Refrigerants

All refiigeration products contain refiigerants, which under federal law must be removed prior

to product disposal. If you are getting rid of an old refrigeration product, check with the company

handling the disposal about what to do.

USEOFEXTENSIONCORDS

Because of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend against the use of an extension cord.

Howevm; if you must use an extension cord, it is absolutely necessary that it be a UL-listed (in the United States) or a CSA-listed (in Canada), 3-wire grounding type appliance extension cord having a grounding

type plug and outlet and that the elecnical rating of the cord be 15 amperes (minimum) and 120 volts.

A WARNING!

HOWTOCONNECTELECTRICITY

Do not, under any circumstances, cut or remove the third (ground) prong from the power cord. Forpersonal safe_ this appliance must be properly grounded.

The power cord of this appliance is equipped with a 3-prong (grounding) plug which mates with a

standard 3-prong (grounding) w_l outlet to minimize the possibility of electric shock hazard

from this appliance. Have tile wall outlet and circuit checked by a

qualified electrician to make sure tile outlet is properly grounded.

Where a standard 2-prong wall oudet is encountered, it isyour pel.-sonal responsibility and

obligation m have it replaced witll a properly grounded 3-prong wall outlet.

The refrigerator should always be plugged into its own individual electrical oudet which has a voltage

rating tllat matches the rating plate.

This provides tile best performance and also prevents overloading house wiring circuits which

could cause a fire hazard from overheated wires.

Never unplug your refrigerator by pulling on the power cord. _Mwaysgrip plug firmly and pull

sn'aight out from tile outlet.

Repair or replace immediately all power cords that have hecome frayed or odmrwise damaged. Do not

use a cord that shows cracks or abrasion damage along its lengtll or at eidmr end.

When moving the refiigerator away from tile wall, be careful not to roll over or damage the power cord.

Because of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend against the use of an adapter plug.

Howevm; if you must use an adapter, where local codes permit, a temporary connection may be made

m a properly grounded 2-prong wall outlet by use era UL-listed adapter a'_ailable at most local

hardware stores.

The larger slot in tile adapter must be aligned witll tile larger slot in dm wall outlet to provide proper

polarity in the connection of the power cord. When disconnecting tile power cord from the

adapter, al,a-ayshold tile adapter in place with one hand while pulling tile power cord plug with tile other hand. If this is not done, tile adapter ground

terminal is very likely to break with repeated use.

If the adapter ground terminal breaks, DO NOT USE tlle refrigerator until a proper ground has been

established.

Turning the dial to 0 stops cooling in both compartments--fresh food and freezer. It does not shut off power to

the refrigerator.

ControlSettings

Temperature ControlDial

The temperature control dial has nine settings plus 0. 1 is the warmest. 9 is the coldest.

At first, set the dial at 5.

After using the refi'igeratol, adjust the dial if necessal T.

Insert a coin into the slot in the middle of the dial and you can turn the dial to the setting that is best suited to your needs.

Allow 24 hours for the refi'igerator to get cold.

Aboutthefreshfoodcompartmentshelves.

Shelf supports at various levels allow you to custom-space your shelves. Not all features are on all models.

Half-Width Shelves

One end of the shelf rests on a molded side-wall support; a bracket on the other

end hooks into a track on the rear cabinet w-all.

TOremove, lift the shelf up at front, then

off the support and out of the track.

TOreplace, select desired shelf height.

With shelf front raised slightly, hook the

bracket's top lug into the track, then lower the shelf onto the support.

Full-Width Shelves

Some models have a steel wire sliding shelf, a stationary tempered glass shelf or

two steel wire stationary shelves. These shelves can be moved to another place

in the fl'esh food compartment. The full-width sliding shelf has stop-locks.

When placed correctly on the shelf

supports, the shelf will stop before coming completely out of tbe refrigerator and will

not tilt when you place food on it or remove food from it.

NOTE:Theshelf to therightof the trackis designedtohookinto the@t-hand slot,

theshelf to the left is designedto hook intotheleftqTandslot.

Toremovethefull-width shelves,lift the

rear of the shelf and pull forward.

