Panel Location Requirements
Building codes have requirements for full wall coverings. Install the
panels in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. If the wall
is longer than the 8 ft (2.43 m) panel, you will need to stagger the
vertical panel joints in each row with the seams at the wooden studs,
as shown.
Screw Requirements
Screws must be placed in every slot at every wooden stud location.
For bare wooden studs: Use #8 – 1¹⁄₄" exterior deck screw (flat-head
type) treated for outdoor use only for locations where a firewall is not
required by local codes and ordinances.

Prepare the Wall
Panels can be mounted directly to masonry wall with wooden studs
attached, over drywall to wooden studs, or to bare wooden studs. If
the mounting surface is not flat, the walls may need to be shimmed.
Masonry Block/Poured Concrete Wall
Drywall over Wooden Studs
1. Locate all wooden studs and mark the wall(s).
2. Locate electrical wiring and mark the wall(s).
Before you can install the panels on poured concrete or masonry
block walls, you must install 2" x 4" (5.1 cm x 10.2 cm) wooden studs
to the wall with the 4" (10.2 cm) side against the wall. The wooden
studs must be installed over the entire area to be covered by the
GearWall
panels.
1. Install the first stud at the starting edge of the desired coverage
2. Use this stud as your guide. Measure 16" (40.64 cm) from the

panels. This provides a level surface on which to apply the
area to act as a guide.
■ Drill a hole through the stud and into the wall surface. Follow
masonry screw manufacturer’s instructions for proper
installation.
■ For best results use a hammer drill and masonry bit.
NOTE: For extra hold, you may choose to put construction
adhesive on the stud before attaching it to the wall.
■ Secure the stud to the wall by placing ¹⁄₄" x 2³⁄₄" masonry
screws every 18" (45.72 cm).

Outlets and Switches
Locate any cutouts, measure and cut the panels prior to beginning
the installation. Electrical outlets should be recessed and trimmed in
the following manner, using GearWall

cover.
2. Cut the GearWall

IMPORTANT: Start at one of the bottom corners of the desired
coverage area and work toward the other in horizontal rows.
1. Mark the lowest edge for the GearWall
level chalk line at this height. It is recommended for this chalk line
to be at least 12" (30.5 cm) from the floor.
2. Measure from the starting edge of the desired coverage area to
the center of the last wooden stud that is within 8 ft (2.43 m).
3. Cut the first panel to this length, making sure the cut is square.
NOTE: Panels shorter than 24" (60.96 cm) long should not be
used.
4. Place the panel above the horizontal chalk line applied in Step 1.
Align the panel with both the starting edge and the horizontal
chalk line. Panels are installed with the interlock tongue up and
the groove down.

9. The final row of panels can be rip cut lengthwise to fit the
required height.
10. Begin additional walls in the same manner as the first, starting
with the corner that meets the completed wall. Be sure to align
the panel slots.
■ For a trimless installation, place new panels snugly against
the existing panels.
■ For a trimmed installation, refer to the “GearWall

poured concrete wall installation.

5. Check that the panel is level. Then place a screw in every slot at
every stud location.
NOTE: Drive the screws through the slot groove until they are
flush. If splitting occurs, predrill and countersink the drill holes
near the channel end.
6. Continue this process until you reach the opposite edge of the
desired coverage area.
7. Then start a new row, remembering to stagger the panels if
necessary. See the “Panel Location Requirements” section.
