Electromat* Electrodialysis (ED)
For Whey Demineralization
GE focuses on improving our customers’ processes and enhancing their products with our Electromat Electrodialysis (ED) and Bipolar Electrodialysis (BPED) Systems. Our history in ED began in 1950 when Ionics developed the first ED system. We expanded into process applications in 1961 when Ionics with Wyeth & Foremost developed and installed the first whey ED production system. Acquired by GE in 2005, Ionics and now GE have continued to research and develop the technology over six decades to improve its performance.
Description & Use
Rich in milk sugar (lactose) and whey proteins, reduced minerals whey is used in infant formula, ice cream, energy drinks, dry mixes and other food products. Since reduced minerals whey is becoming a more common ingredient in food, there is a growing need for efficient and cost effective demineralization processes. GE’s ED systems can meet this need.
Dairy Solutions Processed by ED

Customer Benefits
Economical
Increases profits by enhancing product value.
No chemical regeneration required, reducing
chemical consumption and disposal.
Minimal dilution of solids, for lower evaporation cost.
True continuous process. Typical hold-up time is <15 minutes.
Continuous production of 25 to 90% demineralized whey without blending.
Cost-efficient manufacturing and ED stack design for lower operational expense.
Organic fouling resistant for reduced down time and lower membrane replacement costs.
Number of cell pairs in the ED stack can be adjusted to optimize efficiency, as well as operational and capital cost.

Processes can be tuned in to meet any product set point, eliminating the time and wasted energy of blending.
Stable process pH. Less denaturing of protein.
Able to process at high % TS and protein con-
tent.
System Quality
Sized and customized for each application to meet customer product specifications and optimize performance.
Can easily adapt to changes in feed supply.
Can be designed to meet 3A sanitary stan-
dards.
Stacks are CE, UL & CSA marked
Manufactured in a ISO 9001:2000 facility
Flexible
Modular system design allows for easy scaleup and expandability.
Spacers & membranes are stable over a wide range of pH with resistance to the aggressive chemicals required to clean food processing equipment.
Ease of Operation/Simplicity:
Automated system provides a reliable opera-
tion that is easy to use and control.
Membranes are physically robust for easy installation and maintenance.
Reliable
Membranes, spacers, and stacks are designed & manufactured by one supplier for ensured reliability and quality.