Toremovea full-width sheff when thefresh

foodcompartmentdoorcannotbe opened fully,lift tile rear of tile shelf, pull

forward and down, tilt the shelf and take it out.

About the freezer compartment shelves.

Some models have an ice-tray shelf and some have a full-width step shelf.

Ice- Tray Shelf

To remove the ice-tray sheff, lift the left

side of the shelf off its supports, then pull the shelf re the left to free it of the

plug supports. Pull the shelf to tile right re fi'ee the pins fi'om the holes in the

cabinet wall.

Step Shelf

Toremove the step shelf:

Drawer and Cover Removal

Drawers can be removed easily by grasping tile sides and lifting up slightly while

pulling drawers past tile stop location.

Full-Width Drawer with Plastic Cover

Toremovethecover, lift it of?["its supports,

pull it forward, tilt it and take it out.

Twin Drawers with Glass Cover

Toremove:

[]Remove the drawers. []Reach in, push the front of glass

cover up, and at the same time, pull it forward as far as it will come.

Tilt it and take it out. Avoid cleaning the

cold glass cover with hot w-ater because the extreme temperature difference may

cause it to break.

[]Remove the drawer frame. (Always

remove the glass cover before you take out the drawer frame.)

Lift the frame off the supports at each side and back, pull it forw-ard, tilt it and

take it out.

Toreplace:

[]Lower the frame until it rests on the

supports at each side and back.

[]Replace the glass corm; pushing its

rear edge firmly into the rear frame channel and gently lowering tile front into place.

[]Replace the drawers.

About the automatic icemaker.

A newly-installed refrigerator may take 12to 24hours to begin making ice.

Automatic Icemaker (onsome models)

The icemaker will produce approximately

100-130 cubes in a 24-hour period,

depending on the freezer compartment temperature, room temperature, number

of door openings and other use conditions.

There are two types of icemakers: power switch models and feeler arm models.

Powerswitch model

Feelerarmmodel

ff the refrigerator is operated before the water connection is made to the icemakm;

set the power switch m 0 (Off) or move the feeler arm to the STOP (up) position.

When the refrigerator has been connected to the water supply, set the power switch to the I(mOposition or move the feeler arm to the 0/V (down) position. On power switch

models, the green light will come on.

You will hear a buzzing sound each time

the icemaker fills with watel:

The icemaker will fill with water when it cools to I5°E A newly-installed refrigerator

may take 12 to 24 hours to begin making ice cubes.

Be sure nothing interferes with the sweep of the fizeler arm.

When the bin fills to the level of the feeler arm, the icemaker will stop producing ice.

It is normal for several cubes to be joined together.

If ice is not used frequently, old ice cubes will become cloudy, taste stole and shrink.

On power switch models, the green power light will blink if ice cubes get stuck in the

icemaker. To correct this, set the power switch to 0 (Off)and remove the cubes. Set

the power switch to I (on) to restart the icemaker. After the icemaker has been

turned on again, there will be a delay of. about 45 minutes beJ[bre the icemaker

resumes operation.

NOTE:Inhomeswith lower-than-averagewater pressure,youmayheartheicemakercyclemultiple

timeswhenmakingonebatchofice.

Icemaker Accessory Kit

If your refrigerator did not already come equipped with an automatic icemakm;

an icemaker accessory kit is available at

extra cost.

Check the back of the refrigerator for the specific icemaker kit needed for your

model.

Care and cleaning of the refrigerator.

Cleaning the Outside

The door handles and trim (on some

models). Clean witb a cloth dampened

with soapy w_aten Dry with a soft cloth.

Keep the outside clean. Wipe with a clean cloth lightly dampened with kitchen

appliance w_ax or mild liquid dish detergent. Dry and polish with a clean,

soft cloth.

Cleaning the Inside

TOhelp prevent odors, leave an open box

of baking soda in the fresh food and fl'eezer compartments.

Unplugthe refrigeratorbeforecleaning.

If"tiffs is not practical, wring excess moisture out of sponge or cloth when

cleaning around swiwhes, lights or controls.

