Innovative Low Energy Advanced Primary Treatment for MBR
Addressing Our Customers' Challenges
Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology is recognized as the best available technology for treating municipal and industrial wastewater to alleviate water scarcity, enable water reuse and help protect our natural environment. With over 25 years of MBR experience, GE continues to set the standard for product innovation, membrane manufacturing, system design and customer support. In addition to our industry-leading ZeeWeed* MBR and LEAPmbr products, GE brings innovation to other areas of an MBR plant to enhance the performance and efficiency of our customers’ facilities.
Our customers increasingly focus on energy efficiency. Rising energy costs and concerns about greenhouse gas emissions mean that wastewater treatment plant owners and operators value equipment and processes that reduce energy consumption.
What is LEAPprimary?
LEAPprimary is an advanced primary treatment
system that combines separation, thickening and
dewatering of primary solids in a single compact
unit. The LEAPprimary system performs the same
function as a primary clarifier and fine screen
in a typical MBR plant. The figure below depicts
the performance advantages of combining
LEAPprimary and LEAPmbr technologies.
Compact design reduces plant footprint and capital cost
High removal of TSS (50% to 70%) and BOD (25% to 40%) reduces organic load to biological treatment
Energy Savings
Reduce energy for
biological treatment by
25% and enable energy
recovery.
Cost Savings
Reduce primary treatment
equipment for your MBR
and save 20% to 40%.
Simplified Design
Combine primary solids
separation, sludge
thickening and dewatering
in one compact step.
LEAPprimary addresses the energy challenge by significantly reducing the energy required for secondary biological treatment. The residual product produced by the LEAPprimary system enables energy recovery as it is rich in organics and can be used in anaerobic digestion, incineration or other solids treatment to enhance the conversion of carbon to energy in wastewater.
The combination of LEAPprimary with LEAPmbr is the latest innovation in MBR technology and makes exceptional effluent quality with energy consumption possible.

Case Studies
Facility in Southern Ontario, Canada
An existing MBR facility in Southern Ontario was built with a conventional 2 mm fine screen as primary treatment. In February 2013 the fine screen was replaced with a LEAPprimary system to demonstrate the impact that the LEAPprimary technology would have upon mixed liquor characteristics and ZeeWeed membrane performance.
The LEAPprimary system proved to have a positive impact on the membrane performance by enhancing the removal
of particulate material from the wastewater prior to the MBR. Trash content (material in the mixed liquor greater than 2 mm in size) was 60 mg/L prior to the installation of the LEAPprimary unit. One month after the fine screen was replaced with LEAPprimary the trash content reduced to near zero, which indicates that the material that could reduce ZeeWeed membrane life had been removed from the process.
Process testing was also performed to quantify the TSS and BOD removal of the LEAPprimary system. TSS and COD removal were measured at 50% and 25% respectively. The impact of this was a reduction in the air demand for biological process aeration in the bioreactor. The solids that were retained by the LEAPprimary system were dewatered to a concentration of 25% to 30% dry matter.
Enahanced ZeeWeed membrane performance, lower energy demand and simplified operation were successfully demonstrated for LEAPprimary at this installation.
