About the GE® GSWF water lter cartridge
Water Filter Cartridge
The water lter cartridge is located in the back upper right corner of
the refrigerator compartment.
When to Replace the Filter on Models
With a Replacement Indicator Light
LCD Models: A pop-up message will appear on the LCD screen to
remind you to replace the water lter. You can check the status of the
water lter manually.
Access By: Home > Options > Dispenser Options > Reset Water Filter
Non-LCD Models: There is a replacement indicator light for the water
lter cartridge on the dispenser. This light will turn orange to tell you
that you need to replace the lter soon.
The lter cartridge should be replaced every six months, when the
replacement indicator light turns red, or if the ow of water to the
dispenser or icemaker decreases.
When to Replace the Filter on Models
Without a Replacement Indicator Light
The lter cartridge should be replaced every six months or earlier if
the ow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases.
Removing the Filter Cartridge
If you are replacing the cartridge, rst remove the old one by slowly
turning it to the left. Do not pull down on the cartridge. A small
amount of water may drip down.
CAUTION: If air has been trapped in the system, the lter cartridge
may be ejected as it is removed. Use caution when removing.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk associated with property damage
due to water leakage:
• Read and follow Use Instructions before installation and use of
this system.
• Installation and use MUST comply with all state and local
plumbing codes.
• Protect from freezing, remove lter cartridge when temperatures
are expected to drop below 33° F (1° C).
• Do not install systems in areas where ambient temperatures may
go above 110° F or below 40° F.
• Do not install on hot water supply lines. The maximum operating
water temperature of this lter system is 100°F (37.8°C).
• Do not install if water pressure exceeds 120 psi. If your water
pressure exceeds 80 psi (552 kPa), you must install a pressure
limiting valve. Contact a plumbing professional if you are uncertain
how to check your water pressure.
• Do not install where water hammer conditions may occur. If water
hammer conditions exist you must install a water hammer arrester.
Contact a plumbing professional if you are uncertain how to check
for this condition.
• Where a backow prevention device is installed on a water system,
a device for controlling pressure due to thermal expansion must be
installed.
• The disposable lter cartridge MUST be replaced every 6 months, at the
rated capacity or sooner if a noticeable reduction in ow rate occurs.
Installing the Filter Cartridge
On models without a replacement indicator light, apply the
1
month and year sticker to the new cartridge and mark your
calendar to remind you to replace the lter in six months.
Remove the protective foil from the end of the cartridge.
2
Position the cartridge inside the cartridge holder and slowly
3
rotate the cartridge to the right (clockwise) until it stops. The
cartridge will rotate about a 1/4 turn. When installed correctly,
the grip blade on the end of the cartridge should be positioned
vertically for top-freezer models and horizontally for bottomfreezer models. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
Close the cartridge cover.
4
On models with a replacement indicator light, press and hold the
5
RESET WATER FILTER PAD on the dispenser for three seconds.
WARNING
To reduce the risk associated with choking:
• Do not allow children under 3 years of age to have access to small parts during the installation of this product.
To reduce the risk associated with the ingestion of contaminants:
• Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Systems certied for cyst reduction may be used
on disinfected water that may contain lterable cysts. EPA Establishment #10350-MN-005.
For the maximum benet of your ltration system, GE recommends the use of GE-branded SmartWater lters only. Using GE-branded lters in GE and Hotpoint
optimal performance and reliability. GE-branded SmartWater lters are always the right choice because they are patented and designed specically for GE products.
GE SmartWater lters meet rigorous industry NSF standards for safety and quality that are important for products that are ltering your water. GE has not qualied non-GE-branded lters
for use in GE and Hotpoint refrigerators and there is no assurance that non-GE-branded lters meet GE's standards for quality, performance and reliability.
Models with a Dispenser
Run water from the dispenser for 1-1/2 gallons (approximately three
minutes) to clear the system and prevent sputtering.
NOTE: A newly installed water lter cartridge may cause water
to spurt from the dispenser.
Filter Bypass Plug
To reduce the risk of property damage due to water leakage, you
MUST use the lter bypass plug when a replacement lter cartridge
is not available. The dispenser and icemaker will not operate without
the lter or lter bypass plug.
For more information about your water lter including additional
instructions, please see your refrigerator’s Owner’s Manual.