Use w_arm ,actter and baking soda solution- about a tablespoon (15 ml) of baking soda

to a quart (1 liter) ofw_aten This both cleans and neutralizes odors. Rinse and

wipe d W.

Donot wipetherefrigeratorwith asoileddish clothorwet towel. Thesemayleavearesidue thatcanerodethepaint.Donotusescouring

pads,powderedcleaners,bleachorcleaners

Donot washanyplasticrefrigeratorparts in thedishwashe_

Cleaningthe condenser coils,

After cleaning the door gaskets, apply a

thin layer of petroleum ,jelly to the door gaskets at the hinge side. This helps keep

the gaskets from sticking and bending out of shape.

Condenser

There is no need for routine condenser cleaning in normal home operating

environments. Howevm; in environments that may be particularly dusty or greasy,

the condenser should be cleaned periodically fbr efticient refrigerator

operation.

To clean the condensm, turn tbe temperature control dial to O.Sweep

a_a_ayor vacuum up dust. For best results, use a brush specially

designed for tl_is purpose. It is available at most appliance parts stores.

Behind the Refrigerator

Be careflll when moving the refrigerator av_-ayfrom the wall. All types of floor

coverings can be damaged, particularly cushioned coverings and those with

embossed surfhces. Turn tile leveling legs at each front corner

of tile refrigerator counterclockwdse until the rollers support tile refrigeraton Pull tile

refrigerator straight out and return it to position by pushing it straight in. Moving

the refrigerator in a side direction may result in damage to the floor covering or

refrigerator.

Light Bulb Replacement

To replace a burned-out bulb, unplug the refrigerator from its electrical outlet,

unscrew the bulb when cool and replace it witb an appliance bulb of the same or

lower wattage.

Whenpushingtherefrigeratorback,makesure youdon'troll overthepower cordoricemaker

supplyline (onsomemodels).

After rolling the refrigerator back into place, turn the legs clockwise until tile

legs again bear the weight of the refrigeraton

Preparing for Vacation

For long vacations or absences, remove food and unplug tim rel¥igeraton Move

the temperature control dial to the 0 position, and clean the interior with a

baking soda solution of one tablespoon

(15 ml) of baking soda to one quart (1 liter) of water. Leave the doors open.

Preparing to Move

Secure all loose items such as grille, shelves and drawers by taping them

securely in place to prevent damage.

Set the icemaker power s,Mtch to the

0 (Off) position or move the fL_eler arm to

the STOP(up) position (depending on

model) and shut off the water supply to the refrigerator:

If tbe temperature can drop below freezing, have a qualified servicer drain

the water supply system (on some models) to prevent serious property

damage due to flooding.

ROLLERS AND LEVELING LEGS

Leveling legs near each fi'ont corner of the refi'igerator are adjustable. They firmly position the refi'igerator and prevent it fi'om mox;mg when the doors are

opened. Leveling legs should be set so the fi'ont of the refi'igerator is raised just enough that the doors close

easily when opened about halfway. Turn the leveling legs clockwise to raise the

refrigerator, counterclockwise to lower iL

Rollersnext to the leveling legs allow you to move the refi'igerator away fi'om tbe wall for cleaning.

WATER SUPPLY TO THE ICEMAKER

(on some models)

If the refrigerator has an icemakm; it will have to be connected to a cold water line. A water supply kit

(containing copper tubing, shutoff valve, fittings and

instructions) is available at extra cost fi'om your dealm; by visiting our Website at www.GEAppllanees.com (in

Canada at www.geapplianees.ca) or from Parts and

Accessories, 800.626.2002 (in Canada 1.888.261.3055).

REFRIGERATOR LOCATION

• Do not install tim refi-igerator where tim temperature

will go below 60°F (16°C) because it will not run often enough to maintain proper temperatures.

• Install it on a floor strong enough to support it fully loaded.

Turn the legs counterclockwise until the weight of the refrigerator is transferred fi'om them to the rollers.

After rolling the refrigerator back into place, turn the

legs clockwise until the legs again bear tbe weight of the refrigerator.

