Material Handling Attachment Guidance
Background
Aerial Work Platforms are designed to carry personnel to
elevated work locations. As part of this function, materials
and tools are sometimes transported on the platform to be
installed or used during construction and maintenance
activities. Sometimes the materials can simply be carried
on the floor of the platform. There are instances where a
rack or another type of Material Handling Attachment
(MHA) can make the work easier or more efficient. This
document provides guidance for the use of MHAs on
Genie products.
Material handling attachments are allowed to be installed
and used on Genie Aerial Work Platforms under the
following guidelines:
1 Fabrication, attachment and use of an MHA must be
approved and authorized by the equipment owner.
2 The total weight of the MHA, the material, tools, and
personnel must not exceed the rated platform load.
3 The load must be supported principally by the
platform floor structure. Appropriate mounting
methods must be determined as addressed in number
9 below.
4 The center of gravity of the MHA and the material must
be within the perimeter of the platform railing.
5 If the MHA placement and design obscures safety
signs or instructional decals, a duplicate set of decals
must be secured to the MHA so that the information is
still visible while it is in use.
6 The MHA and materials being carried by it shall not
prevent access or egress to the platform nor adversely
affect the operation of entry gates or access to
controls.
7 The MHA must have a means to secure the material
while the equipment is traveling or lifting.
8 It is the responsibility of the equipment owner and/or
the contractor to perform a hazard analysis on the
design and use of the MHA, and ensure that the
equipment complies with the essential health and
safety requirements applicable to the jobsite, as well
as local, state, provincial, and federal rules and
regulations, and standards related to the use of the
equipment.
9 The MHA must be engineered specifically for the
application by a qualified person in concert with the
stability and structural requirements of the equipment
and if required, include third party certification. A
"qualified person" as used above is one who, by
possession of a recognized degree, certificate, or
professional standing, or by extensive knowledge,
training and experience, has demonstrated his/her
ability to solve or resolve problems related to the
subject matter, the work, or the project
Owner/Employer/User/Operator Requirements:
1 Operators must be trained and qualified on safe
operation of the equipment, and be familiar with the
specific model of Genie equipment as follows:
a Be familiar and comply with the equipment
operating and safety manuals.
b Understand all control functions, decals
and warnings.
c Be aware of and understand all safety
devices specific to the equipment being
used.
d Be instructed how to avoid the hazards
identified in the hazard analysis mentioned
above and utilize all means, including those
provided by the user/employer, to avoid such
hazards.
2 Comply with all applicable jobsite, local, state,
provincial, and federal rules and regulations, and
standards related to the use of the equipment.
3 The equipment must be in proper working condition
and configuration.
In consideration for Genie's guidance herein, the
equipment owner, MHA fabricator, user and operator
hereby agree to indemnify and hold harmless Genie
Industries Inc. and its parent and affiliated companies
against any and all liabilities, claims, suits, losses, costs
and legal fees caused by, arising out of, or resulting from
any negligent act or omission in the operation of the
equipment; the failure to comply with the criteria set forth
in this letter related to the MHA; the design, manufacture
and installation of any MHA; the safety rules and
operating instructions in the Operator's Manual; and the
design and placement of any safety decals. By
proceeding with the installation and use of the MHA,
you agree to adhere to the requirements set forth
herein, including said indemnification. If you do not
agree, do not proceed with the proposed installation
and use.
