriving, visibilityand safety, butstill maintaining a “viewtothesky”inorder to receivesatellitedata.
Itisrecommendedthat youfirstload andtestyourGPS receiverwith the GPSinfo.exe. This process will confirm youhave foundcorrect COMport number and haveconfiguredit properly.
1. RunGPSinfo.exe to loadthe utility.
2. Enter theproperCOM portforyourGPSdevice(see COMPort Verificationabove)
3. SetCOM portto Baud rate: 4800
4. If no errors have been made in configuration, there should be GPS data being displayed in the
window, which is confirmation that the communication between the GPS device and the “GPSinfo” software is working properly.
5. Ifthere is no GPSdata displayed (or datawithmultiple zeros in them),pleaseexitthe software and
unplugtheGPS receiverfrom theUSBport andreinsert it after 10 secondsto resetthe device.

Willthe USB GPSwork with otherStreetMapping software?
Globalsat USB GPSreceiversprovides standardNMEA datafor mappingsoftware to use andconvert to coordinatesand should workwell withmost anyNMEA compliant softwareon the market today.
How accurate is the GPS?
TheUSB GPS is WAAS/EGNOScapable, andfor unitssoldin NorthAmericathrough authorized resellers, these units areWAAS/EGNOS enabled unless otherwise stated. Accuracycanbeupto5 meters 3D RMSwithWAAS enabledand 10-15meters2D RMSWAASdisabled
Whatis idealGPS environment?
TheGPS requiresanopen, clear viewof the sky. Buildings, covered parkingareas, tunnels and dense foliagecan causethe GPSreceiver to be unableto getalocation fix.
Ifyouare parked in a covered parkinglot or neara tallbuilding, it is recommendedthatyou drive away until youhave a clearview of thesky beforeusingthe BU-303. Youmay needto givetheGPSa few minutesto find or geta fixits location.
How doI know if the GPSis ON?
Your USB GPSmustbe plugged intoyourlaptop’s USBport to get power. If your PC is on andthe COMport wasconfiguredproperly, theGPS receiveris on and receivingthe streaming GPS data. This canbe verified byopeningyour mappingsoftwareprogram. In addition, the GlobalsatUSB GPS hasa built-in LED status indicator thatshowsthe following:
LEDOFF: GPS receiver is off (nopower). LEDON (solid): Nofix, searchingfor GPSsignals. LEDFLASHING: Position fixestablishedand GPSsignalsare being received.

Whydoes the GPSnot worknear buildings and other tallobjects?
TheGPS uses satellitesin the spaceto find outwhereit is. Thereforeit needsa clear viewof the sky. Tall buildingsand otherobjects thatblockthe receiver’s viewto the skymake it infeasible to determine your location. Sometimesthe satellites arenotoverheadbutnearthehorizon. Inthesecasesthe GPS musthave a clear viewof the horizon.