El INSTALLING THE WATER LINE (ON SOME MODELS)

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Recommended copper water supply kits are WX8X2,

WX8X3 or WX8X4, depending on the amount of

tubing you need. Approved plastic water supply lines

are GE SmartConnec( "_Refrigerator Tubing

(WX08X10002, WX08X10006, WX08X10015 and

WX08X10025).

When connecting your refrigerator to a GE Reverse Osmosis Water System, the only approved installation

is with a GE RVKit. For other reverse osmosis water

systems, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

This water line installation is not warranted by the

refrigerator or icemaker manufacturen Follow these instructions carefully to minimize the risk of expensive

water damage. Water hammer (water banging in the pipes) in house

plumbing can cause damage m refrigerator parts and lead to water leakage or flooding. Call a qualified

plumber to correct,a-ater hammer before installing the water supply line to the refi'igeraton

To prevent burns and product damage, do not hook

up the water line to the hot water line. If you use your refiigerator before connecting the

water line, make sure tile icemaker power switch is

in the 0 (Off)position (on power switeh models) or the feeler arm is in the STOP (up) position (on feeler

arm models).

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• Copper or GE SmartConnect TM Refrigerator Tubing

kit, 1/4" outer diameter to connect the refi'igerator

to tile water supply. If using coppm, be sure both ends of the tubing are cut square.

To determine how much tubing you need: measure

the distance fi'om the water valve on the back of the refi'igerator to the ,a-ater supply pipe. Then add 8"

(2.4 m). Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing (about 8" [2.4 m] coiled into 3 turns of about 10"

[25 cm] diameter) to allow the refi'igerator to move

out fi'om the wall after installation.

GE SmartConnecC' Refi'igerator Tubing Kits are available in tile following lengths:

2' (0.6 m) - WXO8XIO002

6' (1.8 m) - WXO8XIO006

15" (4.6 m) - WXO8XIOOf5 25" (7.6 m) - WXO8XlO025

Be sure that the kit you select allows at least 8' (2.4 m)

as described above.

Do not install the icemaker tubing in areas where temperatures fall below freezing.

When using any electrical device (such as a power drill) during installation, be sure tile device is double

insulated or grounded in a manner to prevent the hazard of electric shock, or is battery powered.

All installations must be in accordance Mth local

plumbing code requirements.

NOTE: The only GE approved plastic tubing is that supplied in GE SmartConnect TM Refrigerator Tubing

kits. Do not use any other plastic water supply line because the line is under pressure at all times. Certain

types of plastic will crack or rupture with age and cause water damage to your home.

B INSTALLING THE WATER LINE (CONT.)

WHAT YOU WILL NEED (CONT.)

• AGE water supply kit (conVaining tubing, shutoff

valve and fittings listed below) is available at extra

cost from your dealer or fi'om Parts and Accessories,

800.626.2002.

• A cold water supply. The water pressure must be between 20 and 120 p.s.i. (1.4-8.1 bar).

• Power drill.

• 1/2" or adjustable wrench.

• Straight and Phillips blade screwdriver.

• Two 1/4 " outer diameter compression nuts and 2 ferrules (sleeves)--m connect the copper tubing

to the shutoffvMve and the refi'igerator ,_-ater valve.

• If you are using a GE SmartConnect '_ Refi'igerator

Tubing kit, the necessa W fittings are preassembled

to the tubing.

Install the shutoffvalve on the nearest fi'equently used

drinking water line.

[] SHUT OFF THE MAIN WATER

SUPPLY

Turn on the nearest faucet long enough to clear the line of,_-ater.

[] CHOOSE THE VALVE LOCATION

Choose a location for the valve that is easily accessible. It is best to connect into the side of

a vertical water pipe. When it is necessm T to connect into a horizontal water pipe, make the

connection to the top or side, rather than at the bottom, to avoid drawing off"any sediment from

the water pipe.

[] DRILL THE HOLE FOR THE VALVE

• If your existing copper ,_-ater line has a flared fitting at the end, you will need an adapter (available at

plumbing supply stores) to connect the water line to the refi'igerator OR you can cut off the flared fitting

with a tube cutter and then use a compression

fitting. Do not cut formed end from GE SmartConnec( _ Refi'igerator tubing.

