Safety instructions
WARNING. Read and understand all instructions. Failure
to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term “power tool” in all of the warnings below refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
Save these instructions Work area
Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.
Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres,
such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
Keep children and bystanders away while operating a
power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
Electrical safety
Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces
such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying,
pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
When operating a power tool outdoors, use an outdoor
extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal safety
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection.
Safety equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the
off-position before plugging in. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning
the tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at
all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery.
Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust
extraction and collection facilities ensure that these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust-related hazards.
Power tool use and care
Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on
and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
Page 5
5
Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do
not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding
of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained
cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in
accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from intended could result in a hazardous situation.
Service
Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair personnel using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Assembly
It is necessary to fit the guard (7) to the lower shaft (5) and the secondary handle (4) to the upper shaft (23).
1. Ensure the switch is in the off position and disconnect the cable plug from the mains supply.
2. Position the safety guard mount (10) at the bottom of the lower shaft. Ensure the middle hole of the mount lines up with the guard fixing point (22).
3. Place the guard split washer (19), followed by the guard washer (20) onto the guard locking screw (19), insert into the centre hole of the safety guard mount and tighten into the guard fixing point.
4. Fix the guard in place with the four fixing screws (21).
5. Fit the secondary handle (4) to the upper shaft (23) by fitting the handle over the shaft and placing the locking clamp nut (included) through the holes in the guard and tightening in the most comfortable position to the secondary handle locking knob (16).
To attach the two sections of the shaft
1. Align the two sections of the shaft and, keeping the head straight, fully insert the lower section until the shaft locking button (12) engages in the locating hole in the upper shaft. The head will be in the normal operating position.
Note. If the two shafts do not fully fit together, rotate the
head of the line trimmer to assist in aligning the drive shafts.
2. Tighten the upper shaft section to the lower shaft by turning the shaft locking knob (11) clockwise and firmly gripping the shaft locking nut (17).
Fitting the carry strap
1. Hook the strap (15) to the carry strap hook (14) on the front of the handle.
2. Adjust the length of the strap as required.
Before starting
Before use, check that the tool is in good working order and that the length of the trimmer line is correct, as follows:
1. Ensure the switch is in the off position and disconnect the cable plug from the mains supply.
2. Examine the general condition of the tool. Inspect the guard, switch, cordset and extension cord. Check for loose screws, misalignment, binding of moving parts, improper mounting, broken parts and any other condition that may affect its safe operation.
If abnormal noise or vibration occurs during operation, turn the line trimmer off immediately and have the problem corrected.
Page 9
9
3. Ensure that you are on a flat surface and have secure footing.
4. Check that the line touches or goes beyond the edge of the guard.
WARNING. For your own safety
when adjusting the length of the line, avoid coming into contact with the line cutting blade (8) which is fixed to the guard. It is extremely sharp. Keep your hands well away from this area.
Switching on and off
1. Connect the plug to the power supply.
Starting
2. Depress the lock-off button (13) and squeeze the trigger switch (3).
Stopping
3. When you release the trigger, the machine turns off and the lock-off button re-engages to prevent accidental operation.
WARNING. The tool runs for approximately 5 seconds after
it has been switched off. Let the motor come to a complete standstill before setting the tool down.
Trimming
1. Make sure that the work area is free of rocks, debris, lines and other foreign objects.
2. To start the line trimmer, first push the lock-off button (13) and then press the trigger switch (3). To switch off the trimmer simply release the starting switch. Start the machine before approaching the grass to be cut.
3. Short or worn line cuts less efficiently, so to improve its operation tap the spool lightly on the ground while the trimmer is running at full speed. This will activate the selfadjustment of the cutting line to the correct length.
Note. To feed out line when you bump the base of
the trimmer, the line trimmer must be operating close to full speed.
