SELECTION OF MOTORS AND CONTROL
The motors listed in the following pages are those used for "general purpose" applications.
AVAILABLE POWER
Whether alternating or direct current, the volt-
age,
and if alternating current, the number of
phases,
the frequency, and whether a of four-wire system. SURROUNDING CONDITIONS
G-E motors are exceptionally well protected and insulated to withstand atmospheric and other conditions to which the majority of motors are subjected. Under unusual circumstances, how-
ever,
the Company
is
prepared to furnish especial-
ly designed motors.
BEARINGS
G-E General Purpose motors, except totally enclosed and enclosed fan cooled, may be obtained equipped with sleeve or ball bearings as desired, there being a slight additional charge for ball bearings.
Totally enclosed and enclosed fan cooled motors are available with ball bearings only.
VOLTAGE FREQUENCY RANGE
G-E motors will operate successfully under the
following conditions of voltage and frequency variations but not necessarily in accordance with the standards established for operation at normal rating:
Where the variation in voltage does not exceed
10 per cent above or below normal.
Where the frequency variation does not exceed
5 per cent above or below normal.
Where the sum of the voltage and frequency
variation does not exceed 10 per cent (provided
the variation in frequency does not exceed 5 per cent) above or below normal rating, as stamped on motor nameplate.
SERVICE FACTOR
(GENERAL PURPOSE MOTORS)
The nameplates of general purpose motors (except fractional horsepower motors) bear the lowing statement:
"Service factor 1.15 rated volts and cycles."
(This wording has been standardized by the National Electrical Manufacturers' Association for use by all member motor manufacturers.)
The Service Factor is a multiplier, which ap-
plied to the normal horsepower rating, indicates
a permissible loading within the accepted safe limits of temperature rise for the insulation. All guarantees of efficiency, power-factor, etc., are based on the normal horsepower rating, and do not apply for the horsepower rating obtained by using the Service Factor.

NORMAL-TORQUE, HIGH-REACTANCE MOTORS
TYPE KF—3- AND 2-PHASE, 60 CYCLE
Squirrel-Cage Rotor—Full-Voltage Start
40 Degree C.—Continuous Duty
Type KF Normal Torque HiBh-Reactance Motor
The Type KF "General Purpose" motors are in general suitable for application wherever a Type K motor with compensator is used. They are designed to start on full voltage, giving slightly higher torque, but approximately the same starting current as the Type K motor with a compensator.
Therefore, they can be considered for gen-
eral purpose applications.
These normal-torque motors of this listed line should not be confused with the very low torque Type KF motors that have been designed for various applications; nor are they to supersede the
Type KG high-starting torque.

G-E REPULSION INDUCTION MOTORS
TYPE SCR CONSTANT SPEED SINGLE-PHASE
% to 10
Interchangeable for 110 or 220
The ability of the Type SCR motor to meet the
requirements of single-phase service is realized from a consideration of the following outline of
its operating features:
Simple constructio
switches or centrifugal devices.
Exceptionally high accelerating and pull-in
torque.
Positive operation on low voltages. Practically perfect commutation, long brush Quietness and freedom from vibration.
Very good efficiency and exceptionally high power-factor. Low starting current. Excellent speed regulation.
Reversible motors (requiring special field windings) can be supplied. Control is obtained either by a double-pole, double-throw switch, or drum controller.

Type CD, Totally Enclosed, Fan-Cooled, Direct Current Motor
In the development of the Type CD totally enclosed, fan-cooled motor, considerably greater put per pound of material has been secured than is possible by any other known method of total
enclosure. The result is a considerable reduction
in first cost and greater economy in operation. The internal and external air currents are so controlled and directed as to most effectively radiate heat and eliminate hot spots.
Type CD totally enclosed, fan-cooled motors are equipped with ball bearings. In essential mounting dimensions, motor center to end of shaft) these motors are identical with the corresponding open frames with sleeve bearing construction.

Type CD, Adjustable Speed Motor with Protecting Covers
When operated with proper control devices,
these motors are suitable for dynamic braking,
and for drives requiring rapid acceleration and deceleration.
Types BD and CD adjustable speed motors are particularly well adapted to heavy duty service. In mechanical construction, they are identical with Types BD and CD constant speed motors.
These motors can be furnished open or partially enclosed, either continuously or intermittently
rated. Most methods of enclosure do not materially affect the output of the motor due to re-
stricted ventilation.

G-E PORTABLE FARM MOTOR
FOR DRIVING BELTED FARM MACHINERY
The G-E portable farm motor can be applied to a variety of services, particularly for duties of an intermittent nature, where a motor permanently installed on the machines would not be used long enough each day to justify the investment.
Some suggested applications of portable farm motors are mentioned below:
Wood Saws.
Cross and Rip Pumping House Service Water. Pumping Farm Service Water. Ensilage Cutters. Hay Hoists.
Grain and Corn Conveyors. Stock Feed Preparing and Blending Machinery. Bone and Green-food Cutters. Grain Cleaners. Concrete Mixers. Grindstones.
Rock Crushers.
Hullers. Ice Conveyors and Hoists. Dairy Machinery, Group Drive.
Repair Shop Machinery, Group Drive.
Laundry Machinery, Group Drive.
Hay and Straw Balers.
Viners. Cider Mills. Ice Chippers. Ice Cream Freezers. Blowers. Sausage Grinders. Fruit and Vegetable Graders.
The most suitable of the three driving pulleys
is put on the motor, and belt is adjusted. The
power cable is "plugged in" at a convenient
power outlet. It is then necessary only to push the "start" button to obtain instant and full response from the power unit. Stopping is accomplished by pushing the "stop" button.
The complete unit consists of an electric motor
and control device mounted on a two-wheel truck. Two extra pulleys and a puller are included in the
tool box. The internal parts of the motor are
amply protected from mechanical injury. A magnetic-type starter is actuated by a "start
and stop" push button. The push button and starter are enclosed and are not liable to
dental contact or mechanical injury. Overload
protection is afforded by a temperature device
which stops the motor after an overload has been
prolonged to the point where internal heating
would become detrimental to the motor. After an overload shut-down, the temperature device is
automatically reset and the motor restarted by pressing the "start" push button. Forty feet of power cable fitted with plug and
receptacle is furnished. The "start and stop" push
button is normally mounted on the side of the control box. If it is desired to have the push
button at the driven machine, thirty feet of con-
trol cable may be ordered as a separate item.
Different farm machines are operated at different speeds and fitted with pulleys varying greatly in diameters, but the choice of three belt speeds makes it possible to approximate the desired machine speed as shown by the table.