• Shutoff valve to connect to the cold water line.

The shutoffvalve should have a water inlet with a

minimum inside diameter of 5/32" at the point of connection to the COLD WATER LINE. Saddle-type shutoff valves are included in many ,_-ater supply kits.

Before purchasing, make sure a saddle-type valve complies with your local plumbing codes.

Drill a 1/4" hole in tile water pipe (even if using a self:piercing valve) using a sharp bit. Remove any

burrs resulting from drilling the hole in the pipe.

Take care not to allow water to drain into the drill. Failure to drill a 1/4" hole may resuh in reduced

ice production or smaller cubes.

Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve) for copper tubing onto the end of the tubing and

connect it to the shutoff valve. Make sure the tubing is fully inserted into tbe

valve. Tighten the compression nut securely. For plastic tubing from a GE SmartConnect _'_

Refrigeratur Tubing kit, insert the molded end of the tubing into the shutuff valve and tighten

compression nut until it is hand tight, then tighten one additional turn with a wrench. Overdghtening

may cause leaks.

[] ROUTE THE TUBING

Route the tubing between the cold water line and the refrigerator.

Route tile tubing through a hole drilled in tile wall or floor (behind the refrigerator or adjacent base

cabinet) as close to the wall as possible. NOTE: Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing

(about 8 feet [244 cm] coiled into 3 turns of about 10" [25 cm] diameter) to allow the refl'igerator to

move out from the wall after installation.

[] FLUSH OUT THE TUBING

• We recommend installing a water filter if your water supply has sand or particles that could clog

the screen of the refrigerator's water valve, lnstall it in the ,a-ater line near the refrigeratol: If using GE SmartConnecff "_Refrigerator Tubing kit,

you will need an additional tube (WX08X10002) to connect the filter. Do not cut plastic tube to

install filten

Remove the access cover.

Fasten the tubing into the clamp provided to hold it in a vertical position. You may need to

pry open tile clamp.

Reatmch the access cox,m:

Remove the plastic flexible cap from the water

valve (refrigerator connection).

Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve)

onto the end of the tubing as shown. On GE SmartConnec¢" Refrigerator Tubing kit,

tile nuts are already assembled to the tubing.

Insert tile end of the tubing into the water valve connection as far as possible. While holding the

tubing, tighten the fitting. For plastic tubing from a GE SmartConnect TM

Refrigerator Tubing kit, insert the molded end of the tubing into the shutoff valve and tighten

compression nut until it is hand tight, then tighten one additional turn with a wrench.

Overtightening may cause leaks.

[] TURN THE WATER ON AT THE

SHUTOFF VALVE

Tighten any connections that leak.

[] PLUG IN THE REFRIGERATOR

Arrange the coil of tubing so that it does not vibrate against the back of the refrigerator or against the

wall. Push the refrigerator back to the wall.

[] START THE ICEMAKER

On power switch models, set the icemaker power switch to the I (On)position. On feeler arm models,

move the feeler arm to the ON (down) position. The icemaker will not begin m operate until it reaches

its operating temperature of 15°F (-9°C) or below. It will then begin operation automatically.

These instructions are for changing tile hinges fl'om tile right side to the left side--if you ever want to change the hinges back to the right side, follow these same instructions and reverse all references to left and right.

l.l Unplug tbe refrigerator from its electrical

outlet.

1.2 Empty all door shelves, including the dai W compartment.

2.2Witb a 5/16" hex-head socket drivel, remove tbe screws that hold the top hinge to tbe cabinet.

9.3 Lift the hinge (and the shim glued m it) straight up to free the hinge pin from the socket in

the top of the door and set it aside, along with its screws.

2.4 Remove the tape and tilt the door away from the cabinet. Lift it offthe center hinge pin.

CAUTION: Do not let either door drop to tbe floor. To do so could damage the door stop.

