INSTRUCTIONS FOR CERUMEN REMOVAL
Position the patient comfortably on the examination table. Smaller children may be restrained on their parent’s lap or shoulder during the procedure.
Using an otoscope, examine the ear canal and tympanic membrane, noting the presence and location of any cerumen in the ear canal.
Select an ear curette of the appropriate size for the patient:
White FlexLoop®* for children and adults, general purpose; Blue InfantScoop®* for smaller infants and children; Green MicroLoop® for the harder cerumen of older children and adults; Yellow CeraSpoon®* for fast removal of extensive cerumen Red AngleLoop®* for hard to reach cerumen; Purple VersaLoop®* for gentle precision; and the Orange ControLoop®* for precise control and direction during curettage.
Straighten the ear canal by gently pulling the ear up and away from the patient. Gently use the curette to loosen and draw cerumen from the ear canal. Use an otoscope to frequently re-examine the ear canal during the procedure as cerumen may shift position or move during curettage.
Note the presence and location of the remaining cerumen, if any. Repeat the curettage procedure until sufficient cerumen is removed to allow adequate examination of the tympanic membrane.
CAUTION: Discontinue curettage immediately if bleeding, irritation, or other trauma to the ear canal or tympanic membrane occurs.