A spring-loaded button on the spool holder is depressed when the trimmer is “bumped” and this releases line due to the inertial force of the spinning spool. If too much line is fed out and it projects beyond the guard edge, it is cut by the blade in the guard. It is only necessary to replace line that is broken during use. Do not “bump” to excess as it wastes line. It takes a little practice and experience to judge when to “bump”.
Note. Do not cut damp or wet grass. Dry grass will give
excellent results.
Note. Always let the line trimmer rotate at top speed, do not
work in such a way as to overload the trimmer.
4. Cut the grass by swinging the machine from right to left and proceed slowly keeping the trimmer inclined forwards at an angle of about 30º.
5. High grass should be cut in layers always beginning from the top. Do not cut damp or wet grass. Do not overload your machine.
6. Avoid wearing the line out quickly by knocking against hard objects (stones, walls, fences etc.).
7. Watch out for kickbacks in the event of impact with hard objects.
WARNING. Never pass the machine over the extension
cable while the machine is running. Make sure it is always in a safe position behind your back.
Changing the line and spool
1. Disconnect the trimmer from the power supply.
2. Turn the machine upside down, so you have access to the cutting line in the trimming head.
3. Whilst holding the trimming head (6), turn the spool (9)
Page 10
10
anti-clockwise, as indicated by the “OFF” arrow, to unscrew it from the trimming head (6).
4. The spool will then become loose. Remove the spool and spring from the spindle.
5. Cut two 3m equal lengths of 2mm line. Thread the first line through the top hole, above the spool divider. Wind it in an anti-clockwise direction, as shown by the arrows on the base of the spool. Then insert the other length of line in the bottom hole and wind it in anticlockwise around the spool.
6. Leaving 15cm of line, lock each end into the slots on opposite sides of the spool.
7. Place the spring over the spindle. Insert each of the cutting lines through the eyelets in the cutting head assembly. Feed the line through the holes while lowering the spool.
8. Once the spool is in place, apply pressure on the spool, compressing the spring. Pull each end of the line sharply to unlock the line from the slots. Ensure both lines have disengaged the slots before proceeding. Continue to apply pressure to the spool and screw the spool (9) clockwise onto the spindle. Tighten the spool securely.
9. When operating for the first time after changing the spool of line ensure to test the assembly by running the line trimmer in a safe location. The line may not be fully extended so you may need to “bump” the head at full speed to feed the line to the correct length.
Power cable restraint
During the use of the line trimmer, the extension cord will continually be pulled as you move from one area to another.
A power cable restraint (1) support has been provided on the housing of the line trimmer to assist in preventing the electrical connection between the extension cord and the line trimmer plug being forced apart.
Note. The support is for the extension cord, and not the
cable from the line trimmer. To fit the extension cord to the support, make a loop in the
extension cord and fit the loop into the curved recess at the back of the line trimmer. Push the loop downwards so it fits securely into the round cut away section.

Maintenance and cleaning
1. Store the tool, instruction manual and accessories in a secure, dry place. In this way you will always have the information ready to hand.
2. Keep the tool’s air vents unclogged and clean at all times.
3. Remove dust and dirt regularly. Cleaning is best done with a rag.
4. All bearings and bushes are lubricated for life.
5. If the cordset is damaged or worn, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, or service agent or a similarly qualified person in order to avoid a hazard.
6. Never use caustic agents to clean plastic parts.
CAUTION. Do not use cleaning agents to clean the plastic
parts of the tool. A mild detergent on a damp cloth is recommended. Water must never come into contact with the tool.
General inspection
Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight. They may vibrate loose over time.
Storage
1. Store the trimmer away from direct sunlight.
2. Do not store in a nylon bag as this can encourage the formation of mould.
3. At the end of the season, give the trimmer an overall cleaning and a thorough check.
4. Do not leave the trimmer resting on the floor for extended periods as it could cause the shape of the guard to alter, posing a safety risk. Hang it off the floor by the top handgrip.
Power cord maintenance
If the supply cord needs replacing, the task must be carried out by the manufacturer, the manufacturer’s agent, or an authorised service centre in order to avoid a safety hazard.