[] REMOVE THE FREEZER DOOR

2.1 Tape the door shut with masking tape.

2.5 Set the door on a non-scratching surface with the outside up.

9.6 Transfer the 2 screws from the opposite side of tbe cabinet to the screw holes vacated by the top hinge removal.

3.1 Tape the door shut with masking tape.

3.2 Using a 5/16" hex-head socket screwdriver and a 5/16" open-end wrench, remove the two screws holding the center hinge (and the shim

glued to it) to the cabinet. Lift the center hinge to fi'ee its pin from the socket in the top of the

door, and set hinge and screws aside. Be careful

not to lose the center hinge spacer and washer.

3.4 Set the door outside-up on a non-scratching surface.

3.5 Transfizr the two ,screws from the opposite side of

the cabinet to tile screw holes ,racated by the center hinge remo'ral.

3.3 Remove the tape and tilt the door away from the cabinet. Lift tile door from tile pin in tile bottom

hinge bracket. (ffthe plastic washer sticks to tile door bottom, put it back on the hinge.)

3.6 Transfer the vcasher (if your model has one) to the

opposite side.

3.7 Take one of the screws removed in step 2 and start

it in tile outermost screw hole on the opposite side. Do not drive it all the way do,aqa-leave enough

space under the screw head for thickness of"shim and bracket.

5.1 Transfer fresh food door handle

5.1.1 Remove tile handle plug using a tape-tipped putty knife under the edge,

and remove the screw underneath. Remove tile two screws holding the

handle to the top of the dool:

5.1.3 Remove the screws from the right edge of the

door top and insert them into the handle screw holes on the opposite side.

4.3 Interchange hinge (and the shim glued to it) and screws at top right with screws at top left of cabinet.

Do not tighten screws on hinge side at this time.

NOTES:

• Some hinges have four holes. Which holes you

use for installing the hinge depends on which side you install the hinge.

• The outer edge of the hinge should be parallel

to the edge of the case for correct installation.

5.1.4 With tape-tipped putty knite or thin-blade

screwdrivm; pry out the plug button from the hinge hole on the left side of the door and

insert it into the hole on the opposite side that was vacated by removal of the top hinge.

6.2 Rehang the freezer door

6.2.1 Lower the fi'eezer door onto the center

hinge pin. Be sure the washer and spacer are in place on the pin.

6.2.2 Tilt the door toward the cabinet, lifting the top

hinge so the pin fits into the socket on the top of the door.

6.1.3 Tilt the door toward the cabinet. As the door is brought into position, slide the hinge under the

head of the screw which earlier had been partly driven into the outermost hole. Insert the

remaining screw, then tighten both screws securely.

6.2.3. Make sure the door is slightly above the top of

the cabinet and the gap between the doors is even across the fi'ont. Tighten the top hinge

screws. Do not overtighten these screws-tighten them until they are just snug, then turn them

another one-half turn.

Normal operating sounds.

Newer refrigerators sound different from older refrigerators. Modem refrigerators have more features and use newer technology.

HUMMM... WHOOSH...

• The new high efficiency compressor may run faster and longer than your old refrigerator and you may

hear a high-pitched hum or pulsating sound while it is operating.

• You may hear a whooshing sound when the dom.'s close. This is due to pressure equalizing within the refrigerator.

CLICKS, POPS,

CRACKS and CHIRPS

• You may hear cracking or popping sounds when the

refrigerator is first plugged in. This happens as the refrigerator cools to the correct temperature.

• The compressor may cause a clicking or chirping sound when attempting to restart (this could take

up to 5 minutes).

• Expansion and contraction of cooling coils during and after defrost can cause a cracking or popping

sound.

• On models with an icemakm; after an icemaking cycle, you may hear the ice cubes dropping into

the ice bucket.

• You may hear the fans spinning at high speeds.

This happens when the refrigerator is first plugged in, when the doors are opened frequently or when

a large amount of food is added to the refrigerator or freezer comparmlents. The fans are helping to

maintain the correct temperatures.

WATERSOUNDS

The flow of refrigerant through the freezer cooling coils may make a gurgling noise like boiling water.

Water dropping on the defrost heater can cause a sizzling, popping or buzzing sound during the

defrost cycle. A w-ater dripping noise may occur during the defrost

cycle as ice melts from the evaporator and flows into the drain pan.

Closing the door may cause a gurgling sound due to pressure equalization.
